The Sammy B also exhausted her 5 inch armor piercing shells, then exhausted her high explosive, then exhausted her anti aircraft shell, then resorted to star shells ...
The story of Taffy 3 always makes me think of the saying: Its not the size of the dog in the fight, but the size of the fight in the dog. Also you should look into the story of hellcat pilot that ran out of ammo, manually cranked down his landing gear and bludgeoned a Betty bomber into the sea.
She may have only been a destroyer escort but she had the spirit of a battleship. The running gunfights she had with the heavy cruisers is the stuff of legend. The Sammy B lived on in the destroyer of its name that was the cause of Operation Praying Mantis, having practically had her back broken by a mine. It was saved by the insane efforts of the crew and after a year of repairs would re-enter service
The 2nd Sammy B FFG-58 has already been scrapped in 2022. From coxwain to DE-413 and FFG-58 they fought hard protecting the USMC. Sammy B is a name more then worthy of a USN/USMC ship. There are several petitions to name a LX(R) who are going in production in 2025 .
@@masterskrain2630 Honestly I don't care about the japanese ships. Their arrogance was their downfall in the Pacific Theater. They sorely underestimated the US Navy!!
Honestly, all things considered, with the water, depth, and landing damage, Sammy B is in _beautiful_ condition in my eyes, I mean, the camo pattern on her is as distinct as ever, the Draft markings on her bow, I think that dual-mount AA gun's ammo still has visible colours on it too! Sammy B and Johnston deserve all the respect they get, along with their crews, and the others of TAFFY 3
John C. Butler class DE were slightly larger than Wickes and Clemson class DDs ("four-pipers") but optimized for anti-submarine work rather than surface or all uses work. DEs had fewer guns, fewer torpedoes, and ~10 knots slower (but faster than surfaced submarines).
USN 5"/38 guns were dual purpose, useful for anti-surface or for AA. Their rate of fire was 15-20 rounds per minute, so they could make ships' superstructure unpleasant places to be.
when hes tells you sammy b was almost out of ammo/shell he means it fire sammy b used all of it AP shell then HE then AA and finally star shells aka signal flares shell.
Contrary to popular belief, the Johnston and Sammy B we're not sunk by Japanese ordnance. The cumulative weight of those giant brass balls on board finally drug them down.. These men truly were America's greatest generation.
Actually, the 18" turrets of the Yamato each weighed more then the Fletcher class U.S.S. Johnston, and the Yamato itself displaced more then ALL of the ships of Taffy 3 COMBINED.
I saw the Sammy B FFG 58 in her last months in service in 2015 at naval station Norfolk just the next pier over from my ship USS Anzio CG68. before she was decommissioned some of our crew met with some of their crew and we, Strategically Transferred Equipment to Alternate Locations before big Navy could throw it in storage forever. I hope they give that name to an Arlie Burke and not one of those useless littoral class soda cans or a resupply ship, names like that belong on fighting ships.
I've heard a lot of people pushing for a Constellation-class FFG. Which is probably the most appropriate ship to get the name, because Sammy B. was always the little one.
I served in the US Navy, when I read these stories it makes me so proud! These men were true heroes, and their Captain was a hell of a man! The Japanese highly underestimated the tenacity and ferocity of the US Navy!
Thank you for your service in the US Navy!! ❤🙏🇺🇸 My cousin also served in the US Navy as a pilot on the USS Lake Champlain.. one of the many Air Craft Carriers he would serve aboard!! The men who fought in WW2 are Forever known as the Greatest Generation To Have Ever Walked The Earth!! 🙏❤🇺🇸 God Bless Them All!!
The Johnston's torpedoes blew off the bow of the heavy cruiser Kumano. Sammy B's torpedoes did take off the stern of the heavy cruiser Chokai. Her (frankly amazing) gun duel was with the heavy cruiser Chikuma.
The FORD class supercarrier being built after JFK and ENTERPRISE should have been named after TAFFY 3 or other unit which suppressed the Japanese task force intent on destroying the landings on Leyte Island. Instead for DEI purposes this fourth carrier of the FORD class was named in honor of a black mess attendant. There were a lot of CMOH awarded on December 7th and during the Pacific War, but no carriers have been named for anyone who just received the Navy Cross. This naming is a sacrilege and an affront to true heroes.
Let's look at some of the people who have had carriers named for them. Stennis was a Senator that opposed all civil rights and openly supported segregation in the USA. At least Washington Lincoln Truman Bush Reagan Ike and Roosevelt all were presidents with all but Reagan being in the service. Lincoln was in the Illinois state milita during the Blackhawk war. Nimitz cic of the Pacific Stennis and Vinson were southern Democrats that literally voted for segregation in the USA as long as possible politically.
A salute to this ship and the men who served and died on her.
The Sammy B also exhausted her 5 inch armor piercing shells, then exhausted her high explosive, then exhausted her anti aircraft shell, then resorted to star shells ...
Every ship in Taffy 3 needs to have its classification upgraded to CVE-BB, DD-BB, and DE-BB. The BB addendum standing for Big Balls.
BD beyond duty would also fit

Wildcat, I think, IIR that fight correctly.
And then ther was the last stand of USS Borie...We're throwing stuff at you!
That's some fucking incredible shit! I've never heard of that!
Before ww2; the world thought the Americans were weak and not willing to fight. Then they met men like these and realized too late their mistake.
As a man who honours those who lay down their lives so we can live freely, I salute these men who fought valiantly. We will remember them
Rip seaman first class jack yusen he never got to see his ship again
One of my favourite ships of World War 2, right up there with Enterprise and Warspite.
What a ship, crewed by the best. Rip Sammy B and her crew

You're talking about the time the Enterprise and it's friends took out most of Iran's navy, right?
It was very.... proportional
She and her crew fought all the way to the end. I salute all her brave crew.
I Salute these bravest of sailors.L.Roberts
Thank you for making this and recognizing my Great Uncle Paul and his heroism along with the rest of the Sammy B crew.
10 out of 10 for this video
Her Perry Class namesake was also a great hero ship that survived a strike with an Iraqi mine in the 80's.
A destroyer escort with the spirit of Yamato! Also, she's the deepest laying wreck in the world currantly.
Interesting note: Drachinifel's video on the battle of Samar notes that the Yamato alone displaced MORE then ALL of the ships of Taffy 3 COMBINED.
Also History Channel's Dogfights makes note of that.
Hell one of Yamatos turrets weighs more than the Sammy B

A video about the sinking of HMS Glorious. Would be a good subject.😊
My Father Kenneth McLaughlin WT/3 served on CVE-3 USS Gambier Bay and survived the sinking but passed in 1969 when I was 3 years old.
I still wonder how the DDs and DEs of Taffy 3 have not sank under the weight if the crew's steel balls.
Could I suggest a video on the USS New Orleans. And how it kept sailing after completely lossing its bow.
The book, little ship, big war, tells of this battle.
The destroyer escort that fought like a battle ship
The valor of our GREATEST GENERATION will never be equaled. And I'm a retired GWOT Marine saying that.
A Legend. ❤❤❤❤❤❤
the Japanese absolutely admired the warriors of Taffy 3. from the survivors of the Johnston, the Admiral on Yamato saluted them as he passed them!
It was the captain and crew of the destroyer _Yukikaze._
@The_Fat_Controller. ok thanks for the clarification
And yet somehow Sabaton hasn't done a song about this ship.... and I suggested it to them.

They are all around us, and they rise when the circumstances call.
Make a video about the Greek armored cruiser Georgios Averof.
One cannot glorify one ship without taking away from another involved in the same battle..........
