- In this video the Uintah Railway Mallet No. 50 and a 2-8-8-2 Rio Grande articulated locomotive take a work train from Klamath Falls to Lakeview on the Oregon, California & Eastern.
The prototrype Uintah Railway No. 50 was a narrow gauge articulated 2-6-6-2 that hauled Gilsonite from the mines near Dragon, Utah to the Uintah Railway's connection to the Rio Grande at Mack, Colorado.
The Uintah was a fascinating narrow gauge mountain railroad that made the ascent over Baxter Pass with 7.5 percent grades and 66 degree hairpin curves. Number 50 and its twin, Number 51, were built by specially designed and built Baldwin to handle these extreme conditions.

Great video, I really like the two shots of the train going over the two raised trestle bridges.
What an awesome setup! (Ans that Uintah/Grande work train was pretty swell)
A rare locomotive combination, very nice to see.
Very interesting and unusual to say the least. The Mallet is well documented and worth a second look. It is, however, the 2-8-8-2 Rio Grande which is the gem, in my opinion. As I recall from archival material, these were compound Mallet types that worked well enough but were notoriously slow and UP, at least, quickly lost interest in favour of the more easily maintained and worked simple expansion type. A beautiful model and well worth looking at and seeing a 'what if' had thinking gone in the other direction. Many thanks Bill, as usual, you have my undivided attention....
Thanks for another great video. Keep 'em coming - they are a wonderful escape.
I think it is unfortunate you have to subtitle these with disclaimers to prevent unnecessary complaints.
Thanks Kenneth. Once in a great while I get an unpleasant comment from someone having a bad day (or life); but usually they are constructive points from people who are into historically accurate modeling. The disclaimers just save everyone a little time.
Awesome video.
Excelente video!!
Excellent. Bill.
Do you guys used Digitrax or DCS at the Colorado railroad museum
Neither -- Wireless digital command control is by North Coast Engineering (NCE) with programmable decoders in each locomotive. Each locomotive consist has at least two locomotives with sound decoders and speakers.
NCE, like Digitrax, uses the standard DCC system. DCS is a proprietary system used only by MTH.
