    Why wait until the rod is glued up and you can't fix anything to check the dimensions. Bind it up without glue, check the dimensions and work on the strips until you do get it right before gluing.

      I don’t need to because with the vblock I get a reliable, repeatable correct dimension. Of course if you are not achieving that with your methodology then you can bind and measure but that is more work,. Like all things, it it works for you, stick with it. The block also helps measure individual strips to make each one uniform which leads to straighter sections.
