I'm old enough to remember when part of THE 15 was 40th Street. 🙂

I remember the ground being excavated in the mid-90's. In the early 90's I saw the community garden on 40th street

And just like all the other freeways in the city it conveniently cut through a low income multicultural neighborhood

There's some even more fun SD freeway history out there but this was a good introductory video for the uninitiated nonetheless. The "The" in "in the 805 or the 5 or the 8" is crucial. I don't quite understand how the rest of the nation just says numbers. lol

In the Pacific Northwest, "The 5" is "Eye Five."

Actually true San Diegans historically have NEVER said the "the." That's a Los Angeles perversion which eventually worked it way down there with younger people. It was always I ("eye") 5, or just 5 (as in "Take 5 South...")

So the reason why we might call it I-805,Interstate 805,Freeway 805,the 805 Fwy(Jacob Dekema Freeway) is because of something from where is starts and ends.So you know I-5(The 5 Freeway)right? If you see Exit 1A for The starting Of 5 Freeway,You will see it say Interstate 805 NORTH:San Diego Exit 1A.If you meet up With Exit 30 or coming back from Los Angeles or south. You will see Interstate 805 SOUTH:Chula Vista Exit 31.Why does it meet up again?I-5 crosses Downtown and is full with traffic,so you will say It might be a Alternative route. They also Call it a Interstate because residents traveling to Canada,San Francisco,Los Angeles will know that the residents have to continue on the highway to get their easier. For Example,I-15 NORTH meets up in Exit 63 with Interstate 215 NORTH:San Bernardino,Barstow and after passing Los Angeles for I-15,You will meet up with another Sign that Says Interstate 215 SOUTH:San Bernardino,Riverside Exit 123.Same goes for I-5 with I-405 in Los Angeles.

Explain why in LA 405 is called "The San Diego Freeway" when it neither starts nor ends in San Diego, but then 5, which goes to San Diego is the "Santa Ana Freeway." Weirdness.

Where 405 merges into 5 at El Toro Y interchange near Irvine Spectrum, 5 begins to
be called the San Diego Freeway from that point southward and is no longer called the Santa Ana Freeway. Santa Ana Freeway is the name of 5 from the East Los Angeles Interchange to the El Toro Y interchange.
Since I-405 is an auxiliary route of I-5, it’s connecting traffic to the San Diego Freeway portion of I-5 starting in Irvine and that is why it’s called the San Diego Freeway since it dumps all the traffic heading southwards onto 5 and it is going to San Diego.

What? Everyone I know in the Bay Area says “the 101, the 5, the 680, the 280, the 580, the 80 “
