My dad had both a 70 (long wheelbase) and a 72 (short wheelbase). He bought the 70 brand new and the 72 came along later when the frame got too bad on the 70. They both had the 240 with the 72 being the three in the tree and the 70 an automatic. No power steering or brakes on either one. I took my driver's test with the 72 (short wheelbase) in December in a snowstorm. The cop was impressed with the way I pulled it out of a skid and was more than happy to issue my license. I did not tell him that I had been driving it for 3 years before I was old enough to get my license! The frames like to rot out around the steering box so you might want to check that out. Dad would have loved this video but sadly he passed away in June of 2023.

I usually get the cheapest rust converter, spray it on, let it pickle, then do the clean up, then use regular roof paint for cold climate, that's "on rust" application. For quick and dirty, it's perfectly ok and it will last. It's meant to take on snow dragging on top of it, which is going to peel off lesser paint, so, for the underbody of a car, it's perfectly acceptable.
I have (luckily, only) one project that I'm working on with a neighbor of mine. Full restoration of a 1992 Nissan R32 GTR. It's A LOT of work let me tell you lol. Love the work that you do Jared!
The off-hand comment about using license plates to patch the floor gave me a PTSD flashback to a late 80s Geo Tracker that had 70% of the passenger side floorboard made of old license plates. I don’t know how the seat didn’t just fall straight down onto the road. It was a dictionary definition of a Deathtrap.

I've done the cvs, steering, rocker cover gasket, crank angle sensor, pcv system and currently I'm fighting with the 42re. I have new ball joints for it, engine and trans mount. New speakers and mounts. After thats its an exhaust and some electrical work to figure out the power drain. It lives at home with me. I also have a 1997 Ford Falcon, lowered and exhaust. I have a T5 gearbox and all the bits to convert it, but as I'm in between houses and living with family, its on a mates farm and I havnt worked on it in a bit. The plan is to make it a drift/burnout car.

I had the funniest thing like that happen, it was a small inspection mirror that was wedged so I could see what was going on, fell out, maybe 8-10 inches... no big deal. But got me right in the cheek in an odd spot... little inspection mirror!!! Had a black eye for like 10 days 😅
I probably cheese people off when I add a comment about wearing steel toecaped boots - but you really should ! Saw Freiburger on a video damn near drop an oily cylinder on his foot once and he just wears sandles ... .. .
I am moving to Georgia in April and I want this van. I learned how to drive manual transmission on a 65 Ford Econoline with a straight 6 and 3 on the tree. I would even take the original engine with it and rebuild it and put it back in. My uncle had a van similar to this year so, it's a sentimental thing for me. We should definitely talk Jared.
I enjoyed this video. This van will find a good home. As far as my projects go, I took a break for the holidays. I'm chasing an evap gremlin in an Escalade and my RAV4 overheated (coolant leaked out from a bad water pump.) I hope the head gasket and head are okay.
I like those old vans, I hope it all turns out well. I had to use a forklift to pull a 350 from a Rally STX & put in a 327. the GMC is not fun... just glad I had help & the forklift at that time. Godspeed.
Ahh the memories had a 71 windowless econoline my stepdad had used for business and gave me to go to senior of high school. Some wide tires white spoke wheels and a lot of blue shag carpet and I was party central in 1975
14:50 my 5 year old came into the garage and managed to spray WD40 in her eye. I was really happy it wasn't the brake cleaner sitting next to it. After we got done with the eye flushing, crying, screaming, and snuggling, we had talk about listening and not touching things. I sold my GX470 and bought a new car so I can get my other projects done.

Ahhh yes i like the eay your rebuilt the that fords undercarriage. I see you put new leaf springs, new drums, new frame, new pumpkin. The Derek way of rebuilding is rubbing off on you. 👍👍
The 300 straight six is almost bullet proof. Case in point, having just got my license in the late 90's, my parents wouldn't let me drive my 1990 Bonneville until the 1986 E-150 with straight six died. Ok, we kill the van! Yeah, about that. I beat that poor thing every which way you can think of. Short of draining the oil and redlining it (which is cheating), I beat on that so bad I started to feel bad for it. Even had the thought of making it into an A-team tribute van since it had taken things it really shouldn't have been able to. However, sadly, the floor was so rotted that one day walking thru the back, my foot went thru the floor and I was standing on the rear end, at which point she was donated to Rawhide. Tough as nails motor for sure!
I've owned every generation of the Ecnoline van from the early mid engine to the 05 E250 that I currently drive and the third gen sitting in the back yard. I really like the Ford van up to the Transit. The 240 and 300 sixes are really hard to beat.
Simple Green Industrial, not the green stuff from the grocery store, mixed 50/50, works great in ultrasonic cleaners. Regular old Pine-Sol also works well. Either one should be safe for just about any carb parts, including rubber and plastics.
When you said cemetery in that area of Georgia my mind instantly went to that Tri-State Crematory that had that big scandal awhile back and I wondered if it might have been from there.
The underside looks very good and I think the van would look very good if its outside (and even inside) was painted with this kind of paint, in a cool color!
Toward the driver and up is reverse, toward the driver and down is 1st, 10:55 up and away from driver is 2nd, and down and away from driver is 3rd! Jet or metering needle is stuck or plugged!

@@TheQuestionableGarage only at the worst possible time though. It's a gift that keeps on giving lol
I’m glad you’re okay after the exhaust pipe assaulted you. Ouch!!! Please be careful! I really admire your dedication to finding a new family for the Econoline and I loved this episode (except for the part where you got hurt 😞). Editor Duane, your musical choices were spot on again! Y’all are awesome and I really appreciate your hard work and the goodness you bring to RUclips and the world!
Was under my project car last week and had my heavy magnetic light fall a few feet onto my nose. I literally saw stars and just called it a day lol
Sometimes that’s the best option
I had the funniest thing like that happen, it was a small inspection mirror that was wedged so I could see what was going on, fell out, maybe 8-10 inches... no big deal. But got me right in the cheek in an odd spot... little inspection mirror!!! Had a black eye for like 10 days 😅
@@bgee461 ouch lol
Thank you for keeping that ford going
Love the reference with the license plate floor patching :)
Keep it around, we love the van.
I like those old vans, I hope it all turns out well. I had to use a forklift to pull a 350 from a Rally STX & put in a 327. the GMC is not fun... just glad I had help & the forklift at that time. Godspeed.
Good to see you finishing this project.
I am 100% interested in this van when the time comes.
Ahh the memories had a 71 windowless econoline my stepdad had used for business and gave me to go to senior of high school. Some wide tires white spoke wheels and a lot of blue shag carpet and I was party central in 1975
"If the van's a-rockin', don't come a-knockin' " huh? 😆
Hi Jared nice video 📹 and workmanship almost like my 68 Sport Van Both are looking of the chain ⛓️!!! TORQUE WRENCH ALLTHE LIFTERS AND PISTONS ALSO GET NEW SPRINGS FOR THE LIFTERS AND CARBURATOR AND RUN IT FOR US BRING TO YOUR BUYING DINO SE THE HORRS POWER
I wish that camera trick could be applied to real life. Because the world could use about 4 Jareds.
Tough as nails motor for sure!
great story Jared. Work safe!
I’d drive that! Nice work. Thanks for sharing! ❤️😎
I've owned every generation of the Ecnoline van from the early mid engine to the 05 E250 that I currently drive and the third gen sitting in the back yard. I really like the Ford van up to the Transit. The 240 and 300 sixes are really hard to beat.
Yeeessssss! Been waiting months for this video! Thanks Jared
Simple Green Industrial, not the green stuff from the grocery store, mixed 50/50, works great in ultrasonic cleaners. Regular old Pine-Sol also works well. Either one should be safe for just about any carb parts, including rubber and plastics.
And both make the garage wife friendly (the smell)
When it came to getting the funk out Dwayne did a great job!!
Oh man TKO 😮
Looks great!
Stay safe!
When you said cemetery in that area of Georgia my mind instantly went to that Tri-State Crematory that had that big scandal awhile back and I wondered if it might have been from there.
I would like to welcome today's new sponsor! Eye protection!
Georgia potentially getting 15 inches of snow? That’s more snow than what Minnesota has gotten in the past 3 years combined.
Use Zep heavy duty orange degreaser in your ultrasonic. It is by far the best cleaner.
Oooooowwwwwwwwch!
That hurt Jared!
Been there done that 😂😂🤦🏼♂️
Damn I wish I was closer, that is one of my favorite vehicles, an "Inline Econoline".
