In this video Guitar World's gear editor Paul Riario demonstrates the features of the Orange Dual Terror amp and cabinet.
this amp sounds amazing. Im looking since some time for a home amp. I have looked into all the lunchboxs, including the mini rectifier. I think this review represents the tone of the amp. I have listened this several times and the sounds is really warm. I think this will be my first tube amp ever. I hope to make the right decision.
Wes Borland is (according to me) one of the most innovative guitar-players and he is using orange amps :)
I bought one of these today, and have been running it through a Marshall 1936v cab. I also bought an Orange foot-switch, that I can plug into the back of the amp and switch between the two channels.
This is an awesome amp! It blows the socks off my JMP-1+8008 combination that I had been using. In 30W mode, this amp is LOUD!
Thank you so much for showing some clean tones! I came for the crunch, I stayed for the clean.
A real world solution. Fantastic fun with real tube tone and harmonics all over the place. Everything you'd want if classic rock and blues live or recorded is your bag. Astonishing
I have the micro terror, then picked up a micro dark and then today played the dual terror. I am really digging the sound you can get from these little amps. I actually enjoy them more that my h and k amps. The Marshall is still hard to beat though but for the price they really sound nice. btw nice demo....have to think about picking one up.
Thanks for the review! Since 10 months i am the proud owner of Dual Terror Amp. I have only good words for this amazing amp.
essentially class A has power tubes running all the time and A/B switches or does a push-pull type thing so your tubes last longer (correct me if im wrong on that one) some say that one has more headroom than the other but it really just comes down to the amp it self
You have no idea. I just walked in to a guitar store today and heard one of these. Do not underestimate this thing. I thought there was no way this thing could be that badass...I was wrong, that tiny head brought me to my knees. This is going to be my next amp purchase.
@ghsr82 think wattage in terms of tubes, they release a whole lot more volume per watt, while solid states are processed, they release far less. 20 watts of tube can easily out run a 40 watt solid state. I have gigged with one of these and they are plenty loud, i was also using a 2x12 cab as well, i kept up with my buddies half stack. When you mic this thing, use it like a moniter, then the sound goes through the house. Flawless.
I was very happy with the sound of my Tiny Terror but the lack of another channel came a slight problem when gigging. The next step was to purchase Dual Terror which I did. I have to say that I like it even more and it is still not too big to drag around.
Can you use a footswitch to switc between the channels on the dual terror
+Brian Pedroza yes
+Brian Pedroza Yes you can.
I used the original Tiny Terror through a Peavey 4x12. Was fine doing small clubs etc on it's own without going through the P.A. Also did many festivals through the P.A and sounding great. Other gitar player had a 100w Marshall JCM with 2 4x12's and it out did him everytime. Hope this helps
I just use a clean channel with different boost/drive/fuzz going in front. Is this amp loud enough with that for practice with loud drummer and 2nd guitar player and for small club gigs? I play through an orange 2x12ppc now with a bogner shiva. I love it but would like to downsize if possible. Thanks for your thoughts!
yeah, I bought an AC30 Custom. hated it. It sounded like you were hearing the amp through a wall. Took it back to the store. Bought this Orange DT30H and an Orange Cab. Turns out it is just an AC30 with more Gain and break up. I think I'm just a Marshall or nothing guy. My Marshall amp has so much more Presence. I even tried adding an equalizer pedal to the Orange to try a mid boost and then tried a mid scoop. No Dice. I run my Marshall hard mid scooped. Don't get me wrong. If you only had an Orange or VOX amp you would be perfectly happy until you bought your first Marshall. Orange and VOX have a vintage fizzy muffled sound I found out I'm just not a fan of. I'm incredibly disappointed. I was so excited to get this amp today and run it stereo with the Orange and my Marshall. I'm taking the Orange Amp and Cab back to the store this weekend, and I'm just going to buy another Marshall. I will say this for Orange. Their Orange Detonator ABY switch is by far the best one out there. This is the dangers of ordering an amp you've never actually been in a room with. Amps always sound better on RUclips. (I primarily play a Gibson Les Paul Standard 60s and a PRS McCarty 594 if that matters to anyone). Oh yeah, the Dual Terror doesn't take pedals very well either. I tired boutique OD pedals, Friedman BE and Dirty Shirley OD, Strymon Sunset, Big Sky, TImeline, a Tube Screamer, and a Echo plex w/ an Ecoplex preamp. Nothing sounds quite right.
@akamarutv I fully agree. I had the opportunity to play this last week at Sweetwater Sound, and the clean was to die for. I then switched over to the fat channel and it just rocked. I want one really bad. I cannot afford the larger models, but I think the Dual Terror might be the ticket for me. would love to get a matching 2x12, but those are pretty expensive as well.
@instinctfx exact same thing i did, I'm considering swapping out the power transformer for some more tonal range...My PRS baritone sounds so damn good through the dual! Great Amp!!!
Its only chorus, phaser, flanger, delay and reverb that will suffer. The others you mention are best infront of the amp. But to be honest these amps are designed to be nearly fully cranked...i.e driving the power output valves to distortion too which having an effects loop wouldn't solve completely
Bring me the horizon have used them before and have been the best concerts i have ever seen
its a SC245. The Tremonti model has an open coil humbucker and a trem.
I've tried the original Terror, it kicks ass. Gobs of gain, monster tone. Plug in any decent Gibson or PRS and you're in business.
for the low wattage its for the studio so u can crank it up to get better tone.... but not as loud as high whattage but still gettin same tone.. you know like when you crank your amp higher it getts beter tone.. so its for tht reason so you can crank it up to get beter tone
Saw Deftones over a week ago and the dj and bassist both had orange cabinets.
I was all set to get the tiny terror 10"combo for practice etc but after watching this again its got me thinking lol. This option would no doubt be better in a live situation, I have two 1x12 marshall cabs already, plus an orange 4x12 but that rarely gets moved lol
generally-speaking, modulation & time-based effects(chorus, delay, reverb, etc.) sound MUCH better in the effects loop because the loop is AFTER the preamp in the signal chain... do you want distortion applied to your delay repeats, or delay added to your distorted tone? BIG difference. See what I mean?
(if you just use the clean channel and get all your dirt from pedals, then no, not having an effects loop wouldn't matter.)
BEST CLEAN TONE I'VE EVER HEARD!
I didn't fall in love with the tiny terror at first. In fact, I didn't see what the fuzz was all about. After a while I tried it again with a tube screamer and oh my fucking god...rock has never been heavier!
that guitar has some epic sustain.
@suihkubad I totally agree with that. If it's too expensive what other guitar would give you the same tone and playability? I think that way with amps too and cabs. A lot of people get a really nice head and then get a cheapy little cab and it's like whats the point of that? you just spent $1500 on a head and now you ruined it by getting a crate cab (not dissing crate there's just better stuff even for the price) like jet city has GREAT cabs for the price. and the 4x12 is only $400.
What are the differences between class A and class A/B?
@sukum17 I have one of these it will handle any gig. Big or small. For stadiums just mic up the cabs.
@suihkubad While sound and feel are subjective, quality is objective. Not saying that PRS is lacking in quality
@sukum17 this head is awesome. the tiny terror is amazing for gigs.
@0ftheWALLS i've played both and for the money yes the prs is a better buy, but the studios do have slightly richer tone. However i have an sg standard which is incredible and cost slightly less than a studio
god do i wish this thing had an fx loop
I just don’t understand why they couldn’t have added it in at 600 to 800 dollars it should !
Is the cab the open or closed back? It looks like the closed back but i can't tell for sure!
the guitar is called prs tremonti bit like a gibson but a lil diffrent
He has profficent legato skills too.
Yeah. A footswitch would make or break this for me. The tones are great. Great, classic distortion.
How's the clean headroom of this amp? Is it loud enough for Gigs?
My BAD, I took a look at this video again and the Tiny terror Channel clean really is clean. Same for the Fat channel also. Too many years of loud music LOL
@metalmachine00 I'd disagree. Tube amps are pretty spendy. The Dual Terror, and several other Orange tube amps are pretty darn reasonable in comparison.
The liquid distortion setting at 5:00 ......... HOW THE HECK CAN THERE BE SUCH AMAZING SUSTAIN!!!!!!!! haha it awesome. great amp too
marshall's peavys and line 6 is the most i seen been used in youtube
@XxxxxJamesxxxX I wouldnt even say overpriced. You get a PRS SC245 for about the price of a Gibson Les Paul Standard and i think your getting way more for your money with the PRS.
wow, great sound!
whats the signal chain for this recording.. i see SM57.. any preamps? or straight into an interface or recorder
Peavey and Mesa are fine for people doing the whole chugga chugga squeee "djent" guitar thing, or mega fast arpeggios and shred, but some people just want to feel the heaviness in their bones when they blast out a killer riff or even just a droney open chord. That's where Orange amps come in.
what is the name of the song he played with the clean tone?
i don't think it comes with one but im pretty sure you can order one.
@XxxxxJamesxxxX i agree, prs are awesome guitars, but they are a bit too expensive
which is better for the buck, this or its equivalent marshall? or perhabs a line6?
if i have it on 2 tubes occasionally for home use would it eventually put wear on two tubes or will it switch around??
pauls reviews are great but why can't he demonstrate amps using both a strat and les paul style guitars?
If you are showing something related to SOUND, make it high rez so we have the best chance of actually hearing the tones.
Bro this video is over a decade ago. Monitors were alot different then and everything went HD in like 2010 which changed the way everything was viewed.
how loud can this thing get? not loud enough to gig with i assume?
open back cab or closed? I assume closed but just to clarify, por favor.
the clean song sounded so fucking brilliant xD
i havent heard one good guitarist with an orange as his amp of choice. I've heard other videos, and other people play it. just not my thing and feel its the image people are going for. Mesas, Peavey, and Marshalls, for sure. Might as well retolex my 5150 and cab orange and you get the same effect...
What model is that PRS guitar?
can i use the 112 cabinet with dual terror, what s the difference?
+Mike Michaelidis Yes you can use a 1x12. With one speaker you'll have probably a tighter sound and less volume. More speakers, more volume.
Orange amps are sick!
@deathblade7 the jack is labeled "guitar" but it looks like output. aha
Haha i have heard orange cabs are amazing and i'd love to try one. But yeah the high end prs are amazing! far better than any gibson i'v heard
@revolutionday1 tell you the truth epiphone has a good rythym sound but the pickups arent very active for my taste as i do shredding and blues so the guitars dont hold up as well as a prs even with the stock pickups.
is it me or is the guitar plugged into the 1/4" jack labeled "output"
That note went on forever :o
whats that jazzy riff that he playS about 2:25?
it sounds like the intro of all guitar world videos ;P
does he know that distortion can also be used for chords?
That is a FAB tone.
Can you please compare the dual terror with the dark terror??
Can you put 30 watt mode on and play it though a Fender blues junior 15 watt amp? Will Dual terror be better with a different amp than a Fender amp? Thanks
it is a separate amp,you need a speaker cabinet
the thing i dont like is the gain, its not heavy enough for me
however it does sound good.
Orange is way better than most amps.
@posiedonpowertrio - anything from Orange sounds great - but they are abit expensive. Go to Humbucker Music(dot)com to buy. American Musical and zZounds(same company) are now carrying Orange. So is Sweetwater. Prices don't seem to vary at all between sources(I think Orange has something to do with that).
You'd be surprised with the tones you can get out of a mesa, contrary to popular belief mesa don't just chug :) I can't speak for all of them but I can definitely vouch for the versatility of a roadster.
if this had an effects loop, it could be the perfect amp head
Was it designed by Ade?
is he using a cort zenox seires guitar?
Peavey 5150 (original; my personal favorite) or Mesa/Boogie Mark IV.
@drewchaos yes 30 tube watts is enough!
@jamesryan0929 to be honest, jackson wasn't bound for great things from the beginning
@godlikecharacta how you say a guitar company is overrated? Guitars are a matter of taste and everyone picks a guitar suited best for them
So that you can crank it and get the tube saturation without blowing your ear drums. And so you don't piss off your neighbors. Well, you'll only piss them off half as much.
what's the name of that guitar?
does it come with a footswitch?
i so much fucking want a PRS dave Navarro
Sounds awesome, BUT he has a PRS 245. What amp doesn't sound great whit that. He should use guitars like some lower end Gibson Les Pauls and Fender Standard Stratocasters.
It isn't a bad amp. It sounds like a JCM 800 distorted and has a distinct clean sound that I like. So why the hell did they wrap the sound in bright orange and then name it as such? It looks like a Woodstock amp for hippies; not a serious amp for professionals.
@giffy5775 It is foot switchable.
Paul rules! Seen him do some mega amazing blazing playing. When you can do that then your pun's a cool... ha ha
what guitar is this?
@misztal2112
With a boost sure, but that's not what the thing is designed for.
Check out a blackstar, or a Jet City
i dont get this low watt mode...i mean ,why?!for example 50 watts isnt 10 times as loud as 5 watts
what song did he play at 4:10?
i love that amp
@41224jason He plays a ESP too
Pity there is no effect loop on this. The single tone control as the EQ, i could live with. No reverb either.
This amp can actually get a VERY good metal sound (watching this its hard to believe i know lol) but in my opinion if you want a great metal sound and you're "on a budget" kinda thing or you just want an incredibly diverse amp this is a great one to check out, id say for metal heads (or anyone) hook this bad boy up to a mesa cab or a diezel cab and you've got an expensive sound at a decent price :) PS metal heads. BUY A TUBE SCREAMER FOR THIS AMP!!! it sounds like jizz!
@BRADblahblah
Haha, Oh wow. Where to begin? Low watts = bedroom use or small practice space amp. Higher wattage amp, more headroom, less compression. Power rating has NOTHING to do with perceived loudness. A 30 watt tube amp is significantly "louder" than a 30W solid state amp. And generally speaking, you need a roughly 10X increase in power output to double the volume. So a 50W amp is 2X the volume of a 5W.
@TheSchoolsux345 you ever played a PRS? You cant compare it with fender or gibson. Its totally different. Not saying better or worse but different. Copying a les paul shape doesnt mean anything
