- News about the polar vortex has been flooding social media. A polar vortex is not the only place we find vortices. Vortices occur in nature in many places- from the kitchen sink vortex, to whirpools in the ocean, and even wing tip vortices behind aircraft. In this video we explain what exactly a vortex is and how these different types of vortices are formed. We also explain the common thread between all these types of vortices- the conservation of angular momentum. Another common misconception about vortices is the term vorticity- which actually refers to fluid particles rotating about their own axis and not the general rotational motion of particles about a common center.
