Alpha Brass 6 Creedmoor Initial Test!

  • So, I figured since I just cleaned my barrel pretty well, I should use this time to start my testing on this Alpha brass. Here is my first testing with the Alpha Munitions Brass in 6 Creedmoor.
    I loaded up a few and did an initial test with 1 charge giving some great numbers for a 5 round group. I loaded up more of that charge and a higher charge to test further.
    I'll admit, my second test was not as awesome as the first one. But, for doing what I need it should still be plenty good for my match. I've decided since my time is rather limited before my last match, I am going to run this and see what happens. Maybe now if I have a bad score, I can blame it on fire forming this brass during the match instead of me just doing bad, lol.
    I am getting some good groups with this, but I want to get a little more speed and see if another charge will have more consistency. I will be crunched on time, so I am going to run with the charge I have here in the match. If I had another day or two to test more, I might be able to find my final load. I think a .5 MOA group size should be plenty good for PRS though. I can admit that my rifle can still shoot better than me, so let's see how this goes!
    Looking forward to this last match and then getting into more testing with this after. I hope to do well this match and if this better quality brass can help me do that, then I will take any help I can find!!
    Thanks for watching! I hope you have a great rest of your day and an awesome weekend!!

    Well, some initial tests on my Alpha brass. I think it's doing well enough to run it for my match this Sunday. I am working now getting enough loaded up for the whole match. If I have time, I will load up some of my Lapua load that has been working well as well. Best to have a back up just in case something goes haywire. I think my misses are going to come down to me and my wind reading and stability though. Pretty sure this is going to do it's job!
    Stay tuned, more cool things coming in the next weeks. I will show you all soon!!
    Have a great weekend!!

      I notice in your video you did not use a mandrel after resizing I would recommend you use a expander mandrel 2 thousands below bullet diameter and take out the expander ball in your full length sizing die this will most likely help your sd and es. Have a safe weekend too my friend

      @kyley808 That is my next die type to test out. I've been having very consistent necks with full length bushing die, but I think adding a mandrel step will bump up the consistency just a bit. Gonna chat with Erik Cortina about his mandrel die, and look at the Short Action Customs. Maybe Area419 die, but I think you have to use that larger die thread size of press. Got a few options to narrow down, but you are correct that I need to add that to my bench soon!!

    Hey Chad! Yet again here you are Inspector Gadget. That's a cool barrel fan! Where do you find this stuff!?! Crazy man crazy. Thanks for sharing awesome stuff! Keep it up.

    • @ChadKelly7
      @ChadKelly7  2 месяца назад

      @tims6212 🤣🤣 You know, I actually got that in July last year and this was the first time I actually used it 😂 It's been in my bag every range trip and match, but this was the first time I was sitting waiting for the barrel to cool. Remembered I had that and popped it in. Cooled down a little faster. It was high 90s and humid that day, so any help was good!! Usually enough time between stages that barrel cools down on its own. This is made by the same company that makes the Magneto Speed chrono. That thing is was too complicated of a chrono for me to bother with compared to my Garmin Xero.
      But, the RifleKuhl is neat. Small and while it is in, it acts like a chamber flag as well!! Just found my order. I got this July 13th. I collect a lot of things and then only use them when needed.
      I live by the "better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it" mantra 🤣
      I just got another cool gadget also!! MDT stage timer. I will show that off in a video after I get thru this match. Neat, small rifle mounted timer. I just got it set up to alert me at different times as the stage time counts down, it will alert me 5 times. And, I have a new rifle case ordered. Hoped to have it for this match, but tracking shows it won't be here until Tuesday 😢 I am bummed. O well, another thing to show off in future video. That one will be cool!!!
      Ok, time to get back to loading my ammo before I hit the shower and get ready for work today!
      Thank you for coming by again, Tim!! My nickname from you might end up being Gizmo if I keep showing off cool gadgets as I make vids🤣 Have a great weekend, sir!!!

    Chad I get loose primer pockets first before crack necks. You can get a primer pocket gauge so you don't get primers falling out

    • @ChadKelly7
      @ChadKelly7  2 месяца назад

      @kyley808 Good point! I do have a gauge. One reason I want to get this Alpha brass set up well for my rifle. It's supposed to have improvements in the head and primer pockets that allow it to withstand higher pressure, which means at standard pressure it should hold it's pockets much better than others. I will try and keep track of how many loadings and see how long they last before pockets or necks start showing wear!
      Good idea and I would probably have forgot to make notes of that. I have the initial measurements, so I can check after a few and see how they are doing.
      Thanks for stopping by! I hope you have a great weekend, Kyle!

    I think your plan to stick with the lower speed but consisted is the right way to go. As for the misses in the wind... was it maybe your Kestrel acting up again or do you think it was behaving itself?

    • @ChadKelly7
      @ChadKelly7  2 месяца назад +1

      @DocJustinT I am glad to hear that. I am just over 40 of the 85 Alpha I am loading up. If I have time, gonna try and load up at least 80 of the Lapua load also. Just to have something else.
      I think it was me. Kestrel was good on directions after a calibration. That is usually the error. And pretty sure Kestrel is correct but my binos were the problem with direction last time. Sending them to Vortex after this match to get checked out.
      There was a 2 to 4 mph 11 o'clock wind. I think it layed as I shot and I zipped off left edge. Held right edge and got hit. At 745, that target is .4 or .6 MIL wide. Tall, but quite narrow. Also, I keep forgetting that the last 160 yards are thru trees, so it cuts all wind. What I feel at the gun is nothing like what it's like at the target. Open field match Sunday, so that won't be something to worry about.
      I think all my mistakes at the match are going to be on me. But, if I do terrible I am totally gonna blame the ammo making me miss 🤣🤣
      Found out the new rifle case is not here till Tuesday, so won't have to repack everything before. Just gotta load ammo and learn the timer functions.
      If I could get a miracle extra day to practice/test, I would be happy. But, that is gonna have to wait for after the match!
      Fingers crossed. Gonna do my best!!
      Have a great weekend, Justin!

    Speed is not as important as group size.

    • @ChadKelly7
      @ChadKelly7  Месяц назад

      @radicallymessy Yes, I had good luck at the match even out to 1050. I am still planning to test a few more charges, just to see if a better node is there, but if not I know I found a good one that works for what I need. But, I ran out of time to test as much as I wanted before the last match. Hopefully this weekend or next will be my final powder testing for this brass.
