Larry worked during his lunch hour when he was in school. Worked at the grocery store and put up hay in the summer. They lived on 50 dollars a week. Larry grew up poor. In comparison to today's players Larry got paid very little. It was great for the time. Larry built his mother a house and was building her a driveway when he hurt his back in 1985. We ❤Larry for all he gave us as fans. We felt valued that he played so hard for us and his team.
Jordan and Bird's McDonald's commercials are hilarious. There are whole videos you can react to about that. Jordan would only do the commercials if Bird did it with him because Larry was the only one he considered his equal in shooting.
Joe Bird as a US Marine fought and served during the Korean War... Marines had out dated equipment left over from WW2 and under dressed during the very cold days of battle... Korean War was very brutal and never really talked about... Joe Bird suffered from PTSD at the time no help was available for soldiers for the mental hell they all had to burden... Marines are tough as nails that mentality was passed to Larry from his father... WW2 and Korean veterans were looked at as real life heros, greatest generation to ever live... Larry Bird is a very private person and has not often enjoyed doing interviews. When asked why, he said that he didn't mind when he was asked about basketball, but didn't like it when people tried to find out things about his personal life and family. Maybe his fathers death in 1975 may have something to do with that. He also lost one of his grandmothers in 1976. The war had a great deal to do with his dad's problems. He developed PTSD, which wasn't really addressed much if at all then. Many people also don't know that Larry Bird lost his mother rather early. She was 66 when she died of ALS, Lou Gehrig’s disease. He definitely hasn't had an easy life. He worked hard to become good at basketball, spending hours with a friend practicing what their high school coach had asked them to practice. From what I have read, his first coach with the Celtics was Bill Fitch. Fitch by all accounts was a no nonsense person who made the team really work and it paid off. Larry had Coach Fitch up on the stage with him when he was inducted into the Hall of Fame. Another thing I found on Wikipedia is that "He [Bird] was also called Kodak by his first NBA coach, Bill Fitch, because Bird could form pictures in his head of the plays on the basketball court." A fun fact: Larry Bird has made a hole in one in golf.
This story I know. As a father I know that pain of trying to provide for my family. Asa son, I know how that resentment can eat you up. Larry is a unique dude, it doesn’t get more real or authentic than him. He was born to do what he done, but his experiences just made him all the greater.
I'm an older white woman now .. and had to work hard raising 5 children 2 boys of my own and 3 steps.. . I want young men like you to realize that it's not a color thing.. When you have children you take out all the stops to provide.. no matter your color of skin or nationality. We all love our children and our families. Hurts my heart to hear what Joe Bird did to his family... I've lived it myself with my Brother in law and my husband.
Thanks for exploring this part of Larry Legend's story. There were 3 children under 18 at the time of Joe's death. Larry had turned 18 three months earlier. It was after his time at IU. He was recruited and went to ISU the next Fall. Yeah. In my personal opinion, the source video has a lot of poor pairing of story and visuals.
Larry shares the G.O.A.T. throne with Michael in my opinion....hard to compare because their games and approach to it were soooo different. But Larry is a G.O.A.T. to me for more than just his bball skills and IQ etc.....he is a man with very strong values and principles......the attitude and work ethic learned his father and Larry Joe never did anything half heartedly. He put his all into anything worth doing. He was also one tough mofo. During his career he would be involved in bar fights regularly and he would not back down from anyone and he would not endure dirty players like Laimbeer trying to slide his foot under Larrys as he was shooting a jumper, so that Larrys foot would come down awkwardly on Laimbeers and tie him up hoping twist or sprain Birds ankle, or worse. That POS Bill Laimbeer......was the most intolerable of any bball player before or since. He was openly out to cause real injuries like a coward who can't beat the opponent otherwise. anyway sorry got a bit derailed there....
Believe It Are Not But Magic's Family & Many Other's Had More Then Bird Did Growing Up. Bird Use To Work At A Very Young Age (it would be against the law now) During His Hour For Lunch. He Worked Doing After School At A Store & On Weekends. He Always Tried To Find A Job In Town & Put Up Hey In The Summer Times. And Like I Said He Started Doing This In Grade School. Larry Said: "If You Needed Money You Had To Work & Get It On Your Own". And In Turn Would Give Some If Not All To The His Father/Mother To Help Out As Much As He Could. Most Of The People In French Lick All Did This. But It Really Wasn't A Big Deal, It Was Just Life To Him.
The Only Thing This Dude Got Wrong In This Video; No, He Wasn't Behind Child Payments For All 6 Kids. Bird Was #4 And He Was 19 When His Dad Killed Himself. So There Were Only 2 Young Enough To Get Child Support. Child Support Stops When A Child Turns 18, At Least That's The Way It Worked Back Then.
JUST A QUESTION. WHERE DID YOU LEARN TO SPEAK ENGLISH. AND THAT IS A QUESTION FOR A LOT OF YOUNG BLACK PEOPLE. IT'S JUST A QUESTION. PLEASE TRY TO NOT LOSE CONTROL OF YOURSELF. THANK YOU.

oh wow i appreciate you for this
Joe Bird also fought the demons that remained with him from the war.

Love hearing Johnny Most
I knew Larry’s father had killed himself but I didn’t know how close his death was to Larry’s great success.
i was shocked too

If you haven’t reacted yet. Watch the “Courtship of Rivals”

He didn't mention that Larry and his dad were best friends.
Larry changed the NBA for the better.
yes he did!

His dad died before he signed with the Celtics did he not
Yes, his father died in 1975 and Larry hadn't yet started his college career at Indiana State. He was there from 1976 to 1979.

Chills like a mug? Doesn't help... English is really easy...
This isn't the whole story. His dad suffered from PTSD bad. He spent a lot of his paychecks staying drunk. Putting a further strain on the family.
oh wow fr
