  • Part 3 of a multi-part series tutorial on System Excusive messages. This part deals with custom messages (SYS-tem EX-clusive).
I am using MIDIQuest Essentials to display the MIDI messages, a Roland A-500 PRO MIDI controller and software, the Roland JD-XI MIDI implementation manual and a Mac OSX system calculator.

I have a Korg Triton and many of its parameters have a range of negative 99 to positive 99. In sysex two bytes are used for this data range. The negative values are [7F] [1D to 7F] in those two bytes. And the positive values are [00] [0 to 63] in those two bytes (hope I'm using the right terms here). I wonder whether you know of any physical controller that would be able to handle sending such values? At the moment I have a Novation SL Zero Mk1. And the only way I can work out to get the full range of negative 99 to positive 99 is to use up two controls. I'm really keen to get control of my Triton using SYSEX rather than CCs or NRPNs going through a translator as I want the ability to work without a computer -- and SYSEX is also just cooler!

For anyone else wondering the same thing: I found a solution so I will document it here for others. The endless encoders on the Novation SL Zero mk 1 can be set to do 14 bit values in Sysex. At first I couldn't see this option in the Novation editor software but it was accessible from the on-device menus. Then by much experimentation I found that if you set the low value to 150, the high value to 360 and the default value to 256, you will be able to generate the full value range of negative 99 to positive 99 on the Korg. I don't know why it works but it does. After setting up such a control on the Novation device I was able to dump it into the software editor and duplicate it to other encoders. However, after uploading my template to the device once more, the encoders didn't work properly until I switched them out of 14 bit mode and back into it again (and saved the template). Fiddly to get going but once it's done, it's done! Now on with my mission to create a Triton MOSS control surface with probably about 35 templates!

Is there a way to get the sysex messages in realtime from the device? I am trying to find the parameters but it takes forever to go through the document and find the relevant registers for each of the parameters (I am connecting to an Integra-7, which is pretty similar to the JD-xi you have I believe)

You can use a MIDI monitor like MIDI-OX for WIN and MIDI Monitor for Mac - that should show you all IN/OUT MIDI data from a specific MIDI device.

@@ranzee well, even midi-ox does not show any traffic when using any editor. the only traffic I get is when the editor ping the device and retrieve the settings

If the document is online you can use control + F to search keywords, sorry if this is late.
