Most treadmill motors run at a much higher rpm than a drill press. How did you ramp that down with pulleys so you don’t exceed the max speed of the drill press?
    Thanks,
    Paul
My treadmill motor maxes out at 4,500 rpm and my drill press motor is about 1,750 or so. So I would need to ramp down my 4,500 motor to 1,750 before attaching it.

    • @EricStrebel
      @EricStrebel  Год назад +1

I used the pulleys to reduce the speed as much as possible and then the motor controller at that point.

Watching you tap in the bearings and everything helped me figure out next steps. I may also consider replacing the stock AC motor with a variable speed DC motor like you did here - super inspiring!
One question: What modifications allowed you to use the drill press as a milling machine? Is that dependent on what the variable speed motor allows, or did you also do something to the quill to handle the lateral stress? Thanks!

Why are variable speed drill press motors so expensive?
I am a 1 arm/legged woodworker, and one of my toughest tasks in changing belt speed on drill press.
And the "get a 2 phase and hook a VFD up to it" must be limited to people who do not have "double digit" concussions.
I wish there were an "upgrade kit" that could be mounted to a drill press, and give it a true variable motor that I don't light on fire from using a speed control knob lol.
It's already expensive being a crip. A crip woodworker... 10x more expensive and it takes 10x longer to do things. Come on @Nova ... hook a brother up!
Or have #Bosch give us a PBD-40 Drill Press here in the US.

My treadmill motor is 1.75 horse but that still beats the hell out of both my drill press motors. That digital tach is very nice and no more fiddling with the belts. On the reversing switch, why don't you call the directions clockwise and counterclockwise or left-hand and right-hand! Because both directions are normal!
    Don't ever mock left-handed people!
We are not backwards, upside-down, reversed, or any such negative concept.
Down through the years there have been far too many negative comments linking left-handedness with things that are evil, retarded, gross, unacceptable, demented, etc!
Even on my cell phone almost every single app is designed for right-handed use only! As if there was something horrible about being left-handed!
I have even seen parents punish their children in public for using their left hand!
Some people use the term "Lefty loosey righty tighty."
I used to term righty wrongy lefty besty "
Left is normal for us and anything else is backwards, upside down, etc.
    Just a thought. 😁😉

Lol, plenty of lefties out there. Those are good comments. My main thing is for threaded attachments to go in a normal direction, otherwise they come unthreaded during use.

    • @TF856
      @TF856 Год назад

      @@EricStrebel calling something normal is
      a relative term.
Is making right-hand turns when you're driving considered more normal than left turns?
When I give someone driving directions, I don't tell them to make a normal turn, or to turn normally.
They would look at me like I'm nuts, crazy, loony, bonkers, etc!
When working on certain machines, truck parts, gas lines, etc, the "normal" direction would be the wrong direction.
Left-hand threads are more common than a lot of people realize.
As a result, a lot of people just use the term left-hand and right-hand when giving directions or instructions.
In many situations there is no such thing as normal.
In fact a lot of people do certain things left-handed and the same people do other things right handed, and vice versa.
Not all left-handed people are right footed, and not all right-handers are left-footed.
Some things are more common than others but that does not mean that variations are not normal.
It's funny to watch right-handers trying to use left-handed devices.
Normal things for us are not normal for them.
In the past a lot of teachers in schools tried to force kids to use their right hand for everything.
As a result it screwed up the kids thinking processes and it slowed down their learning processes.
Otherwise there'd be a lot more left-handed people in this world.
Similar things took place in other countries.
In some places, people were brought up not to use their left hand for anyting important!
If they committed a theft or other serious crime, their right hand would be chopped off.
When other people in public saw them using their left hand they knew that they were a criminal.
All down Through the ages people acted like left-handed people were mentally deranged or possessed by evil spirits, etc.
There are certain websites that explain lots of things that make being left-handed sound terrible.
They also list about a hundred different phrases that are very derogatory or negative about left-handers.
And some of those websites list lots of scientists, celebrities, actors, inventors, politicians, etc that are all left-handed!
There are a hell of a lot more of them/us than people think.
I was also raised in a family of six, half of us were normal, the other half were right-handed. 😃😁😉
My wife and I are both Lefties. And we are both normal. 😀
All of this is from my lifetime of observations and a little bit of research.
Manufacturing companies worldwide still discriminate hugely against left-handed people!!!
They should all be sued heavily for discrimination!!!!!
In recent years some things have become manufactured ambidextrously, but many have not.
Some people still act surprised when they see a left-handed person and comment on it.
I have started acting the same way toward right-handed people, in gest of course. 😉😁
When they say something like, "I didn't know you were left handed."
      I would say, "isn't everybody?" Or "aren't you?" 😁
Good luck to you and yours, and have a wonderful day! 😀😃😉

      Copy direct from the internet:
Why do trucks have left hand thread?
Some cars and trucks have left-handed threads on their left-hand wheels. This is so that, when the brakes are applied suddenly and the wheels stop or slow their rotation, angular momentum will try to tighten rather than loosen the wheel nuts.Feb 22, 2023

it is really annoying to watch a video that someone is commentating on to begin with, let alone doing it to your own video, hate this idea probably a bit too much.

This would've been much better with out the commentary, and more of a how-to explanation.

@@EricStrebel Don't take it the wrong way, I wasn't trying to sound condensating.
