India had just finished an away tour of England. Sachin didn’t perform up to the mark in that series.
A few days later, Sachin was having lunch in Chennai when the waiter advised him something.
“If you have an open mind, you can develop so many things. In Chennai it was a waiter who came up to me and said ‘if you don’t mind and don’t get offended I want to tell you something.’ I said ‘go ahead.’ He said my elbow guard restricts my bat swing. And he was 100 per cent right,” said Tendulkar.
“I instantly redesigned my elbow guard. I needed to re-open it and work on it, get the fibre and cushion on either side to absorb the impact. In our country everyone from panwala to CEOs will give you advice. But one should still be open about ideas,” he continued.
In a time we get offended by our next door aunties who give us career advices, Sachin followed the advice of a modest waiter of a hotel.
I call this humility. I think you would agree.

Being from Pakistan I always admired Sachin and Dravid. Quite, humble, and doesn't show-off like modern cricketers. With a billion admirers in India and millions in Pakistan (I assure you there are millions who admired his talent), he could have received anything on a gold platter. But he just played his game the way it's suppose to be played. He spent time, energy, sweat to master the art. You don't judge a man's character by what he can do and what he has to show. Instead you judge a man's character who knows what he's capable of doing, accept defeat with humility and then turn around and recognize that he must work harder to achieve what he wants. His story about his 1st test against the best bowling attack in the World [and we are talking about the late 80's and early 90's Pakistan team] shows you how humble he is. To accept defeat and recognize that his opposition is better; and then work hard and come back and score 50 is nothing short of amazing. Of all the Indian vs Pakistan rivalry story, I've heard a lot of players talk crap about each other. Virendar Sehwag talking crap, on our side was Shoaib Akhtar's big mouth and even bigger ego; I never heard Sachin (and Dravid) say anything bad about anyone. They both just kept their mouth shut, their head down, their minds laser-focused and let their talent & skills do all the talking for them. This is by far the best compliment I can give another man.
    Lots of love from Pakistan!

    1. “Sachin Tendulkar has carried the burden of the nation for 21 years. It is time we carried him on our shoulders” - Virat Kohli after India won the 2011 World Cup
    2. “I have seen God, he bats at no. 4 for India” - Matthew Hayden
    3. I saw him playing on television and was struck by his technique, so I asked my wife to come look at him. Now I never saw myself play, but I felt that this player is playing with a style similar to mine, and she looked at him on Television and said yes, there is a similarity between the two…his compactness, technique, stroke production - it all seemed to gel! - Sir Donald Bradman
    4. “I am fortunate that I’ve to bowl at him only in the nets!” - Anil Kumble
    5. “We did not lose to a team called India. We lost to a man called Sachin” - Mark Taylor, during the test match in Chennai (1997)
    6. “India me aap Prime Minister ko ek baar katghare me khada kar sakte hain. Par Sachin Tendulkar par ungli nahi utha Sakte.” - Navjot Singh Sidhu
    7. Harder he works, the luckier he gets - Ian Chappell
    8. I’ll be going to bed having nightmares of Sachin just running down the wicket and belting me back over the head for six. He was unstoppable. I don’t think anyone, apart from Don Bradman, is in the same class as Sachin Tendulkar. He is just an amazing player - Shane Warne
    9. I think he is marvellous. I think he will fit in whatever category of Cricket that has been played or will be played, from the first ball that has ever been bowled to the last ball that’s going to be. He can play in any era and at any level. I would say he’s 99.5% perfect - Viv Richards on Sachin Tendulkar
    10. Beneath the helmet, under that unruly curly hair, inside the cranium, there is something we don’t know, something beyond scientific measure. Something that allows him to soar, to roam a territory of sport that, forget us, even those who are gifted enough to play alongside him cannot even fathom. When he goes out to bat, people switch on their television sets and switch off their lives - BBC Sports, on Sachin Tendulkar
    11. Twenty20 cricket is the dessert and you can’t survive on that. Who wants to eat only desserts? - Sachin Tendulkar on T20 cricket
    12. He is a perfectly balanced batsman and knows perfectly well when to attack and when to play defensive cricket. He has developed the ability to treat bowlers all over the world with contempt and can destroy any attack with utmost ease - Greg Chappell
    13. He has defined cricket in his fabulous, impeccable manner. He is to batting what Shane Warne is to bowling - Richie Benaud
    14. India’s fortune will depend on how many runs the little champion scores. There is no doubt Tendulkar is the real thing - Sunil Gavaskar
    15. “There are 2 kind of batsmen in the world. One Sachin Tendulkar. Two all the others” - Andy Flower
    16. “Sachin Tendulkar has often reminded me of a veteran army colonel who has many medals on his chest to show how he has conquered bowlers all over the world” - Allan Donald
    17. “On a train from Shimla to Delhi, there was a halt in one of the stations. The train stopped by for few minutes as usual. Sachin was nearing century, batting on 98. The passengers, railway officials, everyone on the train waited for Sachin to complete the century. This Genius can stop time in India!” - Peter Roebuck
    18. If I’ve to bowl to Sachin, I’ll bowl with my helmet on. He hits the ball so hard - Dennis Lillee
    19. Sachin is a genius. I’m a mere mortal - Brian Lara
    20. When you bowl at him you are not just trying to get him out, you are trying to impress him. “I want him to walk off thinking ‘that Flintoff, he’s all right isn’t he? I feel privileged to have played against him - Andrew Flintoff
    21. Don’t bowl bad balls he hits the good ones for fours - Michael Kasprowicz
    22. Why did you get out to such a silly shot? - Anjali Tendulkar wasn’t very happy with her husband’s shot selection
    23. What we need is 10 Tendulkars - Paul Strang
    24. Today, he showed the world why he is considered the best batsman around. Some of the shots he played were simply amazing. Earlier, opposing teams used to feel that Sachin’s dismissal meant they could win the game. Today, I feel that the Indian players, too, feel this way - Wasim Akram
    25. You might pitch a ball on the off stump and think you have bowled a good ball and he walks across and hits it for two behind midwicket. His bat looks so heavy but he just waves it around like it’s a toothpick. - Brett Lee

We were in South Africa to watch the world cup in 2003 and wherever we went, England supporters, Pakistani fans, Aussie fans - they would have something strong to say about every player. There would always be sledging! But never a bad word about Sachin. For him and him alone, there was always appreciation and respect. Whether from the English, or the Pakistani's or the Aussies! It was really incredible. I don't think anyone watching today's cricket can actually comprehend what it meant to us as a country, as India, when Sachin Tendulkar walked onto that pitch, or for that matter walked off it. All TV sets would actually be switched off. That kind of pressure is still unheard of. And the kind of bowlers Sachin played - all at their peak - Warne, Wasim, Waqar, Shoaib, Lee, Muthaiya, Ambrose... Endless list!
