- Loons reacting to low flying airplane! The male yodels, the female (with the chicks) tremolos. These are warning calls. The airplane reminds them of an eagle which can eat their chicks. This video was shot at 20-25X magnification from my Wilderness Pungo 120 kayak with a Panasonic video camera. Please do not chase or approach Loons. Please stay at least 50-100 feet away.
What an amazing video! The same thing happens every day with "our" loons on the lake close to where I live. They get anxious and we hear those calls exactly. It's great that we can see their physical reaction as well in this clip. Thanks!
this is unforgiveable cancel airplanes
these birds scream when their quietness is perturbed
i wish i could do the same
do it

Difficult to conclusively state that the loons are afraid of the plane. I wonder if the parents might be teaching the chicks the calls appropriate to anything similar. I wonder if the kayaker stayed 100 feet away…. The video looks closer than 100 feet….
Kenneth Archambault I start out at 100 feet or more away from the family when I enter their territory. After the first hour or so they often come closer. The video was mostly shot at 50 feet they did sometimes move closer while calling. After multiple years of 4 to 6 hours at a time with the adult female and her various mates she quite often approaches me. I assure you the reaction was to the plane. They react the same way to helicopters, eagles and osprey!
Kenneth Archambault We observe this behavior on Mooehead Lake in Maine. They make the same cries even when the planes are not flying low and whether it is night or day. Any plane triggers the yodeling and tremolo.
What happens if you get too close? Will they go after you like geese sometimes do?
Tallie Allen nah they are just federally protected
Tallie Allen The adults could potentially react like this if you get too close, but the response varies with individual. Some pairs will start vocalizing as soon as they glimpse you on their lake, but some will swim fairly close to you and may even preen or rest nearby. They don't attack like geese do, but they could approach your boat--often stretched out flat in the water--to check you out. Luckily, they're big enough to be easily seen from a respectful distance!
Oh GOD IS GREAT! Pretty Amazing voice
Nah this is nature and centuries of evolution and speciation…
