The mental health of doctors in Gaza: "Survival is not a choice"

- "Doctors and medical staff in general are trained to see blood, to see things that would be hard to see for most people,” says Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) psychologist Audrey McMahon. "But what they've been seeing [in Gaza] is extremely distressing and disturbing for any human being.”
After more than six months of relentless war, Gaza’s healthcare workers have faced unprecedented challenges in providing medical care every day while trying to survive and manage the toll the conflict has taken on them personally. The impact of working in such conditions could leave scars that last for years to come.
"We've been hearing [how] medical staff in Gaza are heroes,” McMahon says, "and I think they surely are for what they are doing. And yet it's not a choice. They are all in survival. What else can they do? They have absolutely no time to process what is happening to them. Survival is not a choice.”

I saw a video of a doctor who had been detained and his family separated and he does not know where they are. He was taken stripped tortured besten and released after 60 days. He went back to a hospital and just started working. Trying to survive and not knowing of his own family dead or alive. Relocated. I wish i knew his name.

I am a nurse, and I know how much medical staff cares about their patients, it is that everyone becomes family. When we can do things to help the patients it feels good, when we can't, it makes us feel incompetent. The bigger picture for all of us on the outside is a feeling of the same incompetence. So many keeps trying to get the horror happening to the people of Palestine to stop and for them to be safe and free of the occupation, and yet the killing and destruction continue with funding from some countries. This is a nightmare that we must stay focused on the positive results, but also have to face the reality of what it is so we can change it. Love to all those who are trying to help, and love to all the people of Palestine!

Im a 28 year old Australian who has not seen tears in 15+ years. No nut is tougher than me. ice in my veins. but this shit just made me ball out. i never for a single second thought about the medical team seeing/hearing these things for 10+ hours a day. weeks and months on end. the words of "i can't even imagine" belong in this context with strength.

I have watched the work doctors without borders do, for decades now, and I'm totally blown over by their dedication and resilience in preserving human life in places where conditions abound to extinguish all humanity and all sentient life. As a person who didn't finish the medical field in the 80s, I understand their sacrifice when coherently, they decide to put themselves in extremely violent environments, just to fulfill their sense of duty to their fellow human beings. True heroes! You make me regret I chose to divert from becoming a doctor. You have my deepest admiration.
