In this song, Joe, of Joe's Garage, is in prison and keeping himself going by imaging playing the guitar. The whole album is definitely worth a listen!
Joe's Garage Act 1 is a MUST. The album is narrated by the Government and is a story on how MUSIC forces Joe into a life of Sleezery. Each song rolls into the next, and is narrated in between so must listen in order and 1/2 an album at a time. Some Dirty music but will laugh your butt off...
This is a prime example of Zappa employing xenochrony with spectacular results... The guitar solos on most of Joe's Garage, including this one, were played in concert to a different song and then put over a different rhtyhm section from the studio played by Vinnie Coliauta and the boys...
Jesus wept i used to work all week in social work and come home on a Friday night....i would have approx 10 tins of lager and a few blunts .....presto on would go the guitar tracks of Joe's Garage and Black Napkins...and then just as i was falling asleep on with "Yo Mama!"..MEGA!
That sitar sounding part is actually played by Ike Willis(also singing) on a regular six string in standard tuning. I can get this sound by using a neck pickup on a Strat and using a mini Mod chorus pedal set to 3/4 level, 1/3 rate, and 2/3 depth. It's two chords played in 11/8. It's odd, I can play it but have always had a hard time explaining it. It's very difficult to sing the verse over, but the "outside now" chorus flows quite easily with that part. Possibly one of my favorite Zappa tracks, especially live from the 1980 tour. I get to meet Ike on April 29th and I honestly don't know how I'm going to handle it. This is one of those songs that changed the way I play guitar and think about constructing rhythms. It's not a difficult chord structure, but it is inherently difficult when combined with everything else.
The whole Joe's garage 12+3 kicks it!. Check out Packard goose, and watermelon in Easter hay released on these albums. You will not regret it. John Slop you're a kick ass musician.
At this point Joe is in a special prison for ex-music-business criminals - and it's ruled by a mafia of ex-record-company-executives. This song follows on from Keep It Greasy - get the drift? Btw the guitar solo was pasted in from a live performance, and, unlike most of the solos on the album, it's (sort of) from the same song.

Joe’s Garage & Thing Fish are both exponentially enhanced by sitting down with the libretto & following the story arc, FZ’s descriptors are ace.
So good. The vocalist Ike Willis did Zappa tribute tours and I saw him twice. Really kicked ass.

If it weren't for Frank Zappa, there would be no Frank Zappa. Get it?
Ike Willis on lead vocals!
How come requests are closed? Is this an ongoing situation?
Nah it was just for the stream at that time
