Vancouver? They must be joking. Pay a fortune to live in a miserable few square metres in an overcrowded high-rise apartment building. Streets strewn with homeless drug addicts living in tents. The worst bus trip I ever went on in my life was in Vancouver - squeezed tighter than sardines in a can. The weather is awful.

The medical system in Canada has collapsed. The waiting time in hospitals in the emergency department is 20 to 24 hours. Waiting time for getting appointment with specialist is 4 to 6 months and over 6 million Canadians have no primary care doctors.

Vancouver and Toronto in top 10? That's a massive joke lol. Calgary probably the best place in Canada right now but current the current Crime Minister is making an active effort to drive the country to the ground.
And healthcare too. My son broke his arm in Hong Kong. Within an hour of arriving at the hospital, he was in a cast and was taught how to shower with it. In Canada, 3 months later, it took 10.5 hours of waiting in the ER just to get an X-ray done.
I hate toronto so cold and dead but vancouver is my top 3 forsure i been all over the world. Its so clean, so is the air and water. People are so friendly its so beautiful, so much to do.

South East Queensland in Australia (the Gold Coast area, south of Brisbane) has everything that Sydney and Melbourne has, but it’s significantly cheaper , and the weather is consistently better.
But Australia was one of the most locked down countries during the pandemic.
Same with Perth.
I hate Melbourne. I was born there and always wanted to leave, even as a child. It always gives me bad vibes. I like SEQ but if I move back to Aus anytime soon, I want to go to Hervey Bay. Far enough away from all the city shite and you're not invaded every weekend and school holidays by Brisbane people, but still close enough you can drive there if you need to.
@@Mmwindowcleaners yes it was. I would argue QLD was the least worst in terms of restrictions but the point that was being made is that SEQ is better than Sydney and Melbourne by most metrics. Personally I would escape to Florida if I ever got the chance…

Lol, I left Melbourne to protect my medical freedoms and not risk being locked in my home for 290 days again. They made my wife and I (both citizens) "apply" for permits to leave the country in Sept 2021. The rule was you had be gone for a min 12 weeks. We left and never came back. EAD Melbourne IYKYK
You’ve hit so many nails on their heads with this video. I’ve lived in Vancouver my entire life and have seen a deterioration of standard in living, despite being ranked high on “their list”. Free healthcare ≠ Great healthcare, in South Korea (where most healthcare is private but very affordable)a friend of mine was able to get 4 xrays done in 4 weeks. In Canada, you have to wait at least 6 months to get one. Many people are leaving. I’m really keen on Malaysia….any Vancouverites living in Malaysia willing to share their experiences?

@@sambocap It's a ubiquitous, common and cheap procedure all over the world in places rich and poor, that's all. I can't imagine waiting six months to get one in the poorest part of Africa.
It's a stretch to believe that anyone would have to wait even _six hours_ to get one in Canada...except in the case of a major disaster if a small hospital were swamped with a massive number of injured people all at once.

@@sambocap I'm guessing you're somewhere you have to ask the nurses for permission to use the internet. I'm in a Canadian metropolis. I last had an x-ray 14 months ago. The doctor said "Let's get an x-ray" and it happened 20 minutes later.

That Canada & Australia made the top 30 must be satire. It has to be.
People who are leery of SE Asia, please just take a trip to Malaysia. While I find Kuala Lumpur the capital to be too urban like my San Francisco, I love many smaller cities within Malaysia. Penang is highly, highly underrated. Some people may disagree, but when I am asked how is Penang (Island) I honestly say imagine Oahu, Hawaii but cheaper and with way better food.
Is Penang walkable? Are there nice areas away from traffic to walk for 3-4 miles?
I live in Toronto, and this list feels like a slap in the face every year. Rent is barely affordable here, yet it's considered 'livable.'
same for Vancouver. Rent is not even "barely affordable" anymore. A decently sized condo is around 3500$ these days. I'm renting a tiny studio for 2k. So unless you make 200k or more it's not very "livable". And very few people earn that even in tech.
grew up in Toronto it's the most miserable place I've ever been to. I left 4 years ago to travel the world. Everyone told me all the countries I went to are shit, but they are 100x better than Toronto, poeple are so ignorant and live in a bubble.
I’m moving to Vienna soon after years of living in Austria. I can tell you all that you can get used to Austria way of living easily. Just be aware that knowing german is a big plus while you’re here and making friends is easy if you socialize. Gyms, sports, concerts, university, jobs, are some places where you can meet people because Austrians don’t tend to be that open at first but once they can open up with you things go better.
I would rather move to Austria or Vienna (since people from here say that they’re different things) rather than going to Switzerland or Germany. Taxes are high but you can tell where all your money goes once you realize that medical services and studies are mostly free. Winters are long but you always can get somewhere else for a while with your whole month of vacation and if salaries aren’t that great for you (although they are enough to pay all your needs here and save extra money) you can always work remotely in USA. Give it a chance! All Nordic countries have worts winters and there is almost impossible to socialize unless you get introduced by someone who lives there or if you grew up there. Not because they have more experience with English it means you can get a long that well over there.
Hi, the best place to stay is Nizhnyaya Yeltsovka in Novosibirsk. In the morning and evening, walking through the pine forest to the train, a boost of energy every day.

As a Canadian I would scratch Vancouver and Toronto off the list! Views are nice in Vancouver city of the sea to mountains to Whistler. Well not worth the trouble of lengthy lines at the hospital waiting up to 4+ hours to emergency doctors! Bring cash if you want to move to Canada.
As a former torontonian who now lives in Paris... like going from 10 percent to 99 percent awesome... Canadian standards of living tanking under Trudeau and fools in Toronto city council
Paying 39% income tax and 15% VAT in Auckland and getting nothing for your money isn't a great deal. Sure it's a nice city, traffic sucks, real estate is very expensive compared to other international cities, and it's a hell of a long way from everywhere. I run a business across 150 cities and live in Auckland. Fortunately I can live from home, but I'm looking to get out.
I really like your take on those listings of the "Most Livable Cities." Those lists are probably prepared by journalist who use "Google" for research, and never have actually traveled all over the world, lived in different cities and paid taxes in different countries.
If you are a doctor, don’t go where healthcare is cheap. You will be paid peanuts and be stuck burning your savings. World is different for different professions. Make your own criteria on Excel and score points as per impact on your needs.

As someone from Sydney, the biggest issue is isolation and extremely high property prices. 1.6million for the average home in Sydney. Remote job allowed me to leave Australia and i have no plans on returning. If you have a remote job, South East Asia, Eastern Europe are your best options for tax and lifestyle. Latin America is too unstable and has chaotic polluted cities. Canada is a joke, western Europe has high taxes

You would be surprised how many Indians/Punjabis have purchased gas stations, rental apartments, etc. This is a culture that works together to build community wealth. People keep commenting about the Chinese but they are unaware that India has a large population and many area very wealthy.
Dhaka- city of extremely friendly and warm people. Dunno about living, but I’d love to visit
People are great in Bangladesh but Dhaka drops down in livability due to horrible traffic jam, petty crimes, air and noise pollution, corruption, slow beaurucracy, slow internet, unstable electric grid etc. It's still a great place to invest due to rapidly improving economy and infrastructure.

The liveability index is not about the wealthily millionaires, its about the average person, the level of quality of life that an average person receives in a given city. That's because rich people can maintain good quality of life anywhere, so it's pointless.

“Dying in the streets”…I had the misfortune of growing up in Calgary and living there for 25 long years. One typically arctic winter morning I was looking out the rear window of my apartment and saw some emergency vehicles at the building directly across the alley. Some guy had been drinking, sat down and fell asleep on a porch, and literally froze to death overnight. They were carting his rigid corpse away.
Bet that kind of thing doesn’t happen in Kuala Lumpur very often…

Agree with this list. Anywhere below the equator and that historically shows value towards humanity without northern country interference is a great place to go.

Living in one of those cities that wins top 3 every year, I don't believe it. It's an exercise of buying a place on the list... the councillors from the city lobby and pay the economist magazine for a good ranking, it became part of their city prestige and budget. It's also part of a psychological experiment, saying it's the most livable whilst being the most locked down. It's Melbourne...

The reason you don’t believe it is because you’ve never lived in a third world country so you don’t know how good your life actually is in a western country. For someone like me, who moved from a third world country to a western country I can see that things is still better than in my third world country even tho it is far from perfect. You westerners take your good quality of life for granted. And you guys think life in third world countries are better it’s because you come from a western country with high salaries, so going to a third world country it’s much cheaper for you guys.. but for us living here, it is not cheap at all. Also, grass is always greener than the other side.
Do you really think there’s no lockdown and government overreach in third world countries? In fact, it’s even worse. I agree many western governments handled the covid pandemic in an authoritarian like way, but many other countries have it worse. In Asia, the government was even more restrictive than in the west, touting had to scan a QR code that is tied to your personal information on your phone to enter any premises like shops, restaurants and shopping malls.

When I think of liveable I think of quality of life. Most if not all of the top 10 cities are extremely expensive to live in, with a a climate that many would not like. Some cities that come to minds (for expats at least on a temporary basis) that are very liveable include: Brisbane, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Dubai, Hong Kong, Bangkok, Tallinn. Calgary being in the top 10 is enough to show you how bogus the list is!!!
Hong Kong is the best, as long as you have money and don't make noise about the mainland government. Apart from that , it's amazing place (been here 8 years, love it)
Dictator Dan was the premier of Victoria and was responsible for the lockdown of the state and the draconian control of Melbourne its capital. I live in Sydney and watched in horror as I saw my friends in Melbourne suffer, lose their business and their freedom. They will never forget or recover. I am considering whether I remain in Australia and am looking at options to relocate my business and family abroad. Freedom and a country that is not woke is of interest.

The number of university degrees granted, especially graduate degrees, skyrocketed in the past 30 years, but the prevalence of really educated people in the workforce dwindled horribly. PhDs are like German mark banknotes in 1923. Kingsley Amis' famous prediction about higher education has alas come true with a vengeance: _"More will mean worse."_

I’d argue having a (good) transportation alternative to a car - especially for a perpetual traveler - is a HUGE advantage to living in any place.
Add to that: that place with great transit usually isn’t in the west.

@mr.jayjay2401 Well the USA and Canada are far less dense so it makes sense you don't have the same level of public transit as denser countries. But most large American cities have decent public transit. It's just not a pleasant experience to take it. But there aren't a ton of non-western countries that have amazing public transit. Maybe a few countries. His comment just doesn't make much sense. Europe has great public transit. East Asia probably has great public transit. USA and Canada are probably just below those. Then there are a shit load of non-Western countries where public transport is a complete disaster.
yep. In Vancouver it's not very good. It's better than most places in North America but still not adequate for a city of this size and density. And if you want to go out of the city there are no options but to drive.

I live in Asia and i remember as a kid back in the early 90s how awesome cities like New york, LA, SF etc. are and how i wished i could live there or at least pay a visit. Today, they all look like 3rd world cities with high violent crimes, drug addicts, homelessness etc. Not appealing at all. Its really sad how things have got so terrible in the US in just a span of 10 - 20 years...

My list of top livable cities: Porto/Lisbon, Edinburgh, Tokyo, Geneva/Zurich, Prague, and London surrounding area. Maybe Paris. Maybe Rome. I also like Athens but i dont consider the place livable unfortunately.

lived in melbourne 20 years ago, for a year absolutely amazing city. Returned 5 years ago for my wedding, overly disappointed. Same with toronto, studied university there, now not great. But now we live in dhaka, and we bloody love it, its chaotic but has so much of a buzz. its all relative i guess in your experience
Currently, the best city for freelancers are Baku, Azerbaijan. Nice architect, clean city, lovely cuisine, very safe to walk anytime at night, cheap rent, cheap food, cheap living cost, 4-5 star local hotels are also cheap etc. Move there at least for a month.

Don't move to sydney, i live in sydney so I know. It has very unaffordable to live in sydney. A small 1 bedroom apartment rental about A$3,000 per month. To buy the same apartment about A$1MIL . even groceries r really expensive here.

I used to live in Toronto and i live close by but i would never live in Toronto again. Too much traffic, bike lanes, high cost of living (rent, high house prices, closing costs and taxes)

I finally got to Kenora, Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa, Q City on my trip in 2019 to 8 provinces and 22states. Rode my CCM 3 speed in those cities. LOL. Easy.
Hotel stay was 4 nights in Markham, so 19 miles to the tower thru North York. Was easy to get around on the bike, but horrible the first morning I drove the loop thru construction everywhere, It's still horrible. I was on sidewalks as much as the bike lanes, like on Warren street after dark. The shore path had TOO MUCH bike traffic. LOL. What I LOVED about Ont. were the majority brick and stone houses and even apartments, but yah 4 million$. AB is the plastic siding and 4 story wooden condo capital of the world, it SUCKS. Now they are building 6 story ones just 2 blocks form me, hell. Edmonton buildings are 99% drop dead UGLY. WTF.
Calgary has horrible freeways and now a ringroad that's a prison wall for bicycles. The hills suck too. Only the Yellowhead road is a nogo in Edm.
How the cities from Canada and Australia are most liveable? In AUS you got jab terror and in Canada you've got drug zombies on the streets😄
because salaries are high, political stability, education, healthcare, you know, things normal people actually care. If you are not the 1% you can't grab a jet and go to Romania or Bahamas or Brazil for extra rich private healthcare, you have to take the local healthcare provided by either the government or company, and for that, for the common people Australia, NZ and Canada are the best
These "Most Livable Cities" lists are conducted by The Economist, a left wing organization. They favor left wing countries with universal healthcare. That's why US cities don't rank high, despite every major US city being better than all Canadian cities on the list. (Better weather, higher salaries, lower taxes, much more affordable real estate prices).

As far as infrastructure, no roads (except in Africa) could be worse than the affluent streets (esp. El Camino Real) of the peninsula of the San Francisco Bay Area in California. I'm terrified by car will get a flat in the endless potholes going to and from work. It's absolutely outrageous.

Malaga and Valencia beat easily any of the top 10 most livable. Know it by experience.
Most top 10 are either boring (Vienna or Geneva), have a terrible weather, are in the corner of the world (Auckland), are a shithole of drug addicts of Fentanyl and homeless (Vancouver) or are incredibly expensive like Zurich or Geneva again. Not to mention gastronomy or quality of life.

Valencia is great for families and retirees.
Easily one of Europe's best cities for that.
However, if you're young and single, you'll be knocking around with 21 year old students for the most part. It gets tedious quickly.
Madrid is where it's at, especially if you're a successful, younger and single man. Learn Spanish though...
Food scene in Valencia is terrible by European/Spain standards - because it's still a lower income (but very safe and pleasant) city. Sure, there's a few nice restaurants, but that's it.
Nightlife options are limited though Russafa area is really nice. Great atmosphere.
Valencia is only "great" depending on your life stage.
If you don't have a gf, wife or family, look elsewhere. Madrid, possibly Lisbon, otherwise Asia.
Bangkok is absolutely wild and highly recommended. KL is Asia's Valencia - if you're young and single, don't even bother. If you have a family, it could be an excellent base along with Singapore.

@@francisemanuelrosa7388 correct, from around 8 years, spanish youtubers and influencers have come here for tax purposes. Spain personal gains tax is an up to 48%, here it's 10%. Since it shares it's culture with Spain, and it's very close they choose it as a destination to live

I lived in Vienna, and the worst thing was the public administration. Housing had a wide span, poor standard but cheap, or good standard and very expensive. Rules everywhere, ridiculous rules and they enforce them. we are talking about swimming with fins in a swimming pool, NIEN!, bicycling in a park, NIEN!, but the weather, the price levels, the food, the play parks for children, the pools, just splendid, That I do miss. I would move there again.
Totally agree with you about Australia. My husband really wanted to visit Australia for years, so during lockdowns we watched a ton of RUclips and saw how they treated their citizens- he lost all interest.

I was a travel nurse for several years in the US. Every year industry websites would publish a list of the best cities for travel nurses. Consistently the best cities were NYC, LA, Chicago, etc. These are horrible choices, most travel nurses would not consider. When I dug into the rational, it was based on walkability, average education of the citizenry, ballet/theater/symphony, parks per mile, bicycle culture, farmers markets, etc. I was a medical mercenary; I didn't give a shit how many Michelin rated restaurants a city had. "How much do I get and what do I have to do for it?" I am always skeptical of such lists.

Those lists are indeed laughable, what are the parameters based on? today there are millions of "over the average" earners truly struggling to make ends met. Property (buying or renting) is increasingly more unaffordable in most of the "top countries" , taxes are getting higher, normal food is getting more expensive etc... The supposedly high standard of living in the West is a thing from the past.
Whoever made that list is tone deaf. Vancouver, Calgary and Toronto in the top 10?! These places are rapidly degenerating. Open air drug use, car jackings, you name it are on the rise. They must have used some very strange metrics indeed.
