- Two people were hospitalized after a large brawl broke out near the Santa Monica Pier Saturday afternoon. At around 2:21 p.m., Santa Monica police responded to reports of a fight just north of the Santa Monica Pier near Tower 14.
A police drone arrived at the scene first and witnessed an active fight taking place on the crowded beach. During the brawl, one person was stabbed and another possibly broke his ankle, police said.

There was very little homelessness back then, to be fair. People worked for a living wage, and we had a low cost of living & retirement pensions, as well. But most businesses were small businesses during the height of The Beach Boys success, which was the embodiment of free market capitalism. Pandering to corporate politicians, and giving corporations endless power, plus endowing them with "people" status, is what's gotten us into this mess.
@@carolinematusevich889 I worked for a HUGE company in the 70-80's, Hughes Aircraft, at that time employed 88K people in California. The benefits were amazing. Many people worked their entire careers there. Pensions were replaced with 401K about mid-70's. The gas embargo and Vietnam messed up things pretty good. We had our problems. What is missing is pride which seems to have been replaced with drugs. Everyone wants to wave their own flag/cause.

Yep, one party at a time. It first began with Reagan. Destroyed free community college, and sold out all college students after he became president. I can go on and on, but typical conservatives never admit to their mistakes, and project their failures upon liberals all of the time. Unlike them, the typical liberal is willing to admit to their mistakes without externalizing. They're also more intelligent with connecting the dots, such as accepting the fact that as population density increases, so does crime, traffic, prices of goods & services, and all types of pollution.

This is what people imagined that Venice Beach might encounter. Not Santa Monica. I guess the crime index has risen so high in Santa Monica. That it's shouldn't advertised as family friendly.
Crime has been horrible there for at least 25 years. When I visited in 2001, I wanted to see the SM Pier. My bf suggested not to, as the crime there was getting similar to Venice Beach. Today, they're pretty much the same. From what I've heard recently, the area got cleaned up during the 00's, then got worse, then improved some, then took a nose dive right after the pandemic began.

Just to give you some insight. I was born and raised in Los Angeles. Growing up in Marina Del Rey as kids in the early 70's. We were never allowed to go to Venice Beach. Because Venice back then had lots of baggage. It was seen as a Hippie and beatnik refuge. Usually runaways, marijuana usage, associated with lots of fights and hobo turf brawls. So as 10 yrs old during the summer months. We were allowed to go to Santa Monica to hang out. Usually to the arcade at the pier. Santa Monica was definitely family friendly and little to almost no crime. Of course, Santa Monica was mostly single story. Those are the memories to Santa Monica I remember.
In 1979, our family moved to Redondo Beach. But as punk and new wave took over the LA scene. My second bout with Santa Monica as a late teenager. Was attending the alternative club 3-2-1. I think that was the address too. It was located on the 3rd Street promenade before the streets closed down, and became trendy in the 90's. Actually, everyone would do that exact pedestrian hang out at Westwood Village in the 80's.
My.. have times changed. I've just moved back from out of state. To take care of a 94 yrs old father. What really gets me is how people play this entitlement game in LA. Just because they've lived at a place for 5 years. Sometimes these complainers need to hear it from someone that can tell them the real history.

Im from the Portland area, i thought Portland was disgusting but i stand corrected. Ive been in southern California for the last 3 days and its hands down the most disgusting cities ive ever been to. You guys ever hear of a pressure washer? They clean the filth off the side walks, you guys should check them out, great little tools. And another thing, you guys ever scratch your head and wonder where all the tax dollars are going for road maintenance? Because these roads are the worst ive ever seen. There's gravel roads in Portland that are smoother than your freeways. What a disappointment coming here for vacation.

Did you guys in Portland ever get rid of the rats in the gutter by the convention center with those twin towers? I saw them back in 2005 in an underpass while waiting for transportation to our hotel with the other convention attendees. Oh, and I recall seeing a tiny mouse get crushed by the tires of the SUV in front of me on that east-west freeway which runs out to the Mt. Hood area.
@@thegoddessdiana9185 I would assume not. Don't get me wrong, Portland is disgusting. But in the last week I've been to San Diego, LA, and Portland. Hands down Portland is a much cleaner area. They have retracted just about all of the extreme liberal policies that didn't work and just created more of an issue, they voted out a liberal prosecuting DA that didn't do his job and put in a pro police/law enforcement DA and quite frankly started cleaning up the city. They cleaned up the streets, picked up the trash and covered the graffiti. It almost reminds me of the good ol Portland in the late 90s. I figured socal would be similar but I didn't expect it to be this bad. And the roads are unbelievable.
