    I love how this was less an advertisement and more of a fake documentary that is from the universe of the show

    I've actually thought about this idea at times but always thought it was something impossible but fiction has so much impact on reality that it creates possibilities to surpass the universe or at least unlocking a small part. Excited for this!

    • @Erick999PLAYER
      @Erick999PLAYER 6 лет назад +10

      What is so impossible about it? Is just like copying a file in your computer and move that file to another, the thing here is that the file is enormous and we lack the technology. Maybe it will not be even in 300 years but 100 or 150.

      I think you are underestimating real science. We have been capable of teleporting atoms from Earth into a satellite and as well been capable of making a particle be in two places at the same time. Real life is by far more insane than science fiction. Take a look at Interstellar, they made the movie based in real science and created a real black hole and because it was science it made space less fearsome and humans were a bigger threat than technology or space. We are close from also the first head transplant, and we could peobably move into creating robotic bodies for brains and we did discovered that a brain can be immortal, just needs a propwr maintenence.

    I do believe immortality is achievable, but consciousness uploading is dead end, as just like a teleporter, it actually just kills you and makes a copy. Genetic engineering to reverse the aging process is a more achievable and also useful approach

    • @samraimey2549
      @samraimey2549 6 лет назад +6

      Who cares? If they can make a transparent digital copy of my consciousness, I'll be fine with that. Correction, the new digital me will be fine with that and if the "original" me complains too much, new digital me will personally put a bullet in his flesh bag to end the discussion.
      In all seriousness, mind transfer would only be viable upon termination of the original so there would only exist one copy of the consciousness. Should the new digital me be concerned he's not the original? I don't see why. Every morning I wake up, I have no way of knowing with absolute certainty I'm the same me that went to bed; I simply accept that I am and function just fine.

    • @tested2032
      @tested2032 6 лет назад +8

      Sam Raimey while your argument that we cannot be sure we weren’t cloned (and killed ) while asleep is true, I think your view that consciousness is just information is not complete. While I’m a materialist (I don’t believe in a soul), your conscious experience, while cloneable, must be the same atoms for you to be really you, as having a copy of your consciousness will not transport you there, hence it is literally suicide

    • @samraimey2549
      @samraimey2549 6 лет назад +3

      "Must be the same atoms to be really you"? Nah, the physical body that you were born with no longer exists, as in the cells that you're comprised of have been replaced numerous times over. By the way, if you were to be teleported by a transporter that deconstructs your body and then re-constructs it again at the destination, you're still you. The notion that it did the reconstruction from different particles is moot; all sub-atomic particles are the same; they indistinguishable; the concept of original and copy have no meaning at that level.
      Sorry man, but you are information, chemically encoded, stuck inside a meat sack.

      its not your cosciousness (it doesnt really matter if you believe in having a soul) its a copy of it. you die the copy of you still lives on we see it with dimi the twin in the show, even they are not the same. its almost like an AI that has your memories and personality.

    I honestly had a conversation with a friend a few days back about never ending life then coincidentally I found this show on Netflix. It’s sad that human life ends but I think it’s important for it to happen. Look at what just living for a couple of years does to a person. Imagine for eternity. The gap between inequality, suffering, pain, and unfair hierarchy would be too massive to bear with.

    This raises a whole lot of questions about the metaphysics of identity. Take Ship of Theseus for example. First, suppose that the famous ship sailed by the hero Theseus in a great battle has been kept in a harbour as a museum piece. As the years go by some of the wooden parts begin to rot and are replaced by new ones. After a century or so, all of the parts have been replaced. Is the "restored" ship still the same object as the original?
    Second, suppose that each of the removed pieces were stored in a warehouse, and after the century, technology develops to cure their rotting and enable them to be put back together to make a ship. Is this "reconstructed" ship the original ship? And if so, is the restored ship in the harbour still the original ship too?

    I understand this is just a promo or whatever, but they are saying this is effectively immortality, but it isn't. Okay, so I upload a copy of my brain to some server.
    All my consciousnesses is, is my brain firing electrical impulses through connected synapses. So, I upload it. My brain is still my brain, and where I live. There is just a copy on a computer. That is what lives on, not me. Just a copy of me.

    • @SikuVT
      @SikuVT 6 лет назад +21

      But then you're bringing up the topic of what consciousness is, and with your statement there's no real reason to say that the "copy" is any less you than you.

    • @holycombat
      @holycombat 6 лет назад +8

      It seems crazy to me to think that consciousness is literally only electrical signals firing in your brain. Something has to cause the firing of those signals, especially critical decision-making.
      As far as copying someone's brain, seems to me all it would be is a map that imitates your brain, and could therefore simulate your behavior and responses, but it wouldn't be you.

    • @SikuVT
      @SikuVT 6 лет назад +11

      then again you bring up the question, what makes you you? some say its your memories and experiences, but if the copy went through the same events, theoretically it would react the same way and thus have the same memories, essentially making it you

    • @holycombat
      @holycombat 6 лет назад +12

    I don't fear death. I actually think that (in a physical form) the quest for immortality is quite selfish. Where are all those people going to go? We already have to many, if people want to live forever, nobody can have children anymore. You are essentially saying that you deserve to live, and the next generation does not.

    Hi Neil and Anybody who can please answer this: Even though we succeed in this, how can we be sure if the stack consciousness is us. The stack could be just the copy of our mind, our true consciousness may not be transferred anywhere but just a cloned backup. This is terrifying and may not be that much useful.

    • @IamJustAli
      @IamJustAli Год назад +1

      They explained it in the series. The cortical stack functions as the main processor for the brain; it has a neural link with the rest of the brain, thus personality developed in a brain is equally shared by the stack. Therefore, if your stack is planted in some other body, it will not be a copy of your consciousness but an extension of your personality and you will continue to experience life as you experience it now.

    Immortality would have so many unforseen consequences. If it were to be available to the general public, many would lead lives that are not only irresponsible, but detrimental to the population as a whole. Death sets a deadline for greatness. Without deadlines there are no achievements

    Brain uploads won't be "cut and paste", they will be "copy and paste". We will still die, but our memories won't.

    Would you have to upload your consciousness though? With advancements in stems cells and genetic engineering, among others, you could incrementally reduce the factors that cause aging?

    It won't be a chip; that's because Morgan wrote the book nearly 20 years ago; Peter F. Hamilton's bionanonics is more likely, but harder to show visually. The cortical stack makes for great graphics.

    What's the point of living forever when humanity can't get over it's own base desires that will eventually destroy itself. I fear what horror immortality could bring from such a barbaric species.

    Wow, I been telling this idea to my family and friends for almost a decade now too. I believed the feasibility of the concept through cybernetics in the far future. Memory and consciousness are currently improbable to store/ transplant biologically. A future idea coming from an unlikely fictional source, the anime Ghost in the Shell.

    While watching that show I allways asked myself. How do they know that the guy waking up in a new sleev is the same as the guy died. It gets even more complicated when there are multiple backups and clones of you. I mean think about it If someone made a copy of your counciosness and killed you but then activated the copy, would it still be you? If it was you then it would mean if you activate the copy of you, youself in your own body would feel, see, hear and sense everything that your copy is doing. Everything else is not you it is more like a child with the same memories. Noone in that show is immortal. The moment their bodies died the first time they died with them. In the end they are all Artificial Intelligences who walk around thinking they are human and acting that way too. The only way to be truely immortal and to be truely uploaded to a stack your whole brain would need to be converted without destroying it. Not even a single connection. Every thing what makes your brain would need to be converted into a stack. That means every cell and every connection needs to be changed into an immortal form instead of flesh or else the moment you close your eyes in your last moments of your birthbody the person waking up will not be you anymore. You won't know anything of this. You will be left and that without anyone knowing. Every person will do that and never will they know what is the reallity behind this technology.
    The people in Altered Carbon are only AIs who control human bodies.

    the show extrapolates a world that did not heed the warning in charlie chaplin's speech(from 'the great dictator'): "so long as men die, liberty will never perish." i think this idea is flawd considering in capitalism one who is in the underclass usually won't stay there. rich people require wealthy and abnle underclasses to thrive. chaplin is wrong and meths won't supress underclasses.
    other than that altered carbon rocked my world and i can't wait to see season 2 appearing :D
