Edward Essis-Breton - Arcane 6 : Nouvelle-Orléans

Here's my 6th composition. The New Orleans style is strangely nostalgic, festive and comforting. It's the first "real" jazz in history. Originally, it combined the suppleness of the Blues with the texture of Ragtime. Eventually, however, it incorporated influences from all over the world. The style originated in the port city of the same name in Louisiana, USA. As a meeting point for international cultures, the city's music flourished in the image of its organized chaos. On the piano, it manifests itself in a wide variety of ways: Shuffle blues, Slow blues, Jump blues, Boogie-woogie, Stride, Gospel, Dixieland, Habanera, Rumba, Swing, Funk and more. Among the techniques, the piano can be teeming with unpredictable rolls and rhythms drawn from brass bands and Latin American music. It can also be woven with sinuous melodies akin to the vibrant vocals of the blues. It's difficult to represent all this diversity in a single piece. Using a restrained approach, I've kept it simple to compose this arcane, trying to respect the general spirit of the New Orleans style.
