A male firefly emits a series of enticing flashes. He hopes a female will respond and mate with him. A female from a different species mimics his patterns: by tricking the male, she lures him in -- and turns him into a meal. Where else do we see this kind of trickery in the animal kingdom? Eldridge Adams details the surprising complexity of how animals manipulate predators, prey and their rivals.

That bee/orchid scene raises more questions than it answers.
Life uhh... finds a way.
Lol.. I was thinking the same thing... Can't believe it was censored!
the orchid blushed

1:42 I love that you kept this one family friendly!
I know, Jesus!
You can't help it, you just love science, spacecrafts and pubg for some reason
I can’t believe Jesus watches so many of the same youtubers as me.
Are u following me I keep seeing you

When my three dogs are eating, occasionally the smallest one (Pablo) sends an alarming signal to tell the other dogs that something is outside, when they're really isn't. They all dash towards the door to get ready to chase it. But, Pablo only steps out a few feet then he runs back in to eat the other dog's food while they're distracted. It works about two-thirds of the time, and when I first saw this, I was convinced that Pablo was a cunning genius. I still love the little rascal.
That's insightful, dogs are really brilliant animals. Thanks for sharing
*there
Real genius 😂😂😂😂😂
Aren't we gonna mention how cats transform from arrogant self-sufficient balls of hair to adorable purring cutie-pies when it's lunchtime?

I just asked my cat
She said no
I believe my cat
LET ME ASK MY CAT ONE MORE TIME .
@Yu Hin TAM you lie.
How?
Okay.... Who tf in the animating room decided it would be a good idea to blur out the wasp pollinating the flower. 😂
I can't believe we live in a time where a wasp pollinating a flower is considered risqué.
Ihatequests Dev killing
@@annap3325 I think it was meant to be a joke since there are many other scenes in this video as a joke.
I got no clue 🤣
EXACTLY 😂😅😂
Definitely. Everytime my pet beagle finishes his food, he looks towards me with longing eyes and a wistful look. The eyes man. It's all about the eyes. Those innocent dove eyes make me feel like I've mistreated him in some way, even though he's as fit as a fiddle. Must just be me.
True and our pocket beagle looks so hungry yet he just ate
Aadiv Rath, it’s not just you... my three goldfish do the same thing even if they just ate.....
Killdeer birds often pretend to be injured to lead predators away from their nests.
But if you want intent, more intelligent animals can show it. A dog or cat are aware they are not allowed to take food from the table, but they may steal it when you're not looking. I think that shows both deceptive behavior and conscious intent.
Some spiders wrap presents of insects for the female when courting, however there is a spider that wraps an empty present. By the time she unwraps it to find nothing he's done the deed and bolted.
1:41 I was not expecting that animation to come from a TED-Ed of all places. Bravo.
Now, here's a little lesson in trickery.
This is going down in history.
If you want to a villain number one,
You have to chase a super hero on the run.

Can we talk to animals?
*Disney: hold my beer*
Conclusion: Beers are deceptive.
Filip Hessle especially if you drank a lot of shots till you drop and forget what happened last night
As a guy who watches nature documentaries, I learnt that the animal kingdom is unpredictable and very interesting
and so, yes I think animals can be very deceptive
I want to be an animal behaviorist when I grow up, so thank you for the this educational talk!!
Can we all just have a moment of silence for that firefly who died when he thought he was going to get laid?
I feel like dogs are deceptive. I’ve seen corgis Stop walking and force their master to carry them home on a walk.

Lol the plant nudges his head
Good boy
yeah, one of my dogs learned deception. If he wants a toy from the other dogs he goes to the door and scratches. In the excitement of running outside he instead goes and takes the toy.
1:43 I laughed so hard
Same.
Love the new animation style! keep it up, Ted Ed!
Ted Ed went Japanese at 1:44
Actually, the Japanese recognize themselves by their genitalia. Because Japanese all look the same, they censor their genitalia to hide their identity.
@@romanski5811 I find that very hard to believe
@@romanski5811 thanks I didn't know that

One day I was teasing my dog. He looked behind me like he saw something. So I look too. Nothing. When I turned back he was getting away x) I was so amazed. I was like "He just *lied* to me!" I must have annoyed him more than I thought, though. I left him alone after that. This dog was really smart...
That is quite interesting. Thank Ted-Ed
Absolutely adore the art! Especially the rabbit magicians!
3:05 The Mantis Shrimp, the evolutionary ancestor of the modern clown
This video is my favourite so far
Keep it up ted ed!
Some animals look cute but you will never know what's going on behind it's brains.......
Except when you do
‘Be cunning and full of tricks, and your people will never be destroyed.’
Given how orangutans are known to outsmart their keepers and escape their enclosures, I'd say it's a definitive yes. They pretend that they're fine, bu are actually analyzing their keeper's behavior and their surroundings for opportunities and escape points. One orangutan even fashioned multiple lock picks out of wires and twigs and them in his mouth; whenever he escaped, was caught, and had his tools confiscated, he always had a back-up that they didn't know about and would escape again. When he finally ran out, he found other ways to escape, even coercing his fellow orangutans into masterminding his escape.
Ted ed presents information in such a beautiful way!!! Love to all ted ed team!😊
This Chanel deserves an Oscar for its animation
The little chameleon waving buh-bye to the snake was brilliant. Loved the shify eyed bird as well.
That orchid knows what it wants, and knows how to get it.
I have a severe headache.. And this guy..the narrator.. Calms my headache down.. That's the only reason I follow Ted ed.
Our cat once caught a mouse. She wanted me to open the door, but I closed as soon as she tried to bring in the guest. Then she wanted me to open again, but this time, she had the mouse on the ground behind her feet. She walked halfway through the door, turned around, took the mouse, and walked backwards in.
She knew exactly what she was doing. Maybe it wasn't deception, but it sure worked and tricked me.
That orchid is un-bee-leaveable
It's supposed to look like a wasp
So bad joke
Back to back videos nice
I love these riddles
Very informative. Everything is greater than *GOOD*
The plants face at the wasp pollen part lol.
Thank you for blurring the wasp pollinating that plant. My kid was watching. 👍
Awesome and informative video
1:43 I’m starting to love wasps or this is how gardevoir use attract
The animation are top notch.
I see what you did there with the Bee.....talking about the birds and the bee
4:07 - 4:16 this is amazing
GREAT animation in this one, I like it a lot 😉
Truly amazing
1:42 LOL!!!!! Blurred wasp on orchid action!! 😂😂😂😂😂

My dog limps sometimes and gets loads of fuss and sympathy and as soon as the treat box is opened he runs over completely fine
great keep it up
Wait...
why pixel the bee?
and the firefly looks soo cute, the male really
3:17
Wow, this is truly a Newspaper Zombie moment.
This is a really fascinating subject. It seems to be the closest thing to a hack on reality, a back door. And ultimately, it is so because it counters the perceptions of other forms of life. Which means perception/how things see other things, has a great influence on evolution.
The firefly looks so cute
3:17 did I heard the newspaper zombie sound effect from pvz2
3:17 got that pvz newspaper zombie sound effect
The crunch sound tho
AWSOME video! one thing would be really cool( if you didn't do it already) to tech us about the norse mythology ^^
As opposed to vegetables and minerals? I'd say we can.
1:43 Thats catfishing😂😂
Can we get a video about Rutherford's Gold Foil experiment?
What about that deep-water fish that has a thing sticking out of its forehead and uses it to trick other fish that it's a smaller fish (prey), thereby catching and eating them?
I once owned a dog who was a master deceiver. She thought through problems and developed courses of action to get the end result she wanted and even changed tactic when one wasn't working. My current two are thick as mince and don't have a brain cell between them!
The emojis at the end 😂
*OF COURSE!*
woahh this was interesting
Orchids lookin like a whole snack rn
What I hilarious about this video is the bee f**king the flower.
that was just hilarious
Hey ted-ed... Its been a drought of myths... Please quench my thirst
🙏🙏🙏🙏
Whoa.
Yes! My cats are living proof of that! Pretends to want to go outside, grabs my attention and then runs off begging for food...
Chickens do this aswell, sometimes Roosters make the "Food Located" signal to get the hens closer so they have a higher chance of mating
love the censored pollination
3:31 we really gonna ignore the fact that that mantis shrimp just t-posed on the darker one
Oh my god
T
My dog will pretend to follow me out of the room then run back to eat the food I've left within reach.
Mrs Richards "I paid for a room with a view !"
Basil: (pointing to the lovely view) "That is Torquay, Madam."
Mrs Richards: "It's not good enough!"
Basil: "May I ask what you were expecting to see out of a Torquay hotel bedroom window? Sydney Opera House, perhaps? the Hanging Gardens of Babylon? Herds of wildebeest sweeping majestically past?..."
Mrs Richards: "Don't be silly! I expect to be able to see the sea!"
Basil: "You can see the sea, it's over there between the land and the sky."
Mrs Richards: "I'm not satisfied. But I shall stay. But I expect a reduction."
Basil: "Why?! Because Krakatoa's not erupting at the moment ?
can you guys make a video on Fossils plant & Living fossils? It's fascinating to the fact that plants and animals are thought to be extinct but they actually living on this earth.
My dog once tricked my sister into giving him her seat. So yeah. Capable of deception.
Nice
*Bungle cat!*

Why is it blurred? 1:44 🤔

@Mac Mcskullface that's kinda my point

Yes,yes they can.
How do we know the mantis shrimp knows it would lose. Seems it just got bigger and probably feels invincible.
