i actually discovered this by accident, purely because i could afford better paper but not better paint. the quality made my art look so much better! and my paints turned out to actually be pretty great!
I think it kinda depends though. I think I got really really cheap watercolors, probably worse than Crayola's and they were CHALKY. I hate the texture. The texture on the paper would be like if you scratched your nails on a chalkboard. It feels so weird compared to more mid priced watercolors which feel flat.
uhhhhrg. Not the chalky school watercolors, just the thought sends shivers down my spine, touching that stuff was the worst. Thinking about it they were the worst in general. They don't blend, they don't do well for glazes, they never give a smooth wash. I'm almost convinced we only had to have them cause they were opaque if used 'proper' and washed out of clothes somewhat decent, in which case I'd say give those poor kids some gouache.
And again, an irreplaceable tip and trick from our incredible Scott. I really can’t express how grateful I am to have found your channel, I wish I knew which vid the first one I ever saw from you was- Because you’re the biggest and most helpful source of inspiration when it comes to art for me, and you always will be. It’s just so nice that you even do shorts for the ones that don’t have time to watch long streams, ^cough^ like me unfortunately ^cough^ but everything you do is wonderful anyways, not mattering what it may be about. 😁
I’m still so salty about the fact that my art teachers said the paper supplied by the school was suitable for watercolour when it really wasn’t so I thought it was me being a bad artist My friend who does art also said it’s my problem not the paper and I’m salty about that too
I worked as a substitute art teacher for awhile & know what u mean. Sometimes a school art dept has a limited budget & has to settle for lower quality stuff in order to get enough quantity to last out the year.
@@A-Minor-Music that's more than understandable. That said, some students are obviously a lot more dedicated to their work and not using art as a "goof off" class. Many of these dedicated students are willing and able to spend a few dollars at Micheals for their own watercolor sketchbook. If OP's teacher had just given them a bit of advice instead of making them feel like it was their fault (aka making them feel poorly abt their art) I think that would have made a substantial impact.
It’s honestly lucky that your school budgeted money for art supplies and a class, at all. Many can’t afford it, or the teachers and students families are responsible for providing supplies. It’s a huge issue that schools suffer from funding issues. Maybe something you could advocate for, and consider when voting for the officials who make these decisions on how much they get/where it’s spent. We really need more people who care ❤
Bert being in professional paints and Ernie being in more "fun" and cheap paints reflects their personalities so well! It's like they painted themselves :3
You should find the hardest color to use in water color and try to paint with it! Maybe make a little Series trying to use that color! Like I have trouble with the color green so maybe a color you don’t use often?
I’m listening to your art hacks playlist while painting with watercolors. They’re the basic kind from the dollar tree and even one with 16 colors from a princess coloring book! I even happened to own one watercolor pad, and it’s the same one as you! :D My painting looks so good so far and im super excited. I can see some ‘Scott magic’, as i call it on it. Those little lines on your portraits and small details are so cool to see in my own art. I’m excited to see how it ends. I’m painting an ocean with a setting sun and clouds (from your cloud hack). Love you Scott! You’re a huge inspiration and super kind. Love from a 13 year old artist
I remember one of my art teachers said that paper is the thing you shouldn't skimp on if you were capable of getting and its something I still carry to this day as its help so munch with the ink I use. If I can afford to splurge or "upgrade" art supplies, paper generally is my first choice
Rockin' proof that the paper makes the painting. I sure appreciate your gentle tone and the specific pro tips you share. (Like the vid the other day about contrast & depth of field, for example.) You TEACH what many other artists aren't doing or aren't consciously doing. Your specificity is amazing and much appreciated. You're making a better world. Thank you.
The Crayola watercolor paints reminds me of my grandmother's house. She always kept art supplies around for me, my sister, and our cousins. I loved to draw, paint, and sew at her house whenever she watched me and my sister while our mom was at work.😊❤️
This actually really helped me. I've been meaning to give watercolors a try and was planning on picking up some quality watercolors this Monday because I didn't want bad paint to affect my experience with them. It seems I should make sure I have reliable paper instead lol
What an inspiration, I started using water colors for the first time after watching many of your water colors videos hopefully it won't be messy. Thank you for your valuable information, Bless You.
I didn't know that it was the paper that made such a big difference. I've been working with the student level of windsor and newton and getting relatively good results but I can see the difference in what I'm struggling with (getting good blends and vibrancy without a million layers) is paper related. Nice!
I feel like these might be great for large distances and backgrounds especially too, since you already have your professional watercolors that you like.
Perfect demonstration of how good paper brings colors to their best advantage! In watercolor, your paper is what you have instead of white paint- it's the source of light reflecting through the colors! Weight, fiber content and sizing all make a HUGE difference.
Buying my daughter crayola watercolors was what got me started in watercolor! It was so soothing to play with the paints and I bought myself a Windsor and newton cotman set for myself. I’m so happy to see this video ❤
Crayola watercolors are so nostalgic for me. I used to sit down at the table at my grandmas house and paint pictures and sculpt things with salt dough 😄 I miss it
hi Scott just wanted to say that you inspired me to get out of my comfort zone and try getting better at water colors I'm not the best at it but I'm getting better thanks to you :)
Hello Scott! I've never been this early to watch your video...but i just wanted to say that u r amazing!!! U have given so many tips and tricks for art and have shared so much of your art experience...! U r a true artist who teaches and guides beginners.... like me!! Hope reading this made your day better :)
Oh my gosh thank you for the tip!! My friends and I usually have a discussion on why our colours may appear dull or why our painting looks off... now we just gotta find the right paper for ourselves 😭 we've shared some brands that don't work for us hahaha
I used to be an assistant preschool teacher and couldn't stand watching kids try to paint watercolors on construction paper. I brought in Canson mixed media paper and cut the sheets in half. This was still not great, but an improvement. Then I found inexpensive, soft watercolor brushes at the dollar store, maybe 6 brushes for a dollar. They shed a few bristles at first but most stopped shedding after the first washing. Much better than the Crayola brushes that came with the paints. Crayola's washable crayons and paints are great for little kids.
I have those exact materials. When I want to water color, I use my really cheap crayola watercolors because thats the only ones I have right now and for paper I use Canson's mixed media sketchbook. In the same size that you have too!
Thank you for the advice. I've been questioned by my mother for decades about supplies and costs. When I was in highschool I loved the Prang moist watercolors. I could get the thin pastel colors with water, or a deep solid color, or thick enough to be shiny. One surrealist picture due I thought of the nightmares I had from the Amityville Horror movie, (it was new at the time). And I had a wall of mini pictures, with exposed hanging wires, and blood running down the wall from the nails. The Prang let me get it thick enough the blood was shiny down the wall and puddled at the bottom. The teacher didn't expect that from a “nice girl”... 🤣 The wall was baby blue, the carpet was navy blue, from an 8 color set. Now I can't find Prang at back to school sales time, or any other time. I tried some different watercolors from Walmart, not as versatile as the Prang, can't get a wet look. But there's more colors. And it has to be good paper, you don't want it to warp while you're painting. 🤦♀️ Check your pounds before buying, 140#. Take care, stay safe, have a nice day. 👵✌️🖖 🙉🙈🙊 🌎☮️🕊️
Good advice! My little one LOVES to paint, and is SO GOOD at it… I wanted to get nice paper, and your comment on getting better paper and less expensive paints was the motivation I needed. Thank you!!! 🎨

Whenever I am in a art block, I watch ur videos for inspiration. It has always helped to come out of a difficult situation in which I'm sometimes stuck for so many days. Thank you Scott, for uploading these videos and inspiring us.
A lot of the differences in cheap vs expensive supplies comes down to archival factors in many cases. When learning, it isn’t worth worrying about whether or not the piece will last for a hundred years. The paper really is the key for watercolor, though. A lot of people get a terrible impression of the medium due to using the wrong paper. I hope one day crayola comes out with an ok-ish watercolor paper to make children’s first experience with the medium less traumatizing because parents and teachers justifiably don’t know what paper is going to work best.
Wasn't sure where this short was going, but that was actually fantastic advice! Knowing which corners can be cut without damaging the final piece is the most valuable way to budget!
I love Crayola’s supplies, back when I used coloured pencils to colour my traditional art I used them before I got a set of Prismacolor pencils, they were cheap (I was able to get box of 60 Crayola pencils for 6 dollars) and they’re really good quality for the price, I picked up the same watercolour set you used in the video and I love using it!
