You rock. That's all. Carry on.
Great video. Love ❤️ all your content. Stay safe. Greetings from Lubbock, Tx. 🤠🎸🤘
That's it! Anita Baker, your voice reminds of Anita Baker. A little Toni Braxton or Brandy. Nicely done. ❤🎸😊
Very nicely done! Love that silver sky, it's my fav color. Nice choice!
@@ericcrawford9827 what???
old jazz trick i learned - If you make a mistake, just make it three times and it stops being a mistake ;-)
That's exactly what my teacher tells me, lol😂😂😂
Repetition Legitimizes.
@@timkaefermusic Repetition Legitimizes.
@@christopherforrest5713 repetition legitimizes (I'm trying it in a different voicing this time)
@@wadsmitter511 you seem to have a deep understanding of jazz, please tell us more ;)
Bloody hell this is so good
Oh, fancy seeing you here 👀
Heyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyouuuuuuuuuyuyyyyy
HE'S HERE SOMEONE SEEE HIMMMMMM WOAHHHH
How to Productively listen to music Ali?
Aliiiii 😂🙋🏻♀️ all the coolest here
I got goosebumps when you started signing, your voice is perfect for that song…beautiful ❤
This is an incredible idea for teaching guitar. Teach songs alongside theory and adapt the song using new knowledge
Can everybody spam the like button on this idea, please?
Actually, this is one of the most commonly used (and most efficient) ways to studying pieces of music. You focus on a passage, deconstruct it to its most basic form, and gradually add elements as you get more comfortable with the simple forms, until you are finally able to play the original passage :)
The fact that people seem to think this is a revolutionary idea in terms of music education just shows the dire situation of the guitar tutoring you've been exposed/exposed yourself to...
explaining everything while playing, very Rob Scallon, no complaints!
Rokas Gr, I think I found Mary through Fingerpicking 1.01 on Robs channel and was impressed by said skill!
Very Rob, also very Paul Davids. Awesome stuff :D
@@BeatleJWOL indeed
yeah, that was exceptional. Others, like me, have to make sure to not fall off the stool..
Man that singing.... 🔥
That’s what I’m saying. I mean obviously the guitar playing is on point, but that voice! Sheesh!
Yes. Her voice is freaking amazing!!!
She has a beautiful lazy hazy voice.
The kind we wanna hear in the morning when we wake up《Sigh》 ...
@@MrRFasters - I hear you brother!
I get a bit of a Bob Ross feel in this. "So you hit a wrong note, it's fine just carry on..."
That's like improvisation practice 101. Sometimes mistakes can even give you inspiration to try something that turns out to be pretty cool.
@@MrShagification I was messing around with a steve vai backing track for the love of god tried to play it like he did then decided to use a Japanese scale on it and boy the results was crazy.
I commented about it on steves facebook page and he responded record it and share it.
@@thatnorwegianguy1986 Did you ever record it?
If only she would have said, "Now lets just make a little m and just like that we just painted in a little bird living right there in our painting"
@@BundySloth No did not have recording equipment but I am considering replaying it and recording it now.
Just play the song as usual and then do the same I still remember what I did.
Speaking while explaining and improvising.... Well, *that* is really the fourth level
Nice work)
Fitting way to give a tribute, sharing the skills to continue his music.
How is your speaking voice so relaxing? You could be a hypnotist.
Now this makes sense
Level 4: John Mayer Trio Crossroads
That’s facts
Thank u for commenting this, I feel like that version is better
I was thinking same thing
I was gonna comment the same thing hahah !!
Eric Clapton doing Cocaine on his live album. Switching between fingers and pick mid solo.
I remember quite a few on that album where he does that.
Wow, spectacular effort on producing this video with the progressive difficulty, tablature overlay, really high-quality camera / view of the guitar, welcoming discussion while playing, good sound engineering. I appreciate a lot about this, thanks for the upload.
yeah, really. I wouldnt be able to talk and keep time. Or content. Great
Your singing voice is like velvet, and your singing-guitarplaying style is #goals. Keep up the good work!
Best long-version of "Ain't No Sunshine" I have ever heard. This is a great way to teach a song.
This is the coolest guitar lesson I’ve ever seen, that’s so amazing
"Bob Ross" but its Mary Spender playing the guitar
You're painting quite a decent picture there
Always love Bob Ross but I have to say Mary’s a hell of a lot nicer to look at.
This comment is spot on!
Just what I needed. I’m a competent flat picker, but my fingerpicking is sad. Thanks! Any video with your vocals gets an A+ from me.
Yay!
fingerpickin, you just kinda fall into it really. figure out some sort of rolling and repeating thing. its a whole other can of worms, fingerpicking can get crazy fast
Ever since I've discovered finger picking, I hardly ever use a pick now lol
Just put hours into practicing it. I can say that I am now an intemediate guitar pick player and I hardly play fingerstyle songs
It's pretty easy for a fingerstyle player to use a pick, the reverse is not at all true...it should be about what you're playing rather than what's comfortable. Have reasons for doing things! Lol you're welcome for that fortune cookie wisdom
There must be millions of players out there for whom this is the perfect level of accessibility and progression in a guitar tutorial.
Your voice is AMAZING, so dark and warm, LOVE IT!
That voice. Pure sunshine.
Up. The. Strings.
UP👏THE👏STRINGS👏
She literally sung that as I read this XD
This is one of my all time favorites. I hadn't heard that Bill Withers had passed😢 such a shame, music has lost lots of legends in recent weeks. Thank you Mary!!
I'm still in the pre-song part of getting fingers to do things on the guitar but this is definitely one I will be working with on that.😎
Please record this song so we can all listen to it anytime. Such a great cover.
Whataaaa bluesy attitude 💙💙
"... You wanna be kind of busier.... but not too busy ...."
And the wind cries “Mary”
Clever!!!
When this girl sang, my god my heart fell off my ribcage didn't expect her to narrate THEN SING
Right?!! 🤩
My little frog sings like a mermaid, very nice ! Absolut lovley ! ! !
That is a great lesson. You can play this for hours and never get enough!
Now that's what i call a guitar lesson! 👌🏻
I didn't know you before watching this vid. When you started to sing I had goosebumps. 🎶 Pure controlled voice.
Bill was born in West Virginia. He is a mountaineer. And a good singer. I must thank you for this cover and the respect.. GOD bless and keep you. I enjoyed your guitar work - bravo girl.....
listen to the video with your eyes closed !!!! wow! the transitions.... amazing!!!
I can't get enough! I'm too much of a newb to do any of these variations, but they're so nice to listen to. Mary Spender, please upload more videos like this!
I have used this song as one of my go-to noodling songs for years now, doing precisely what you're doing... just playing over the chords in as many interesting ways possible. The song was practically written for that type of practice/exercise.
Great video, as usual.
Well done indeed! Love the tone without the pick. What a soulful voice.
What a fantastic voice, beside great playing. Love the feeling
Reminds me of many years ago when my son was only a few years old constantly tugging at my leg asking questions and talking to me and me answering him while jamming with friends. They all used to ask me how I did it. Listening to him, and talking to him and in general paying attention to him all while playing and singing in between. Guess you just get REALLY good at multitasking as a musician/parent. Great video Mary. Great song and a sad loss of the performer of a such an iconic song.
So, in this scenario, we are the kids and Mary is our Mom?
@@lofr8982 Well, no, because that would just be weird to say I'm attracted to my mom. Haha. What I meant was watching her talk and explain the process while still playing. You can sometimes see the blank glossed over look in her eyes while she is multitasking and she is speaking slower than usual thinking what she wants to say next while still playing. Her mind appears to be near overload, but, she's doing and awesome job at it and I can relate. Mary is doing a great job! I know a few musicians who can teach, play, or sing, but, in no way can do any two of them at the same time. Just one at a time. My post was meant to be a complement to Mary.
This is so wonderful. You are an inspiration. I am learning guitar since 3 months. I hope I can improvise like you.
whenever i hear "less is more" Malmsteen always pops into my mind
A very enjoyable lesson, thank you!
Thanks for this. I've been listening to Bill withers lately ever since I heard he died.. so sad.
I love how you can keep perfect rhythm even while talking. You are amazing and beautiful.
Best guitar lesson ever!
You just changed my style of playing!!!
I love the way your comfortably exploring the music
Always a pleasure to watch this talented lady.
I followed this tutorial through and I love that I have a new light on how to approach creativity playing. Thank you! You are amazing!
I watch this at least once a week and I learn something new every time. Cheers.
This is now my ALL TIME FAVOURITE ON HERE
Mary you have a real genius for teaching. In one short lesson you can inspire a sub level 1 player to believe and to strive harder to be a level 3 player. Its a very rare gift which I appreciate EVEN more than your terrific guitar playing! Thank you!!! Peter Ho
This is some really tasteful playing! Just putting it where it needs to be. Great stuff!
I love hearing you play, so much soul and true emotion in your playing. Thank you 🙏
Wow, props to you Mary. Thank you for honoring Bill Withers, and for taking us on a cool ride in the improv lane with you.
Hello Mary, This is by far one of the BEST lessons I’ve seen yet! You have a real talent for simplifying your lessons for people (like me) who often struggle to learn something new on the guitar. Keep up the good work!
7:22 When your teacher reminds the class every single day about a project that's not due for a month
This girl rocks. Literally.
Beautiful music. Beautiful Lesson. Beautiful Teacher.
This is the first of your videos that I have seen. Greatly appreciate your fingerpicking tutorial and was blown away by your beautiful voice. Can't wait to hear more of your work.
Can’t get this tune out of my head now, I love it! Amazing voice too. 👍
Dear Mary, thank you to feed us with your tutorial !!! How we can live without you ? Ciao
Love the way you broke it down...using a building block approach...Thank You
Thanks, Mary. Always a pleasure to hear you play, and it's a measure of your comfort with the song and the instrument, that you can explain what you're doing, while you're doing it, without losing a beat. Well done!!
This is great, so soothing, calming and wonderful to listen to and watch.
this gave me goosebumps! WOW!
the scowl on my face just keeps evolving as the level of difficulty increases, you know that scowl you make when someone does something sooo cool and youre just like DAAAAAMN thats smooth hahahah
Absolutely brilliant! A great tribute while also showing different skill levels and interpretations
WOW! just WOW. Your guitar playing is great, as always, but the vocals on this one went right to my soul on this beautiful Easter morning. Just WOW! Thanks for sharing.
Thank you, angel. Even though I've been playing guitar for thirty years, I learned a lot from this video. You have a soulful voice and your phrasing is brilliant. Stay healthy and in good spirits!
Voice - magic. Thank you!
Inspiring as always. Getting my strat out now. Keep up the great work.
I wish you'd just do a straight cover of that song, it sounds amazing coming from you
Here she is on Andertons TV w/Danish Pete. Good version of "Ain't" ruclips.net/video/2q9bhyXYQ9w/видео.html
As a non musical instrument player i found your lesson very informative and entertaining.Cheers.
Beautiful!! Absolutely sounds amazing.
You are an absolute joy to listen to Mary, awesome tonality, and such skill with the guitar. I'm honestly jealous, and very impressed. Keep it up!
Great video, love it. I love the approach, love your teaching, I love the aesthetics, and I love the guitar! Is it John Mayer's?
Yeah that’s definitely a Silver Sky, I wouldn’t be surprised though because I kinda remember her saying somewhere that she loves his playing and such
First I thought it is a Fender Strat in ocean mist color, but the neck seems to be a Paul Reed Smith, crazy that it fits...
Its no doubt a PRS Silver Sky.
@@TheThreshershark yeah coz it's a Silver Sky
I think its her own guitar, but cant be sure
Idk why but the build up to 7:41 during that particular version I got full body goosebumps
Mary you’re a musical genius with a voice that just defies description, but I’m sure you know that already.Thankyou for sharing your incredible talent thru RUclips . You are intimidating but also inspirational, a modern Mozart.
Good stuff! FWIW, the original chord changes have a G7 instead of a single note G in the walk up on the low E string. It's one of the many things that makes this such a great tune.
3:44 Groovy baby! OH YEAH!!! lol
Really cool! You have inspired me to learn and record this song. 😻🤩 👍👏👏👏
I love you, Mary Spender. It’s a pleasure to listen to your playing.
hey Mary, thanks for the tutorial. It is always a pleasure to watch and listen to your vids. Nice tune, cool approach, and also fits my mood this time... best regards from sunny Berlin, stay safe and healthy
Man, I love this groove, thank you! I like how your speaking falls in time with the rhythm, it made the video extremely entertaining for me :)
Lovely... just lovely... Thanks for sharing
Just beautiful
You've got some Dido inflections in your voice which sounds delicious to my ears!
It's very refreshing to see somebody using the electric guitar for something other than rock. this was amazing, Mary! Can't believe I'm just seeing it now.
Amazing vocals and pure awesomeness with the guitar.
Thank you, Mary! The "aggressive" licks were killer!
5:50 Yes.Yes!Thank god you did that.I was waiting the entire time for something like this.Keep going. You rock
Ok so I can say I can fingerpick, hide the "beginner" part and boom! Thank you for this!!
Brilliant Art.
So inspirational! Thank you!
This reminded me of a more sincere "Slap 101" by Rob Scallon.
Same! I love that video
When she moved onto level 3 and started playing the bass line with her thumb, my tiny hands would not allow me to do that😂
It's very uncomfortable and it takes a lot of experimentation with the general hand placement. I hope you've continued to work on it!
It definitely took me lots of practice to play like that and eventually I realized that I can do it easily on beginner guitars with necks that aren't as wide but my hands are too small to play with my thumb like she does on regular size necks. It might be worth taking a look at different guitars and you may find it's a lot easier than you thought!
@@awscustomguitars Thin necks can be modded onto any guitar pretty easily and cheaply. I highly reccommend it if you think it will elevate your playing.
Remember you can play the A bass note as an open fifth string whenever you like.
Brilliant just brilliant. Thanks Mary
OK the Austin Powers single-frame slide-in made my day! You're so awesome, Mary! Now this song is stuck in my head!
Exactly!!
"Yeah, Baby..."
Mary I love it when you “get a bit more aggressive!” 😉
Great walk through and thank you for honoring the late great Bill Withers.
I've seen this style of taking and playing by Paul Davids
Krishna Prem ofcourse! Theyre buddies
what a smooth, expressive touch! Wonderful! Voice and interpretation too
She is so smooth of voice and playing.
