    I successfully graft citrus and plumb trees but as yet I failed 100% with avocado, around zero out of 25. I thought maybe I was trying too early in the season, now in NZ is a very strong growth period, so today I will have another go. I wont give up but struggle to find a logical explanation. Well done with your grafting, I envy your availability of multi varieties of scion wood. Robert

    Hi A.J.!
    Thx for the great videos. I’ve been subscribed and a fan for some time.
    I live in NE Florida (Zone 9B) and have been experimenting with creating “multi-cado” trees like some of yours. I’m using cold tolerant varieties as we sometimes get down into the 20’s here. On one of my two year old seedlings I grafted Brogdon, Mexicola Grande, James Bacon, and Lila scions. All except the Lila are thriving (the Lila scions spent too much time in the mail and were in bad condition when I received them).
    Have you had any luck with bud grafting? Five out of five of mine died. I had much higher success with cleft and veneer grafts.

    • @AJTheGraftMan
      @AJTheGraftMan  2 года назад

      Thanks for watching and following my channel. I’ve had limited success with bud grafting. I don’t do it anymore. Glad to hear you’re creating multigrafted avo trees!

  • @IrinaSol66

    Awesome informative video, really appreciated. Thank you!
    Because of my inexperience, I overwatered my avocado tree and it died ( or so I thought) from root rot. Months after I stopped watering it I realized that it was actually alive and had started growing up from the very bottom, since the rest of the tree (graft included) is dried. The new branch is about a foot below the grafting. Do I need to graft it again?
    Thank you!

    • @AJTheGraftMan
      @AJTheGraftMan  4 года назад

      Thanks! I’m sorry to hear your graft died. Yes, if you want a particular variety, you’ll need to graft it onto your branch

  • @GreenArt4

    From what I've read online, You shouldn't be looking for a smooth edge, but rather the highest chance for the cambium layers to make contact. Different depths of the cambium layers is probably why that one failed.
    In other words, it's best to make the graft a little crooked, since that pretty much guarantees that the cambium will touch at at least 2 points :)

    • @AJTheGraftMan
      @AJTheGraftMan  5 лет назад +1

      That is true, however in my experience, those crooked grafts grow weaker

    After watching your step by step demonstration of grafting, I decided to give it a try. However, I have no access to scions up here in extreme Northern California (almost Oregon). So I had to resort to ordering online. The scions appeared to be in decent shape so I excitedly gave it a try. Sadly none of them made it. I wondered about timing. It was spring, (April) but our nights are still rather cool. Any suggestions?

    Thanks for this. I was an irrigator in the fallbrook area of Ca 45 years ago when there were Reed and Fuerte grove., Many thousands of acres were planted later in the Hills west of Temecula and most of that was Hass because they were smaller so you could get more out of each acre and sell them for the same as a huge reed or the Fuerte which was my personal favorite.

I've just tried to graft onto a tree that grew from an old pit in my yard, and I've noticed that most of the branches that are available for grafting are already kind of woody rather than green. Dude, you're amazing! You have inspired me. I'm in the process of collecting scion wood now from around my neighbourhood and beyond. I'm in N.Z and we're in the middle of our winter at the moment and i'm looking forward to having another go. i had some false-takes last year that looked promising but then halted. So tell me, why do you wrap your scions? Is that to retain moisture?
    Keep up the good work!

      PolyNZian thanks! Yes the tape provides moisture and humidity, which keeps the scion alive while it’s fusing with the rootstock.

    how did you cut the root stock? I have a very long young avocado tree that I think is too tall to stand in such a thin trunk. I would like to put to fruit using a seedling of an old tree. Do you think it would work? Thanks for the video!

    Hello, I am wondering if the buds would survive 2 day shipping to northern California to graft into avocado trees up here. Thank you,

      Sally Chan best time to graft is late summer and early fall. You can buy grafting supplies from amazon. Some avocados grown from seed don’t bear fruit, others take a long, long time to bear fruit. Good luck! 🍀👍🏼

    I have been having trouble finding the grafting tape saying it’s some kind of prohibition that blocks shipping to California. I guess I could use use regular tape or plastic but what fun is that? And by any chance do you sell scions?

      Same here. For some reason, it’s tough to find a supplier that will ship grafting tape to CA. There are some shippers on eBay that will send it to CA. I don’t think regular tape would work
