  • I graduated from Parsons The New School for Design, in New York. This video tutorial answers the following questions:
    - Which format should my fashion design portfolio have
    - What should I include in my portfolio
    - How to show my skills in my portfolio
    - How to prepare my portfolio
    - Examples & ideas of fashion designer portfolio
    - Portfolio for fashion design students
    I tackle those aspects:
    - Objectives of the portfolio - your design major, one theme, show off your skills, your own aesthetics
    - Format - size, type of binding…
    - What to include - moodboard, process pictures, fashion sketches, technical flats, fabric swatches
    - Tips and things to pay attention to when planning your portfolio
Don’t forget to give this video your thumbs up… and subscribe to this channel because:

Portfolio Rules according to Justine Leconte
    1.) Portfolio shows specialization
    Womenswear etc
    -show only that
2.) personal skills/ what good at:
    Drawing
    Draping
    Pattern making
    Sewing
    Water colors
    Illustrator
    Textile development
3.) Cohesive whole- 1 big theme
    Examples:
    -Historical
    -Plants and nature
-Made by hand completely with hand woven fabric
4.) should look like you (also unique/ imaginative)
    Your best work possible
    5.) Format
Match big cohesive theme and skills you want to highlight
Think about format beyond the standard portfolio binder
-Can use this binder to hold work while work is in progress
    Options:
-Lookbook with a binding (binding can be made by you to show your handcraft)
    -Accordion
-Loose pages- plan how to group series/ hold together
    -poster style you unfold
    Execution:
    Style:
    -Print pages
    -Collage
-Physical artifacts : sand, flowers, fabric photos, wood, etc…
    Overall sizing??
    Each series should have:
1.) A good mood board (see Justine Leconte’s other video on this for details)
2.) Show your Creative Process (how does your brain work?)
    For example:
    -show pics from draping process
    -Visual research/ pages from notebook
-Textile experiments- pieces from, stuff to touch
3.) Drawings of final looks (see Justine Leconte’s other video”Fashion Drawing Tutorials”)
Choose method and skill you are best at:
Show you can draw and express the design ideas visually
    -by hand
    -by machine
    -painted
    4.) Technical Flats
-can be drawn with an ink pen by hand (instead of Adobe illustrator)
Show you have mastered the techniques of garment development:
    -seam edges placement
    -garment finishing
-know what final garment will look like
    -how it will be constructed
5.) Cover: has your name and one visual that represents the entire portfolio (similar to a music album)
6.) End Page: answers the cover, closes and rounds up the whole story/ theme
    Extra tips:
1.) Should be able to add pages and change series (may want to replace in future
-format should support switching and adding things after you create it
    2.) 5-6 series
3.) First series should be the strongest
4.) Second series should be the last (all other series in between)
5.) Should be understood by person looking at it even if you are no there
6.) Typeface, background, paper quality, every element should contribute and play into overall theme to make message understandable
7.) Have good quality, same size swatches (no fraying)
8.) Check out jleconteberlin on Pinterest boards for portfolio inspiration

I'm very lucky to find this video, it gave me a clear simple explanation of what a fashion portfolio should contain, I've spent 3 years in uni and no one has ever taught me the importance of a portfolio and how I should collect all my good work in one file to use it later especially when applying for a job.
I'm definitely going to follow your rules and tips and then hopefully get the chance to show you what you have taught me, I really need to show off my work as a graduate whos applying for a first job, thank you so much for this amazing helpful video

Hey Justine, Is this portfolio format for when you graduate or when you are going to apply to a Fashion Design school? From what I understood is meant to be created to showcase all skills you acquired for graduation.. Could you give advice/ recommendations and/or share a video of the portfolio you used to apply to your school? Also if you could share recommendations on how to stand out in the admission process will be really helpful too! Perhapds is also possible to share with us your experience on how you evolved as a fashion designer from how it was when you applied..and now? Thank you and keep going! Love your channel :)!

Another great video with great tips. I actually studied childrens book illustration and graphic design at Parsons and met my late husband at New School in 1973 when it was called the New School for Social Research. We met in a sociology/psychology course called "Changing Sexual Roles in Contemporary America" and then we went on to have three daughters and my oldest studied and got a degree in fashion design here in New England. Parsons is a great school..thanks for sharing again....merci!

Hi Justine, I'm a fairly new subscriber to your channel and have been really loving your videos. This video is so helpful. I'm from Australia and my daughter Chloe is in her final year at high school and wants to get into university next year to study Bachelor of Fashion Design. Getting into the course is highly dependent on providing a very good portfolio so she has been working very hard on hers (she has also been getting extra tuition outside of school on portfolio preparation). I have shared this video and your channel with her as I think your videos on fashion design will really benefit her. Thank you so much for sharing. Cheers, Toula :)

    • @justineleconte
      @justineleconte  8 лет назад +8

+Sirinda Chen A moodboard is always a good idea, at the beginning. It helps gather your thoughts & you can then reflect / edit later. A collage is rather a later step (at least for me): it works once I already have the "big idea", the direction. Good luck!

that was really helpful .thank you so much...am a fashion school student just about to graduate...had this basic query.. I like to design own prints but due to time constraints, I don't really design the fabrics I use for the sewing projects and instead buy them on retail... so my query is is it necessary to include sewn projects in the portfolio..?

    • @justineleconte
      @justineleconte  8 лет назад

+ria s It is ok to buy your fabrics. I would definitely try to integrate a couple of pieces that you have finished (I.e. patterned, cut & sewn). Then if you think that fabric design if your strength & if you want to show it, consider adding to your portfolio a series that demonstrates this skill - but this point can wait until after graduation. Good luck with your finals!!

Thank you for the helpful video:) It is easy to understand and very important tips. I am a Fashion design Student. Now planning to do a portfolio for my Job search. Do we need to write on Mood board? and you were showed fabric swatches that looks like more than you used for the final drawing, can we use extra fabric swatches as well?

Hey! I have a question... when you join a university, do they teach you how to draw?
And can they also teach you how to draw? and Sew? and Drape?. Also, when handing in your portfolio for university entry, do you have to colour your sketches?

+Olivia Ogutu They teach you everything in school. And although any previously acquired skill does help when applying, it is not required to enter. Your portfolio should, however, show that you have ideas, an own way of expressing them and that you can present the result in a structured way. So if coloring your sketches helps show what you can, do it 😊 Good luck!

Justine- what do you do with your personal portfolios? Do you sell your sketches? I've been making some sketches and hope to sell those to existing dress shops. Your thoughts?
