This set is a madness, Neffa is such a technical DJ, man's got mad skills on deck (check out his 4 deck mini-mix for Rinse, it's absolutely nuts) And Manga? One of the best in Grime, period. The fact he doesn't get mentioned in the same breath as Ghetts, Kano, Skepta, JME etc is honestly fucking crazy to me. When people talk about who's best in Grime he deserves to be a part of that conversation
28:45 you’re talking about neffa mining the lyrics in time with manga. Here Neffa has played the instrumental from Manga’s song Slew from his Outbursts from the Outskirts album (my favourite). Manga has naturally started spitting the lyrics from Slew, over the instrumental from Slew, so he’s basically performing the song, but neffa starts fucking with the beat to make it interesting. Chopping and mixing. This probably wont have been preplanned, will just be something that happened when Neffa chose to play that. About collaborating before a set to prepare, you’ll see MCs that have clearly prepared together like Scrufizzer and Maxta when they go back to back for ages on the Grime Sessions set, or any YGG set. However you don’t really see MCs that have worked with their DJ beforehand to plan where the beat switches are gonna be or what instrumentals to expect or “I’m gonna shout here so give me a wheel”. That stuff could possibly happen, I’m not a rapper so don’t know, but as a fan I don’t think it’s common at all unless you’re performing a show, not a radio set. Some MCs have a close partnership with a DJ like Mez and Grandmixxer. They have done so many hours of working with eachother that they can work telepathically almost. Grandmixxer knows the bars and the flows of Mez and knows what he’ll do if he chops here or switches to this or that beat. They’re working together to achieve the energy and reloads and sometimes the DJ will just set you up for success and give you a lay-up for a wheel.
8:30 - yeh It's defo all gas but you can lift off the peddle for a few secs Be careful though, if on a set with other man, other man will try jump in. Notion beat isn't out, it's hard tho. 24:25 - That needed a wheel, those deep lyrics over such an anthem. Neffa defo felt that bar too. That lyric he wheeled is a percy too. 27:53 - Manga was gonna spit a different bar, but clocked the beat was one that he had a big vocal on and spat that lyric instead (tune is Slew Ft P Money & Jamakabi produced by Lewi B). The reason why he keeps missing the last word of the bar is because on the record Jamakabi says 'slew'. 28:44 - ^^^^^^ Old bars that was laid on this beat originally, Manga clocked the beat in like 0.02 seconds and spat the bars. *NO SET PRACTICE, DJ TAKES YOU ON A JOURNEY, MC'S RIDE THE WAVE AND SET THE VIBE.* MCs have no idea what beats are coming up and when, it's organic. DJ's might try take the instros in a direction where the MC is going, or just do what they are going to do, it's completely down to who the DJ is. Some DJs and MCs work together more frequently so they can get great chemistry though. 30:02 - Manga talks about the beat and how it became the vocal we know (slew). 35:10 - Shadow mixing 46:38 - Defo throwing shade at GHS (imo) for reading off his phone while clashing Logan at Mode (you should check out that clash, it's on RUclips and super recent). GHS was reading off his phone because he ain't really been doing too much music and the clash was on like 24-48 hours notice, but still... Don't worry though, Logan calls him out a few times for it in the clash. Also Logan made this beat (alongside J Beatz) tune called 'Drill Fish' off the 5 Clarters EP. 51:48 - You got to see Manga on more sets, when another MC goes in or says something crazy, Mangas facial expressions are priceless. The warming stage doesn't count if you are late for a set fyi. If you join a set in the middle, you are expected to touch down running full speed. Good example of this is in the 'Grime Show: Sir Spyro b2b DJ Maximum with D Double E, Footsie, Mez, Capo Lee, Flowdan & More' - the set is over an hour long, Flowdan touches down in the last minute and kills it in the last 10 seconds of the set. *You should check out the Slimzee and Snowy Pyro set*
Definitely check out the Slimzee and Snowy Pyro set, that set is filthy. I had to do the comment edit trick to get my other comment to actually go through.
yess g so glad you checked this one out, been listening to it all week RUN FOR YOUR LIFE is the new album, you should defffo check it out when you get a sec if you havent also he keeps saying "return of the big money sound" because him and neffa did a pyro set like a year ago that was an instant classic, imo its even better than this one neffa is a super tekky dj compared to the average grime dj, hes using 3 decks and whippin the upfaders like crazy, i think thats also why it takes manga a second to get ontop of the riddim sometimes
You don't have to use only new bars on a set.... Infact, we want to hear your main bars on different riddims aswell as new ones and your sing along bars And secondly no, no you are not allowed to rehearse a set before hand .... you just have to both shell down and record
Love the Grime sets, thanks for finding the time!
