  • Join us for a webinar led by Harry Young to learn more about his viral rock map of Scotland, 'Scotch on the Rocks' as part of Earth Science Week 2024.
Harry Young created this map of Scotland by travelling around the country collecting rocks. Harry started making the map in 1992 and added the final piece in 2020. He shot to fame on social media earlier this year when his grandson posted about the map on X (Twitter). Since February, the post has been viewed more than 6.2 million times.
The popularity of Harry's Rock Map highlights how creativity in science can inspire and encourage people from all walks of life, and what can be achieved with minimal resources when we appreciate the world around us. Harry has loaned The Geological Society his hugely popular map to display until the end of October 2024. To the joy of many visitors, it has been available to view, for free, in the Upper Library of Burlington House since July.
Join us on Wednesday 16 October 2024 at 3pm to hear how Harry's geoscience career provided the inspiration for his map, anecdotes from the places he visited and what it felt like to go viral.
