As a Swede living in Malaysia(countryside), i would say this about Kuala Lumpur: Pros: 1. Cheap - You can eat a nice meal for less than 2 dollars in local restaurants, even less sometimes. You can rent an apt with 2+ bedrooms and a pool for less than 300 dollars a month in certain neighborhoods. Taxis are cheap, transport is cheap, gas is cheap, most things are cheap. 2. Modern - There are many big shopping malls, big buildings and nice restaurants, it's modern and sometimes feels like you are in New York. 3. Travelling hotspot - This is Airasia's biggest hub and you can access local and international destinations in a quick and cheap manner, giving a great opportunity to visit the rest of Asia. Cons: 1. Dirty - I wouldn't say it is incredibly dirty, like Manila or Jakarta for example, but it is still far from western standards, some neighborhoods are smelly with a lot of trash on the ground and are a bit rundown, in this matter, it is miles behind Singapore which many like to compare KL to. 2. Inconvenient - The city looks like it was made on a video game by a 5 year old, except KLCC and the older neighborhoods, nothing really makes sense, developments are added here and there wherever there is space and nobody really seem to investigate possible issues or congestion beforehand, sometimes you will have to drive 15min just to cross the road with your car as there are no overpasses anywhere. Forget about walking, there are very few sidewalks and walking bridges outside the center. The transports are also incredibly inconvenient. Nothing seems thought out in the infrastucture. 3. Lacks culture - Sure there is Batu Caves, some chinese and Hindu temples and streets etc. But if you compare the city to many other Asian capitals, such as Bangkok, Vientiane, Hanoi etc. There isn't much to see when it comes to older buildings and nothing really impressive. Overall, Kuala Lumpur is a nice city to visit, but unless you are making a good amount of money(3000$+) and can live in the nicer neighborhoods, you will be far from the western standards and eventually get tired of the constant traffic, smells and sounds, in that case, i would never pick it as my primary residence. Better options for low budgets in my opinion are Hanoi, Da Nang, Penang, Yogyakarta.
Malaysia is an incredible country. I've living other big countries like Canada, Australia, US and Europe. But nothing is Malaysia. The people are warm and easy to get connected. Amazing food and nature. Safe and their healthcare system is great!
Malaysia is my favorite country in Asia to live for all the things that you’ve mention. People and how they go about their daily life and business make a huge difference for me. It is a winner for sure!
I've been following retired expat RUclipsr Andrew Taylor in KL, Malaysia and it's a place I'm interested in going to when I retire, for all the reasons you mentioned. I'm not wealthy, so I'm hoping they return to their previous visa requirements for retirees.

Having lived and worked in 6 countries so far, I have to say Switzerland is the best value for me. Yes, it is rather expensive, but that is easily compensated with lower taxes and (as an employee) higher wages or (as an entrepreneur) low price sensitivity of customers. The scenery is breathtaking, zero corruption, everything just works and you are smack in the center of Europe allowing you to reach most of it comfortably by train (and quickly enough so that it makes sense to go for a weekend). On a personal note, I also really appreciate the direct democracy that really prevents the extreme polarization and culture wars you get in most western democracies. 10/10 country!
Therefore I'll always be rooting for Malaysia.I lived there in 2013 in Damansara Perdana and I experienced a beautiful city where you feel welcome no matter which part of the world you're coming from! Kuala Lumpur is something absolutely forward!
KL could do with better planning and a proper public transport network. The buses are abysmal and the metro network planning is politically driven to serve largely Malay areas.

Malaysia is like a very very cheap Singapore. It is very clean, serene, great roads and i agree with this message. I absolutely loved it when i was there in 2018 and don't forget you get the cheapest Rambootans anywhere in the world and that is the icing on the cake.

I miss Malaysia so much. Amazing food, fantastic people, great value. I agree with everything said in this video. If you are a tourist you'll like Singapore better...for 48 hours but if you spend more time than that in either country you'll know Malaysia is best!

As a resident of Dubai, second life in Phuket, Bangkok, Penang, KL - even JB is a part of life long strategy for happiness. Medical standards in BKK/HKT are quite amazing, stem cell / crispr treatments are a partner for a long term, relaxed living.

Taco Bell! 🤣🤣 My wife goes for mani-pedi's, massages, facials, hair salons, etc. I go for the food. Don't want landed property, I am so over yard work. Condo's with a nice pool that someone else maintains is what I want...high floor above mosquito level.😂
Grin- It is hard to find a place higher than mosquitoes fly. In Kuala Lumpur, we lived on the 34th floor, Marc Residence, and still had mosquitoes. In Hong Kong, my wife lived on the 81st floor and still had mosquitoes.
I think this is a heaven on earth. I am born and brought up here and have to many countries for travel. I still think Malaysia is the country. Malaysia truly Asia.
Took a short driving vacation to central Oregon. Lunch for a family of 4 (hamburgers, fries,soda and salad for wife) was $115. Rented as small boat for 4 hours - $400 plus $55 gas at $7.50 a gallon. So $570 usd for 4 hours of vacation plus gas to get there and some kind of national forestry pass for more money and a fee for a one day boating license. Then they discretely tried adding a 20% tip which I had them remove and instead gave then $20 each for the 5 minutes they helped us. Bloody expensive.
Great stuff and would like to add that Jahor Malaysia, right next to Singapore gives you access to Singapore at a fraction of the cost! it’s a hidden gem.
I have lived in Malaysia for a while and tend to agree with your appreciation. As a foodie, I found Malaysia to be a paradise. I also think that it is probably the prettiest country in Southeast Asia. I was annoyed, however, by the highly inflated importance of religion in the country.

I have lived in Kuala Lumpur and enjoyed many things about it. However, after my daughter was born, I decided to move because of the air quality issues caused in Kuala Lumpur as a result of burning agricultural fields.

Top quality if you want, Authentic Japanese culture if you long for, excellent local and international cuisine. People are amazing. Arabs, Chinese and Indians there among the Western people. Not as cheap anymore but still amazing value for money. Eastern Europe was great 10 years ago, Spain 20 years ago- today to run away from. You are basically in the middle of Asia connected to all the growth countries of the world. Forget US and Europe. Unfortunately their Malaysia my second home has gone bonkers expensive. Once they sort that out- bye bye Europe. Very stable country. Faaar better than Singapore and cheaper, less stress…best- no US, no China and nobody will take it over. They play all cards including the Arabs. It’s connected to all 3 blocks well. It’s a less show off Dubai without the need of bling bling. Can’t agree more to this article. Only downside- weather is humid as it is all throughout this part of Asia. Maybe Bangkok is better but looks far less green. And then you have Borneo- a wonderful place belonging in parts to Malaysia.
Far better than singapore in quality of life? Cope harder. When your whole system of government is corrupt to the core. Dont even bother about the nice things.When traffic police asks for bribes to not give u a ticket. You know the country is so screwed.
You hit the keys: safety, medical, affordability, amenities, food, ease of travel. I put Thailand on a par with KL but what edges out Thailand is the prevalence of English.

I moved back to Malaysia after few years working in Singapore. I have been to many countries like TH, AU, HK, Spain etc. I am fortunate living in the country with warm people, multi cultural, variety of food and importantly affordable cost of living.
Dental care - a US RUclipsr spent less than half US cost for a week's holiday and complete implants, etc. Transportation is improving with Subways. Grab car is relatively cheap. Staying outside the city centre and using Subways/trains can save.
In 2020, I was renting a bedroom in a nice neighborhood by Budapest, Hungary, for only $115 a month, USD, included utilities, bath and kitchen access, great internet access. All bus service was free for me, because I was already over 65. The landlady was also hot, and tried to get me to learn Hungarian. Her boyfriend is a furniture maker and finish wood trim worker. I was amazed at his $10,000 bench saw and tool.
Andrew is talking about the cost of living in KL around city centre, You can enjoy even lower cost of living in KL if you choose to live outside city centre, 20-30 minutes travel time to KLCC.

I have been based in Dubai for many years and lived in 10 countries UK, EU, USA, MENA and South Asia); done business in 20+ and traveled to 50+. From my experience in KL, it’s sort of in between a super advanced modern (and expensive) city like SG and a charming developing country like SL or Indonesia. The analogous city in the Gulf would be Sharjah (or maybe even Bahrain or Muscat). Sharjah is also affordable, super safe, good place to live, English lingua franca and 20min to Dubai (closer thank KL-SG).
You can get local grown strawberries in the Philippines (Baguio). The Philippines SRRV also has a $50k bank deposit (or less for ex military) while MM2H in western Malaysia is asking for $250k bank deposit (both have weak currencies and both yield 2%…will be less. BGC has nice malls, safe, clean. Tax treaty with the US.
I have been on the SRRV for over 10 years; actually the bank deposit is only USD 20k or only USD10k if you apply with a pension, the other option is buying a condo for USD50k or over - annual fee USD 360 - and no tax on pension or other income from other countries. So Phil retirement visa is much cheaper than Malaysia - and I love it here!
Freshly grown strawberries in Thailand too, but Andrew would never mention that. Cheap too. I bought what must have been about 3-4lbs (1.5-2kg) for around $3 USD. Buying directly from the farmer who was selling from back of his pickup truck 🛻
We have been to Malaysia, but now live in Colombia. From very many aspects (health care and cost of living among others) we find it the best country we have been to or read about. We are NZ citizens.

Yes he has been to several places in South east asia. How can Philippines compare with Malaysia when we have fuel subsidies. Medical care for 1 ringgit in hospital for citizens in gov hospital yet remain no 1 in the world for medical tourism leaving France behind.

I was stuck in Malaysia during the Pandemic - and had the time of my life. Fantastic country, fantastic people. I would live in KL in a heartbeat over Singapore which is way too expensive. Hot women too!!

I hope the Malaysian government will re-adjust their requirements for MM2H! They shouldn't have listened to KPMG, as they have ended up cutting off their nose to spite their face. The change from the earlier version was pretty extreme.
The last thing I want is poisonous American food that I am trying to avoid eating in the USA. I would probably drop 50 lbs in the first month eating healthier in Asia.
When we visited KL we were shocked at how beautiful it is. Unless you’ve been there you should not judge it. We often have prejudices. You need to try it. We love Mexico. But unless you speak some Spanish, you can’t really appreciate it. I am the Spanish speaker in my family, so they depend on me. I am far from fluent, but I can manage well. I could agree with most of what you are recommending except for the comment of affirming that Latin America does not have advanced health care. Mexico for example has one of the most high quality and advanced health care and affordable by far compared to the States and Canada.
I lived and worked in Malaysia for several years, and would recommend the Country has a good option to move to, however personally Penang is a bettet option than KL, its more affordable, compact and has eveything KL offers, except perhaps being closer to Singapore.
U know what is one of the biggest reasons why living in Malaysia is great? The government subsidizes the gas/petrol prices. When the price of gas/petrol is kept low, almost everything else remains "cheap" or "affordable".
Kuala Lumpur has truly excellent public transpo---the subway system is clean, fast, prompt, inexpensive and you can really get around on it (but how late at night I don't know)
Malaysia is not perfect but it is a wonderful country to live. Life here is heavenly. The best kept secret in Asia. The people are honest and friendly. I have heard of numerous stories of visitors being cheated in other Southeast Asian countries.

I have visited Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Singapore, Hong Kong etc. and spent more time with extended family in the Philippines. It may be cheap to eat and cheaper for hotels compared to countries like my native Australia. The two things that differentiate these countries are medical treatment, which is why Australian expats return home as they age and the weather at different times of the year. At certain times of the year these places are unbearable for heat and humidity. Singapore can be just as humid and hot as the jungles in New Guinea where I have worked. Its not all roses.
I have had the opportunity to experience both the Malaysian and Australian healthcare system. I can say that Malaysia does excel at chronic care in private hospitals. But when it comes to acute care you would want to be in Australia for that.
Healthcare in HK is excellent. We have Universal Healthcare and medicine is practically free for locals. We also have access to private hospitals for quicker service

As a resident of Dubai, second life in Phuket, Bangkok, Penang, KL - even JB is a part of life long strategy for happiness. Medical standards in BKK/HKT are quite amazing, stem cell / crispr treatments are a partner for a long term, relaxed living.
I would say that KL is the closest thing to the western world as far as stardards with medical housing ect ect ect!!! looking forward to getting his book tomorrow in the mail and start reading it as his channel is pure gold🙂🙃

In Kuala Lumpur, we lived on the 34th floor, Marc Residence, and still had mosquitoes.

Took a short driving vacation to central Oregon. Lunch for a family of 4 (hamburgers, fries,soda and salad for wife) was $115. Rented as small boat for 4 hours - $400 plus $55 gas at $7.50 a gallon. So $570 usd for 4 hours of vacation plus gas to get there and some kind of national forestry pass for more money and a fee for a one day boating license. Then they discretely tried adding a 20% tip which I had them remove and instead gave then $20 each for the 5 minutes they helped us. Bloody expensive.
Great stuff and would like to add that Jahor Malaysia, right next to Singapore gives you access to Singapore at a fraction of the cost! it’s a hidden gem.

I have lived in Malaysia for a while and tend to agree with your appreciation. As a foodie, I found Malaysia to be a paradise. I also think that it is probably the prettiest country in Southeast Asia. I was annoyed, however, by the highly inflated importance of religion in the country.

I have lived in Kuala Lumpur and enjoyed many things about it.
However, after my daughter was born, I decided to move because of the air quality issues caused in Kuala Lumpur as a result of burning agricultural fields.
those are transborder haze from neighboring countries . Malaysia not really an agriculture based country. It happen occasion during crop season

12 years there forth back. More than 130 countries visited in the world. Malaysia 😅s the best country in the world. Top quality if you want, Authentic Japanese culture if you long for, excellent local and international cuisine. People are amazing. Arabs, Chinese and Indians there among the Western people. Best flight connections throughout Asia….best people, lovely locals. Laid back. Well developing with forward thinking leader’s keeping alive heritage. Not as cheap anymore but still amazing value for money. Eastern Europe was great 10 years ago, Spain 20 years ago- today to run away from.
Somehow I feel you have all things from a perfect world from all places- excellent meat, top prepared doctors….nothing at all I could say is anywhere better. Maybe Thailand somehow better food choice but still in Malaysia you get allllllllll you want. Best beef from Australia, stable. 😅t’s not a speculated country. You are basically in the middle of Asia connected to all the growth countries of the world. Forget US and Europe. Unfortunately their Malaysia my second home has gone bonkers expensive. Once they sort that out- bye bye Europe. Very stable country. Faaar better than Singapore and cheaper, less stress…best- no US, no China and nobody will take it over. They play all cards including the Arabs. It’s connected to all 3 blocks well. It’s a less show off Dubai without the need of bling bling. Can’t agree more to this article. Only downside- weather is humid as it is all throughout this part of Asia. Maybe Bangkok is better but looks far less green. And then you have Borneo- a wonderful place belonging in parts to Malaysia.

I moved back to Malaysia after few years working in Singapore. I have been to many countries like TH, AU, HK, Spain etc. I am fortunate living in the country with warm people, multi cultural, variety of food and importantly affordable cost of living.
Been there many times, making plans to move there. Wonderful quality of life.
Dental care - a US RUclipsr spent less than half US cost for a week's holiday and complete implants, etc. Transportation is improving with Subways. Grab car is relatively cheap. Staying outside the city centre and using Subways/trains can save.

In 2020, I was renting a bedroom in a nice neighborhood by Budapest, Hungary, for only $115 a month, USD, included utilities, bath and kitchen access, great internet access. All bus service was free for me, because I was already over 65. The landlady was also hot, and tried to get me to learn Hungarian. Her boyfriend is a furniture maker and finish wood trim worker. I was amazed at his $10,000 bench saw and tool.

You can enjoy even lower cost of living in KL if you choose to live outside city centre, 20-30 minutes travel time to KLCC.

KL, Malaysia is spot on. I have been commenting as such.
I have been based in Dubai for many years and lived in 10 countries UK, EU, USA, MENA and South Asia); done business in 20+ and traveled to 50+. From my experience in KL, it’s sort of in between a super advanced modern (and expensive) city like SG and a charming developing country like SL or Indonesia. The analogous city in the Gulf would be Sharjah (or maybe even Bahrain or Muscat). Sharjah is also affordable, super safe, good place to live, English lingua franca and 20min to Dubai (closer thank KL-SG).
I will certainly add Malaysia to my list of travel destinations. Thanks!

You are right. Malaysia is the best. Penang, Johor, Ipoh, the highlands. Excellent medical. Best food, great people, safe, blend of cultures.
You can get local grown strawberries in the Philippines (Baguio). The Philippines SRRV also has a $50k bank deposit (or less for ex military) while MM2H in western Malaysia is asking for $250k bank deposit (both have weak currencies and both yield 2%…will be less. BGC has nice malls, safe, clean. Tax treaty with the US.
I have been on the SRRV for over 10 years; actually the bank deposit is only USD 20k or only USD10k if you apply with a pension, the other option is buying a condo for USD50k or over - annual fee USD 360 - and no tax on pension or other income from other countries. So Phil retirement visa is much cheaper than Malaysia - and I love it here!

Cheap too. I bought what must have been about 3-4lbs (1.5-2kg) for around $3 USD. Buying directly from the farmer who was selling from back of his pickup truck 🛻

I love people in Asia. They're polite, hip and fun. Delicious cooks. One party after another
Went to Malaysia, they build their own cars and it's a very clean and organized society that comes off as somewhat wealthy (oil wealth).
We have been to Malaysia, but now live in Colombia. From very many aspects (health care and cost of living among others) we find it the best country we have been to or read about. We are NZ citizens.

Just spent 6 weeks in BGC Philippines and was blown away at the cheap high value lifestyle there. I would love to compare that to KL

Did you meet many people that said Philippines is the cheapest? I found many who said opposite but did not post in vlogs but told me face to face. Only 1 French guy dared to post online Alwin GC. Yes he has been to several places in South east asia. How can Philippines compare with Malaysia when we have fuel subsidies. Medical care for 1 ringgit in hospital for citizens in gov hospital yet remain no 1 in the world for medical tourism leaving France behind.

Jokes aside, KL looks amazing. The Malaysian goverment been taking more action recently about reviewing/revising MM2H. Fingers crossed they make a right course correction to get things sorted out and restore confidence in expats, digital nomads, investors, etc. wanting to call peninsula Malaysia home.
I hope the Malaysian government will re-adjust their requirements for MM2H! They shouldn't have listened to KPMG, as they have ended up cutting off their nose to spite their face. The change from the earlier version was pretty extreme.
The last thing I want is poisonous American food that I am trying to avoid eating in the USA. I would probably drop 50 lbs in the first month eating healthier in Asia.

I could agree with most of what you are recommending except for the comment of affirming that Latin America does not have advanced health care. Mexico for example has one of the most high quality and advanced health care and affordable by far compared to the States and Canada.

I lived and worked in Malaysia for several years, and would recommend the Country has a good option to move to, however personally Penang is a bettet option than KL, its more affordable, compact and has eveything KL offers, except perhaps being closer to Singapore.

U know what is one of the biggest reasons why living in Malaysia is great? The government subsidizes the gas/petrol prices. When the price of gas/petrol is kept low, almost everything else remains "cheap" or "affordable".

Singapore's heath care is ranked 10th in the world. I got residency some years ago. So far, so good.

Kuala Lumpur has truly excellent public transpo---the subway system is clean, fast, prompt, inexpensive and you can really get around on it (but how late at night I don't know)
Malaysia is not perfect but it is a wonderful country to live. Life here is heavenly. The best kept secret in Asia. The people are honest and friendly. I have heard of numerous stories of visitors being cheated in other Southeast Asian countries.

It’s been a while, but I’ve worked in both Singapore and Kuala Lumpur. I fully agree that Malaysia is an awesome country. Wonderful, friendly people. So relaxed and interesting to hang out. If you get homesick for the US, talk people into coming for a visit! Great video, brings back good memories!

I have visited Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Singapore, Hong Kong etc. and spent more time with extended family in the Philippines. It may be cheap to eat and cheaper for hotels compared to countries like my native Australia. The two things that differentiate these countries are medical treatment, which is why Australian expats return home as they age and the weather at different times of the year. At certain times of the year these places are unbearable for heat and humidity. Singapore can be just as humid and hot as the jungles in New Guinea where I have worked. Its not all roses.
I have had the opportunity to experience both the Malaysian and Australian healthcare system. I can say that Malaysia does excel at chronic care in private hospitals. But when it comes to acute care you would want to be in Australia for that.
Healthcare in HK is excellent. We have Universal Healthcare and medicine is practically free for locals. We also have access to private hospitals for quicker service
