- Welcome to Diary of a Porsche Specialist! This is the fifth in a regular series of VLOG diaries of running a Porsche Specialist car dealership in the UK by me, Raj, owner of M R Sportscars Porsche Specialist in Hertfordshire.
In this episode I compare the two gems of the 987 Generation 2, the Cayman S and Boxster S. There is also a clear comparison between the 7-speed ZF semi-automatic gearbox and the 6-speed Getrag manual gearbox. The Boxster S is also fitted with the factory short shift kit, so it has a short precise throw. Apologies for the sections where my head is out of the picture, I am still learning as I go, so in future I'll have a wider angle set on my camera!

Fantastic video, probably the best one on the 987 on the whole of RUclips
Thanks Adam, glad it has been a useful video to watch. I simply love this era of Porsche, the 987 S models are the perfect road cars! Cheers, Raj
@@MRSPORTSCARSPORSCHE I’m in the market for a 987 right now, do you recommend the non S version too or should I go for the S?
Great video. I have a Cayman 987.2S. PDK. This is one of the most informative videos I have seen on the 987. I have been offered a 718 Boxster for a great price. Much newer low miles and manual but think I may miss the 3,4 so am currently torn
Thank you Rob! Really appreciate the kind words and feedback. I would personally stick with the 987.2 S PDK, they are not going to change in value much over the next few years in my opinion, whereas the 4-cylinder Turbo 718 likely will. Already the prices of 981 are higher than 718 equivalent, despite being older - most enthusiasts will want the flat-6. Enjoy regardless! All the best, Raj
Note: In my 987.1 Boxster S, I am able to get a full set of golf clubs and my bag (in the back) and a folding cart (in frunk)! They fit perfectly, if you place the drivers separately along the wheel wells.
Thanks Ted, they are super practical! Thanks, Raj
On track, even without sport+, PDK is an entirely different animal than a torque converter automatic. PDK instantly remaps when it senses you are pushing the performance envelope. In this mode, PDK downshifts aggressively as you brake into corners to ensure you are at the perfect RPM in the power band to optimize acceleration as you roll in throttle exiting turns. Having worked a lifetime perfecting my heel toe downshifts, I cannot match the consistency of "the robot's" gear changes. For this reason, I both resent and love PDK for track work. That said, I'll always prefer my imperfect operation of a manual for weekend driving in the canyons.
Thanks for the insights Dave, I share a lot of your sentiments and observations too! Cheers, Raj
Nice video Raj...very useful comparison in your usual relaxed and friendly style!😀👍🏻
Thanks Mark, really appreciate your kind words. Hope you aren't missing the Boxster S too much while the sun is out.
M R SPORTSCARS ... I’m missing it lots Raj, will need to get another one day!👍🏻
@@MarkEardley1968 Good luck and hope you get one soon, for next summer!
Fabulous content Raj! Great job, very thorough.
Thanks Gerard, really appreciate. Lots more content in the making! Cheers, Raj
Great video! You can't beat a manual boxster but both fantastic cars! Keep up the great work raj, always enjoy watching!
Thank you so much Guy, really appreciate the kind words. Manual Boxsters are very special! Cheers
Gjpopecars both are great, but they are better with a manual.
The basalt Black is a lovely colour. Makes it feel more special than the gloss black.
Thanks so much Julian, I agree. Although gloss black is pretty spectacular when unmarked and polished up, it almost looks like chrome! Cheers
Another great informative video Raj.
Thank you Martin, really pleased that you liked it and found it a useful video to watch. Raj
Great look round both vehicles and enjoyed the review and video
Thank you Mark! Appreciate it, Raj
Wonderful 😊
Thanks so much!
“If your partner isn’t as confident changing gears you could get the PDK...”. Hahahaha. No.
Cheers Andrew, made me smile reading your comment. I said that! Lol. Cheers, Raj
Is the pioneer head has the Apple CarPlay ability? A google map is perfect for the boxster to to everywhere you never been.
Yes Raymond, that is correct, although now you can also retrofit carplay into the standard head units too! Cheers, Raj
Manual transmission all day long
Good choice! I love a manual too. My own personal Porsche is a good old 6-speed manual! Cheers, Raj
I've heard the roof on the Cayman provides 20% more rigidity... Is this true?
I believe so, but still it doesn't feel more rigid on the road, possibly on the track! Raj
I found a local carrera white medium miles 987 boxster 6 speed with gloss black carrera S wheels on it for 12900 should I take it?
I would! sounds like a great deal. What year is it? Raj
M R SPORTSCARS PORSCHE SPECIALIST thanks Raj, it is a 2007
Should I look into a 981 or 987.2? 6spd.
I’d try both and see which you prefer, Thanks! Raj
