Great video. I already glued new footplates and just reused the binding of my shammas. It's great to see someone else doing diy straps. I'm planning to try it in the future
"Temporary loss of self-respect" 😂 excellent tutorial, making the toe plugs is going to be so much easier following your method! I was doing it backwards, melting the webbing and then trying to push it into a mold.
Very nice! I've been working on my own prototype for a running/outdoor Huarache sandal. It's been a fun and rewarding project, though with a few challenges!
What a classy friend you are! Thanks for the lesson. Being Mexican American, I love how you say Huracha. I have noticed that my dependency on heeled shoes has messed up my knees and ankles. I am building myself back. Blessings to you for helping others.
If you use leather as your footbed, it is a good to remember that the rough side of leather is more abrasive resistant that the smooth side. Amazing video quality, very inspiring and I absolutely love the final look!
I've tried both, and can see reasons for both. Rough-out leather is interesting because it's more durable, but it has more friction against your skin. This has a positive effect for mimicking barefoot, but it's also harder to clean. I can see why most companies sell smooth leather sandals, but I tried convincing Josh at Shammas to try rough-out sandals. We'll see.
Great process, some of which will be super helpful to me when I need a replacement for mine. I sort of made mine, but not much craft involved: I used a sole from a Xero Shoes huarache kit and, because the lace from that kept breaking, a strap bought from Earth Runners, which is also a lot more comfortable and secure than the Xero lace. Very very easy to fit the strap to the sole using narrow headed pliers. The advantage for me was that the Xero sole comes wide, allowing most people to trim it, but I could leave it as is. I have wide feet and no existing sandals I know of are anywhere near wide enough. I don't think I need glued on leather and I definitely don't need foam, but good to know I can just get some rubber with a grip on one side and cut to size next time, as the Xero Shoe sellers have stopped selling the kit sandals here in the UK.
I'll try to make a pair for next summer. I've been going barefoot for a while and I thought of switching the foam with another layer of leather and add some ears to it. Basically when you sandwich the 3 layers to make the sole, the middle one has ears to which you can attach the straps to and make them even safer from tearing due to being possibly dragged across the ground.
this a tremendous video!! the tutorial s well thought out and detailed enough that i'm doin this whenever my sole material shows up. many many thank yous!!
Muchísimas gracias por mostrar su hechura paso a paso, me gustaron mucho. Es admirable cómo los rarámuris/tarahumaras recorren enormes distancias corriendo con este tipo de sandalias, es un modelo más que probado. Saludos desde México.
I wonder if you could also make the sole material by glueing together a larger sheet and then cutting out these material sandwiches in the shape you want. That way you, you may even be able to create multiple soles in a go for later replacements. I'm just thinking about how Shamma makes their sandals-essentially cutting or punching the shape out of a sheet.
Love your video with all the discriptions, made a few leather sandals myself and love them - now I want to make a sandal in your style but I can not find the sideposts pdf template that you mentioned. Is there such a template and where can I find it - would be awesome to know before I start cutting the leather :) THX
I really wish I would have listened to you more about the importance of wearing huaraches that fit the shape of one's individual foot before running a trail half-marathon in some Shamma Mountain Goats. While a great sandal, because they were likely a half size too big and not customized, I tripped twice on rocks due to catching the excess front end material (I call this the "diving board") because my brain was confusing my toes with where my foot ended. After taking a box cutter to the soles, they're now some of my favorite trail running shoes. I'll probably make a video about the process soon. Great stuff, Peter!
Yeah every change you make should be done with care. When I can, I like to try to make less than 20% change every week. One week 20% new shoes, the next week 40%, etc. Trimming Huaraches around your foot also really helps limit the tripping, but it increases how much skin is exposed.
Bro! I wish there was a master like you in my town. Those shoes pretty much ain't sold in my country, and ordering from abroad will like double the price.
I tried this DIY huarache sandals on my own haha, a pretty funny project, but Idk if I'm using the wrong nylon adjustors, but the one piece that is used to tie the leather strap and the nylon really hurt my skin, and if I try to adjust it to make more comfortable, the sandal feel loose, so I tink I am not using a good adjustor.... also I made ton of mistakes that I will fix in a future 😅.... great video! and great project.

After making them I definitely believe companies making sandals aren't charging more than I'd have to for a pair of sandals. Its all about scale, and not enough people are buying minimalist footwear. I don't have a blog, but the PDF of the side post is coming, and your foot is the pattern!

I think you have to cut into the rubber, I've had sandals work ok with the rubber fully cut out, and the plug being held by one layer of leather. But you can also just cut part way into the rubber
Go to Xero Shoes for a hole punch-xeroshoes.com/shop/extras/hole-punch/ and to create a plug instructions from Xero Shoes ruclips.net/video/mw6F3rMrj50/видео.html
Hi. Great video. Just a question: what's holding the plug on the sole when the straps are inserted? Is it the Eva foam plus the leather? Thanks. Will try this out.
Hey Peter - thanks for this great video. Can you maybe tell me what kind/brand of Nylon Webbing you are using? The one I got is way to hard and hurts between the toes ...
I purchased it from MEC in Canada. It's very light, 5/8 inch webbing. I have tried lots of different webbings though, you just have to find something that works. Curious what your sandals looked like, did you make your own? I'd love to share your sandals in a future video if you've been making them yourself.
How do you like leather footbed compared to other options? Thinking of making some. My concerns are: will get dirtier/harder to clean compared to synthetic, and slippery when wet. Are these valid?
Yes great question and I think leather is not waterproof and can take effort to maintain? Plus some people prefer vegan. I wonder if vegan leather could work, but also if there's some other option that's comfy but waterproof. Also wondering what colors webbing comes in and where to source it. Does rubber come in colors other than black too?
I saw you mention sourcing Ultragrip in the comments. I don’t think you can. If I read the Shamma site correctly Toughtek specifically developed that footbed for Shamma. Toughtek does have some other non slip fabrics similar, however I’m not sure how well they would work. I’ve even looked for the manufacturer for Monkey grip (Luna) and haven’t been able to find a source for that either. Additionally where did you get the EVA. I’m a 6-9mm sandal runner myself and I’ve been able to find the 5mm new flex but having a hard time sourcing a “midsole”.
Looks awesome! Where do you buying the rubber sheets? I've ben searching and searching I can only find the 30cm long sheets, my feet are 31cm so I need a bit more 😅
I think you don't need to sand off the glue that got on the leather. You should be able to wipe it off with a rubber cement type of eraser - the same material that's used to remove rubber cement, and also to clean sanding belts.
What is the purpose of having the leather straps only on the inside of the huaraches? When I've worn sandals, the outside straps have grinded against the ground and worn out. is there any merit to putting leather straps, or the x shaped attachment onto the outside rather than just inside? Great video btw. Love the energy that you bring to showing people how to do something so awesome! You clearly put a lot of effort into this video, and these shoes :)
The leather attachment is more for supporting the strap around your ankle. I find that the sole of my sandals wears faster than my straps on the ground. Shamma sandals offers supportive posts on both sides now, but the design I have in my video is like an older shammas design. It's all about how many steps you're willing to do in the process, and how hard you find it is to keep the straps around your feet. I've had a fine time in sandals with no supportive straps, just tension.
@@petertardigrade4485 How thick. I have 5mm Vibram Newflex sheet. I want to add a foot bed that's around 4mm or less. Do have any other foot bed recommendations?
@@georgecataulin907 It comes in 1 to 24 oz. Use 16+ I would say. Other foot bed materials: you could try finding a source for the ultragrip product Shammas uses? I dunno, I found leather to be quite adequate, and although it is an animal product, it is a waste product from the beef industry and would otherwise go to waste. I don't have much guilt from using and producing leather products.
Man those are some awesome sandals. I wish you could make me a pair of those. I have big very very extremely wide feet sz15 6 EEEEEE wide with very chubby fat wide toes that are equally straight across making my foot very very wide at 6 1/2 inches wide from my big toe to my lil toe. My foot outgrew shoes, socks, & boots when i was 18 years old & flip flops is the only footwear that will barely & i mean barely fit me because my toes are wider than the flip flops straps. With my toes being straight across & very fat & wide having only the straps that goes in between the toes would make it a lot easier for me to slide my foot into a sandals like this. I have to do a lot things barefooted 👣 driving my car barefooted 👣because of my foot being too wide. My foot is touching the gas & the brake pedal at the same time because of my toes being to wide & being straight across. I never thought with me being a chubby fat dude I would had to deal with having very extremely wide feet with very chubby fat wide toes that are equally straight across. Good video I really enjoy watching it. thank you for sharing.
You could probably add an extra layer of leather towards the heel(skive the transition to avoid a bump) I wouldn't do much more than one extra layer of leather on this style of sandal due to how it is supposed to conform to your foot.
At the very least you have to let it lose its tackiness. Check out other cobbler videos to learn more, like from Bedo's Leatherworks. That said, before I started using my heat gun, I had problems with glue adhesion, where layers would come apart and stay gummy well after I finished the sandal. So, definitely a recommended step.
It's specifically designed to have metal wires aimed against the direction you pull, so it makes many deep grooves in any soft material, like leather or rubber. A wire brush might do the same thing, but make sure you're making lots of deep scratches.
I saw at the end of the video you are walking heel toe isnt it suppose to be forefoot first meaning you land on the outer ball of your foot then your heel slowly touches the ground
Forefoot first is only for running, and a mid foot strike is actually fine for running so long as you aren't impacting the ground too hard. These types of shoes are painful to incorrectly run or walk in so the wearer will naturally learn what does and doesn't work.
This is literally the first DIY/how to video I’ve seen on RUclips where I actually enjoyed the background music.

9:30 “enbiggen” 😂
Why did you choose to put the y-post on the inside of the foot, and not the outside. Also, why use a post at all? Why not two?
I would throw dollars at you to make me a pair!
Do I really need to let the contact cement dry and reheat it? Can I just apply the contact cement then attach the bottom and top soles?
At the very least you have to let it lose its tackiness. Check out other cobbler videos to learn more, like from Bedo's Leatherworks.
That said, before I started using my heat gun, I had problems with glue adhesion, where layers would come apart and stay gummy well after I finished the sandal. So, definitely a recommended step.
@@petertardigrade4485 Thanks again. I'll be ordering a heat gun now.
Is the leather rougher a wire brush?
It's specifically designed to have metal wires aimed against the direction you pull, so it makes many deep grooves in any soft material, like leather or rubber.
A wire brush might do the same thing, but make sure you're making lots of deep scratches.
Thanks for getting back with me. I went ahead and ordered a leather rougher after you replied to my question.
Can I just buy a pair from you??
I definitely recommend looking up Shamma sandals
