  • In this video we get to test drive this Mini Baja Bug Project for the first time and I gotta say it's insanely fast and fun. Thank you to Brian for letting me take this project over to his property and letting me test drive it. This project is a Mini Baja Bug using a Polaris XLT 600 two stroke snowmobile engine and a go kart fiberglass body of a VW bug.

      @@videobyallensuspension looks fine. The shocks and springs are inadequate. A sway bar would crutch the understeer but will cause one wheel bumps to upset the chassis more in a straight line. It's also understeering because as soon as it leans into a turn and unloads the inside tire the outside tire loses power and has full grip. Off road vehicles slide and "rotate" to corner best. The differential will be great on pavement but it's not on dirt. A good lsd would be a huge improvement but solid with a handbrake/separate front rear controlled brakes would be perfectly fine.

    You should build an addition to the cage that protects your neck/head in case of a roll-over. We all like your videos, and we'd hate to see them stop because you broke your neck. A few years back, we had a racer break his neck. Definitely add some safety precautions to reduce coolant burns too.

    cool project and has good power for the first test. As far as the problem with the donuts and poor steering is concerned, the main solution is a sway bar on the rear axle, which keeps the wheels on the ground. Real trophy trucks and Baja buggies always have a sway bar. As an example, when steering to the right, the entire weight presses onto the rear left wheel, which causes you to lose grip at the front. In addition, the left rear loaded wheel builds up extreme grip and in contrast, the right rear loses grip, so the deferential starts to work and only sends all the power to the right wheel because it spins freely, so the power pushes you forward instead of to the right to execute the donut, I hope this helps!

    Okay, a couple things here. Snow mobile motors are originally tuned to run in cold climate, so yeah, you may be running a little lean. Check the output of the fuel pump. Check float bowl height and richen up your jetting a little. Spark plugs should give a good indication of what's going on. Next, suspension in the rear is too soft. You can try dialing in some more preload and adding more nitrogen as well as a few more clicks on the low speed compression, but ultimately, you'll probably need stiffer springs. A sway bar would help a bit also. As for donuts, you have a differential. If it's not posi, or locked, donuts are going to be a bit more difficult. Not impossible though. Remember, you have cutting brakes. Use them. Pull the brake on the inside wheel. Hope this helps you.

      I'm thinking u forgot to mention radiator is right behind seat so what air flow. I'm pretty sure radiator fans won't help if you're blocking radiator air with ur body

    • @MrFixit1
      @MrFixit1 8 месяцев назад +15

      You have the tuning thing backwards. Cold air has more Oxygen than hot air. Hot air would make it run too rich, Hot air less Oxygen per given volume than cold air. Therefore, you need less fuel.

    • @jackfulton6696

Try leaning the rad back a little bit

    @mbrider2373 8 месяцев назад +2

    Definitely needs a fan, add some side vents like window scoops to add airflow, and make sure you are running the proper jetting for warm weather. It's designed to be running below freezing, so if you haven't richened it up, you're going to lean it out, and put some extra holes in your pistons lol. First run out looks like it was a blast though. And the turning brakes looked like they worked great.

    I always wanted a hyabusa powered sandrail, cause growing up, dad had built a VW sized rail, and put a alum. block 215 V8 in his. I ended up driving one and it was the same size as dads, but with a way better suspension. That was really nice. but the hyabusa just didn't have the punch or torque feel of dad's rail. Dads rail had a high lobe cam that made just under 200hp. Dad passed, I now have my rail that I grew out of when I turned 18. Since my legs grew and don't fit. Now I'm old and my fat body don't fit. Better rear shocks or more beefy springs. That squat on the right rear when try to do a donut is putting a lot of strain on the belt and slippage. That could be playing a major part in the bogging. Improper weight distribution is a killer on cvt belts and can stall a motor. The radiator is perfect but needs air flow. A fan will work. It's just not getting enough air flow because you're sitting in front of it and blocking the majority of the flow it really needs.

I think this is adding to the engine over heating beside there might be air bubbles in the radiator we had the same problem with a snowmobile, so I pressure filled the radiator and lines back up just like you have to do with most German cars and it took care of the over temp problem.

      I trink so too, to much weight and way to much grip on the rear.Also Nerds an anti-roll- bar on the rear for less waving.

    There's zero flow on the radiator. Size is irrelevant with no airflow. I cant fathom how you are intelligent enough to build this stuff but still cant foresee a rad with zero airflow needs fans from the jump.

    Love it! Think you could do with stiffening the suspension both front and back also a better roll "cage", safety hoop and it'd be a really good idea to put a harness in. The it looks like the hoop you've got is pretty much pointless especially when you'll probably be halfway out if it rolls and a harness would prevent that and at least give you a chance of not seriously damaging yourself. Anyway I'm sure various people will have different ideas about what it needs or doesn't need, etc but it definitely looks like fun and is a great build. Still think it's time to do a build where you design it first so you have a full plan of what you're trying to achieve. Honestly fixing any issues in CAD is far, far easier than doing the work twice. Just think this is the next step along your building journey. Thanks for keeping me entertained.

    It looks great, it sounds great, and it looks like a lot of fun to drive. And I am sure that you will get it to run just like you want. For a first testrun it seems to perform really well. I think that it would turn a lot better if the front suspension would be a bit stiffer as well. Also a big 👍for Brian for giving you the opportunity to do the testrun, and for filming the testrun.

    I'm totally blown away with the last couple projects you've build, and your trouble shooting skills are great as well. I would suggest your carb issue is vapor locking because your running hot. I've seen this with snowmobile engines before. Get some fans on the rad and many duct some fresh air to the carb area if you can.

    This mini bug is so cool and love watching you build these wild and crazy machines. I do have a concern though and its the radiator. Not the build quality but not having a shield between you and the radiator has me worried. Wouldnt want that rain on your day man. • @tylerwatts1004

    Cool! I think you need a rear arb to reduce the body roll under acceleration and help keep both front tyres on the ground. And the rear suspension is still sagging a lot. But it seems to ride well and when it's dialled in this will be an amazing machine!

  • @musicauthority674
    @musicauthority674 7 месяцев назад +1

    I sorta get the impression that a sway bar wouldn't hurt it any. because as you are steering it the one front wheel really leaves the ground. hindering it's steering ability some, having only the one front wheel getting traction. but I'm actually amazed that it doesn't wheelie like crazy. I figured it would be somewhat difficult to keep the front wheels on the ground. but it's better than I thought it would be. a two stroke with a CVT is always going to be different than a four stroke. because a two stroke has an optimal power band where it runs the best. a four stroke is more forgiving in that respect. like you said some more tuning is going to be necessary. and a fan on that radiator is also going to be necessary. to get the temperature down to where the oil can do a better job lubricating the engine. but it's maiden voyage is a success and it' gave a lot of input on what you need to do to make it perfect.

    You can put a catch tank for the fuel above the carb to keep it filled up...
    And you can move the fueltanks a bit forward to help with balance...
    Scoops for the air and a alu plate to guide it behind you...
    Just a few thoughts 🤔😊
    Keep it up!! 😁👍👍
