MIDI System Exclusive basics - Part 1 Hexadecimal

- Опубликовано: 18 сен 2024
- This is the first part of a multi-part tutorial series discussing the basics of System Exclusive messages. This part covers how to understand and calculate Hexadecimal - a base-16 couting system.
I am using MIDIQuest Essentials to display the MIDI messages, a Roland A-500 PRO MIDI controller and software, the Roland JD-XI MIDI implementation manual and a Mac OSX system calculator.

...this series explaining the fundamentals of midi is the best i've yet seen. Very clear explanations, no fat on the commentary (Ranzee knows well that we can rewind a section, if required), and it moves logically through the stages of real-time midi control. Great editing and production value. Subscribed.
If you don't understand that there are 16 midi channels and still leave your whole setup on 'omni' mode, then you might want to watch a few vids explaining the absolute basics of midi.
Much thanks!
Lucky to have found this series.
And there is a full 31 minute video of the series (the full cut, if you will), which you can watch numerous times - like me - and let the wonders of sysex and checksum calculations bathe you in 'aha' moments.
Many thanks for the comments! The great news is we're starting a new show every fortnight on Wednesday called "Midweek MIDI" - and we'll have guests and special experts. Hope this will help everyone out there!
Good stuff thanks. Good to see you using a Roland synth to do this, with their damn checksum so hoping you cover this in the series. Any thoughts on doing something on NRPNs?
Very helpful; thank you!
hi rapmaster - my pleasure!
At 3:52 you say "And as you can see, F is 15". I must have missed something. How did you arrive at that figure for F? Thank you.
It named 15 but is the 16th unit because of the 0 at the start (which is the 1st unit or 1) 🥴
Using my Atari ST and Pro24 or Cubase, I have a desk ACC called RastaCalc that allows you to translate numeric to Hex whilst working on your Midi compositions. Simples!
Hi ranzee, what is the name of the midi monitor in your midi basics/system exclusive series Videos? that shows all the sysex messages, where can i find it? it looks like a well organised GUI midi monitor for the apple OS
It is called MIDI Essentials - the free/trial edition includes a MIDI monitor.
Hexadecimals are not the most fun part to explain. Curious about where you will take us with the next parts :~) 👍
Hi George :) It is a fairly dry topic - but this isn't rocket science, and hopefully I've explained it to help out someone :) There's two more videos to come - they'll be released next Wednesday and then the following Wednesday. I'm not sure where I'll go with this topic after that - maybe some user questions ... Thanks again :)

Hey there ranzee. I see you've got a Roland Manual🤮.
I've got the worst one ever written by far for the D110. Can you make a video about how to obtain the body of a message from those tables you showed in this video?
Or even better from the D110 manual if it's the same for all pre gm Roland modules.
The oldest Roland I own is a D-550 (D-50 rackmounted). I'm not familiar with the D-110 - so it would take me quite some time and research to produce a video, that unfortunately won't return me anything personally. May I suggest you head on over to the RolandClan forums and start a thread over there? Someone may have already done something - worth a try!
