For this performance, Jakob have said in an interview that he didn't know that there were cameras, originally it was a radio broadcast without visual support. He was to sing in the middle of summer in the region of Aix-en-Provence in France. That's why he sings in everyday clothes and that the pianist plays piano in flip flops.

You need to hear more counter-tenors and (more rare) male sopranos - e.g. Iestyn Davies, Andreas Scholl, Valer Sabadus, Max Cencic, Bejun Mehta etc etc (I've deliberately picked a variety of different styles and approaches).
I would suggest listening to Philippe Jarrousky. His Vivaldi renditions are phenomenal, amongst others.

The story behind this performance is very interesting. The boys were in a radio interview (and dressed for radio) when they were asked to fill in for another musician at this lunchtime concert in Aix en Provence in France. There was no time to change so they did this totally off the cuff. It shows what consummate professionals they really are

Probably the nicest countertenor voice I’ve ever heard. Nothing quite like that particular sound. It’s kind of uncanny, all the richness and darkness of a male voice but in this piercing, lyrical range.

I'm a nurse and I lost a patient that night, I was a wreck and just ready to go home and cry myself to sleep. Yeah, I’m interested to know about the relationship between the player and page turner. She’s like right in there with him. Would she be a peer? A teacher? A trainee? I guess it’s hard to remember all the notes but I’d find it hard to sit ‘in the pocket’ with someone that in the space with me that isn’t also playing.
Orlińsky is arguably the best young countertenor in the world. This off-the-cuff performance is just sublime

He had the audience completely wrapped around his finger - when I was leaving the recital hall I heard an older lady say she'd never heard that particular hall go that crazy before. Definitely go see him if you ever have the chance! Fair warning though: his final encore was so beautiful that it made me super emotional, so before leaving I genuinely had to lock myself in the bathroom to have a little cry :')

Actually!!! It is angelic, funnily enough. Countertenors (or basically boys who can sing like girls) are said to have the voice of angels because of how androgynous it is. They’ve been sacred since the 16th century. So yeah there’s your fun fact :)
Can we just take a moment to appreciate the pianist as well? He played with so much emotion and complemented the singer perfectly in the way the dynamics change through the piece. Especially impressive given that both of them pulled this together so last minute.

You would love him for a week then you would file a complaint. It takes thousands of hours of practice to get good at something, you just enjoyed the 5 minutes of perfection that came out of it, and avoided all the long and excruciating process.

definitely not just a natural gift though. Talent can only get you so far, but to reach this level there was 100% a lot of time and effort into perfecting his technique.

According to another classical professional singer, he's actually flawed in technique or rather training. Even though the quality of the singing is top notch, you couldn't expect him to sing a 3h Opera without his voice failing eventually.
@@Raaschid opera singers have this misconception where if it's not opera, it's incorrect. Look at opera today, they are all incorrect. Regardless, this guy is a master baroque singer. Why would he use opera technique to sing three hours when he is a baroque singer?
Such a rare gift ---- His breath control incredible ----- The notes simply flow from him so naturally. A powerful voice but he knows how to restrain that power and when to use it for maximum impact.

2:15 The way he goes higher db, his voice is so smooth there's no tearing, it's almost as if you're just sliding a volume bar in a computer, which still isn't perfect enough to replicate this.

@@PaperVisage I'm not completely sure myself (being a layman also), but if I had to take a crack at it, they are referring to the audio itself. So they are complementing both the singer, as well as the recording hardware. When you record really high decibel sounds, they can "tear" meaning lose quality and have random pops and scratchiness. Even a small amount of audio tearing can exacerbate fluctuations in the singers voice too.

I think it may be that there is no break in how the vocal cords "slide up" into a high range without having to change to a falsetto or something. This a wild guess on my part, and I don't know this stuff, but I am very sensitive to the differences in how voices move through various ranges. The gift of these vocal cords and probably his care for them has produced this beautiful sound.

With two music performance degrees, I strongly agree with you. The pianist is flawless. I’d love to hear his piano solo work where he truly gets to shine. But this young vocalist sets a gold bar standard for sure! And he himself is classically beautiful as well! If they were doing a major concert in an ancient venue with authentic acoustics, it’d be worth booking the tickets and hotel for a trip across the pond to experience them in person. The greatest electronic sound technology in the world just can’t replicate those sounds in those spaces. These young men are rare gems!

Well, yeah, it was an elitist thing that couldn't be passed onto their snotty kids. Tickets should be more accessible if they want regular people who are actually or could be enthusiastic about the genre.
It isn't opera that's struggling, it's us.
And without music like this our struggle is meaningless.
Opera companies are running the art into the ground because of terrible management. I myself am a young opera singer, the industry's worse for wear right now. The one thing I'll give the musical theater companies credit for is the fact it runs in a way that's much better for the singers than opera companies.

It's also because Opera is up against what I call "Kleenex music" or "Mc Music". The great dumbing down is certainly a part of this.
Fewer and fewer people even read good books anymore, or even know what a good book is. Just 100 years ago the most popular musical genres were classical and jazz. How we have fallen. Many college educated young people will refer to this kind of music as that of dead white males. But I prefer it this way. Small and exclusive, made by and for those who truly appreciate it. Like a Michelin star restaurant. Opera just might be uncorruptible, because so few can master that level of singing.

What an absolutely gorgeous countertenor voice. It might sound a little weird but I also really kind of like the breaths that he puts in. I'm a classically trained mezzo soprano with asthma, and one of the biggest things I've struggled with my whole life has been really long melismas and sustained notes, because I often just can't get enough air and breath support to make it all the way through. I've always been self conscious about it, and it was one of the most consistent notes I got in college. But honestly? This makes me feel a lot less self conscious about it. On more than one occasion I've had to add in breaths where they weren't written, and it always kind of felt like cheating in a way. But here he allows himself the time he needs to breathe, and it sounds completely relaxed, natural, and absolutely stunning.
I'm the same as you: a classically trained mezzo with asthma! I wasn't diagnosed with asthma until my 2nd year of college (when I suffered a severe, prolonged asthma attack).
I took one lesson with a "top-tier" voice teacher during my 1st year of college (before I was diagnosed). At one point she asked me, "Do you have asthma? No? Then stop inhaling so noisily." It took all my composure not to burst into tears. Turns out I DID have asthma...but she was so unkind about something I had no control over.

Sadly there are really talented people out there who make very cruel teachers, and even if they are a "top" instructor, it means very little if they break their students' confidence and belittle them instead of working together with them where they're at. I hope you were able to continue your studies with a kinder teacher - thankfully I've had incredible luck in that area. Finding the right instructor who sort of "speaks your language" makes a WORLD of difference.

@@petemartell677 Countertenors are usually baritone singers (rarely tenor, never bass) who practiced their falsetto until it developed into a real voice. They also sometimes use a modal voice for lower notes. The reason they are so rare is that there's a big stigma of sounding like a woman and it's extremely difficult to learn this.

Spent 6 years in classical voice programs and competition before I took a big step back from performing due to illness. Since then my relationship with singing has been bittersweet and I have to say this is the first classical voice performance I have been really excited by in a long time. The big wide eyed, goose-skin, presentness. Triggered my urge to listen as a musician and maybe eventually I’ll perform again.
Edit: the fact that this was a spontaneous performance is immensely impressive given the rigor and hard physical work it takes to do this.
I hope you have the music in your life, whether or not you decide to perform again. Good luck 🍀

He is using Mixed voice. The note is resonating in His chest, and his head. That is why He the note at 2:15 sounds so full. Mixed resonance takes awhile to truly master, and sounds breathtakingly beautiful.

I saw him in concert a few weeks ago, and it was INCREDIBLE. The singing, of course, but also the dancing.
Jakub is amazing, this was his first performance I listened to and I immediately fell in love with his voice. If you don't know him: he's a polish countertenor and a break dancer, strange combo but it fits him perfectly. A great artist! About their informal dress, they were not supposed to play on stage that evening that's why they're wearing slippers and shorts.

It’s great that musically trained people listen to music like this glorious performance, but so sad that all they hear are the “errors” and only want to show how clever they are and don’t seem to want to praise the beauty of the performance . Maybe it was a class exercise to spot the difference, but in any case I hope that people with musical knowledge allow themselves to enjoy the music and not just to analyse it to death.
When you're learning performance it's so hard to just sit and enjoy the music when you're beaten on the head with all the technicalities of it. As much as I enjoyed singing and learning to play an instrument I didnt like being constantly reminded of my inferiority. I took a private lessons teacher that wouldn't let me get past a single set of notes without playing it almost exactly to their standards. It's great for a learning but doesn't make it fun to practice and experiment with the music.
I get the impression that a lot of classically-trained musicians end up hating music and other musicians.
...unfair ,a listener merely noted the singer sang the melody line lower....Frank Sinatra did that with some Hoagy Carmichael songs .....lower and slower.....added to the musicality of performance.
Vivaldi picked a key , these singers sang another set of notes that is ,another key.
Each "key " has its own colour.
@john blaine As someone who started out being classically trained, this comment resonated with me. When I was young and learning, I had natural ability (talent) that showed an affinity for music, so my parents had me in voice and violin performances early. At first, it was fun learning terms and how to recreate a piece with my voice or violin, getting praised for the final performance. However, despite having natural ability that seemed to take to even difficult music easily, there were so many course corrections done along the way for every single song (not just for myself, but for the group when playing with an orchestra or singing in a chorus) that it really did become almost like a burden to be around music. I had to take a break from it because I LOVED music and wanted to love it again. Unfortunately, a lot of people (several who I personally know) who continue with the rigors of classical training end up moving into the land of Hubris where their accomplished pieces, years of work with this or that maestro or maestra, and library of technical knowledge become their whole identity, which they have to share with EVERYONE whether they ask for it or not.
The best thing I did to break away from that so I could actually enjoy music again was join a church choir where the conductor pointed out that I was technically correct when I sang, but there was no character, no true individuality to my performance. He taught me how to feel the music, be moved by it, and then put myself into it. I had never had that kind of encouragement before and it was life changing. Now, I can actually share something I love with my children in a way that fosters their love for it, too. There is value in knowing the technical aspects of music, but living in that world too much kills the appreciation of it (from what I've experienced and seen).
I appreciate this comment thread. I too as a young adult had a similar internal experience. Somewhere along the way I had lost the innocent love for beauty and I twisted music performance, technique, and knowledge into a self absorbed identity idol. I literally felt so much freedom when I changed majors from music in college. Music doesn’t play as large a role in my life as it once did, but I’m hopeful that I will continue to find healing in Christ, the creator and remaker of all things, and once again be able to enjoy music innocently and partake in it in thankfulness as part of God’s good created order. I will say, as Donna above did, that choral music did have a special way of opening up beauty while leaving behind the shackles of self absorption.

Countertenor is the term used; which essentially refers to a man singing in the contralto range.
It is uncommon in modern times for men to be able to sing in this range.
I think it gives us a clue to what the castrati may have sounded like.
He is using a thing called falsetto, which is a type of "manufactured," voice. Look it up if you want to know more:)
You should check out Dimash Qudaibergen then. He has the most beautiful voice and can sing in all range. No exaggeration. ❤
