  • just a quick video showing today's project of installing a Braun makeup air unit automatic damper dampener vent to bring fresh air from the outside into the home and offset vacuum created by over the range exhaust Hood of 400 CFM or higher..
we just had this house built and got a really great deal on a 400 CFM exhaust Hood that matches our drop in gas cooktop.
when the inspector came he said it was fine except he wanted to know where our makeup air unit was installed and of course I had no idea what he was talking.
so I started researching and there wasn't a whole lot of videos on RUclips showing how to install these units or even what they were other than professional videos from heating and Air professionals and I am a DIY sort of guy as much as I can be so this is what I've got going on today I found the Braun unit on eBay I got it for around 50 bucks with the 24 volt doorbell power supply and actuator kit so here we are today installing it before calling in for a re-inspection and getting this checked off the list as it is part of the requirements needed for my temporary occupancy to become permanent and my deadline is coming up soon..
hopefully this all works out good I can give you an update at a later time in the future if somebody requests it in the comments feel free to ask any questions you like..

I’m trying to do this same thing now where do the 2 red wires go ?

All the eve vents right above your damper feed air into the attic. The attic would be a dry place for the wires and damper motor also and a ceiling vent grill would look good as well vs the wall mount. So do it for your bath fan also using the attic air ;)

Hi, this is very helpful. A couple of follow-up questions. How did you wire the damper and pressure switch? In this video, I see the two red wires coming from the outside where the damper is, but I don't see where these wires are connected to. Also, you mentioned in the video that there are two terminals on the pressure switch. How is the switch hooked up? I'm guessing the pressure switch is connected to the transformer. Did you connect the damper to the same transformer? Thanks in advance for your help.

Yes that's correct The dampener is wired to the transformer and the transformer gets its power from the power going into the fan.
The sensor was very easy just drill a hole in the pipe and the sensor sticks into the hole and screws to the side of the pipe

Great video, at 1:21 you mention that the flapper is opened whenever the exhaust is turned on. Do you mean when the pressure switch is activated, or when your exhaust is actually turned on (from the exhaust switch itself). I'm attempting to install using the sequence of the actual exhausts with and bypassing the 'pressure switch'. It looks like you may have clarified this at the 2:27 mark.

Hi, am remodeling and adding a makeup air system too. It’s March 2024 and the HVAC crew have never installed one in a home before 🙃 I’ve had to geek out bc it seems this is not common around here. Im in California. Am i seeing you installed the outtake (interior) register behind the hood duct? Do you have a filter on this? An update would be much appreciated, thanks!

Thank you for sharing your video not much information on this topic on RUclips
Can you please explain how and where did you mount the pressure switch and sensor if possible more details please.

Nice, simple DYI with great ideas & not as complicated as many I've reviewed. If you have the room a filter would be good, however this is a nice job & hopefully it's not too cold where you live & need an inline heater.

Most makeup air systems will include at least a heater (e.g.: a glorified toaster) that can produce about 10,000 watts of heat to condition the cold outside air, especially if you live anywhere in the top half of the USA. For folks in the hotter climates, the opposite problem is removing the humidity (mostly) from the outside, and cooling the air.
Elaborate and expensive systems are sold to DIYers and are provided by HVAC installers with both hot and cold compensation. While your example is simple, inexpensive, and likely meets the local code requirements in your area, it’s by no means an ideal solution. Do you think that you could safely retro-fit some kind of heater into your solution?

I'm studying as well. I think for his system most of the makeup air will be suck out by the hood directly so there should not be much heat/cool issue.

Did you have to calibrate the NS series pressure switch? If, yes How?

    • @StarboundSound

There was no calibrating at all the pressure switch attaches to the pipe and senses when the fan is on and tells the makeup air vent to open It's actually pretty simple

I enjoyed the video. my question is did you have to hardwire anything to plug in the transformer. I'm going to try this

I tapped the transformer into the power wires for the fan that come from the breaker box I connected it right there inside the housing
