Releasing this information was a flex that is very dangerous to those working undercover. Mafia or gangs will just hire software engineers who will decompile installers and check for bugs and may end up to the author of the app. This is a bad move and should have not gone public.

But if someone knew they were robbing a bank and agreed to be a getaway driver, they can’t say “what, I was paid to drive.” Or if a thief lies and tricks a locksmith into opening someone’s house, the lock smith is innocent, but if he does the exact same thing to let the thief in, knowing it’s a robbery, then that’s illegal. It is complicated.

Exactly, the fact that people here aren't picking up on that is the problem. It's clear the government simply used "Criminals caught" so that no one will question people protecting privacy being arrested.
I don’t think he was on the basis on privacy, but on the basis of directly dealing with these cartels. They got arrested on the assumption that they did know who these individuals were and still made deals with them. The infographic skimmed over this for simplicity and I can’t blame them but the ceo also wouldn’t open their back door to the app, which is against the law to do so if suspected of illegal activity.
