I’m sharing this video with my wife, who is Mauritian, and whose family was displaced from India generations ago due to British and French indentured labour practices on sugar cane plantations on the island.
To reframe creole identity around the innumerable individual experiences belonging to each person, in the face of such a large spatial, cultural and physical upheaval is to open one’s eyes to a level of nuance not normally granted to minorities in contemporary Western culture. AVAA Loved this one prof! - Especially the point about colonialism and fighting the notion of absolute truths. This seems similar to what Deleuze and Guattari get into in their writing together. They talk about that straight, continuous linage that you mentioned as being a tree-like vertical structure and that the structure enforces meaning and control. They connect it to psychoanalysis and the oedipal complex - arguing that these are ways in which free and new thinking are limited. They even go so far as to call this vertical structure a colonialism of the mind and they argue that instead the world and of our thinking of it is in fact rhizomatic and endlessly interconnected and complex - and that attempts to limit that should be rejected as falsehood .
I’m sure you’re well acquainted with D&G anyway though
It really does seem that Mach-Hommy experiences and expresses the world in a rhizomatic way where different ideas, words and thoughts all connect to one another to make one big overarching creature. Like there are so many parts where it feels like there are no spaces in between his words (or thoughts), just a continuous stream. Feel like I’ll be grappling with this album for the rest of year.

Amendment: So listening further and taking a listen to the current state of Haiti maybe he's relaying that type of shift is already happening?

you got something here... especially with the way they were talking about how "the same type of people are being born every day" and they are reinforcing the same negativity over and over... sounds like they are alluding to needing some kind of restart in order to see change. kind of a concerning rhetoric.

@@zero-rh8nt moment he mentioned Pol Pot I was like oh man. But I understand saying Haiti needs a reset. Like Professor said, it looks like the country is literally unsaveable and unmanageable unless it’s completely reset in a way. The people have lived through so much disorder, corruption, violence, a disarray at EVERY waking moment of their lives. I don’t think they could deal with a good government if they had one as they likely wouldn’t trust it. There needs to be an entire uprooting of the country at this point in order to save it posterity.

If Sonje is not produced by Georgia-Anne Muldrow then that’s crazy, cause it’s distinctly her style and sound. When I saw her name I didn’t need to be convinced. AVAA.
