Traveling with Fountain Pens: How do they fare on plane rides?

  • Travelling for holidays? This is for you.
I was worried about travelling with my fountain pens as I had heard a few stories about leakage.
I brought a TWSBI Vac Mini to ensure I had one pen that most probably won’t leak. I added my favourite Kaweco Mellow Blue and my favourite TWSBI Diamond 580, both inked, to test how they’d behave, and two empty Kaweco pens because I was thinking of using them during my stay.
In the spirit of experimentation, I also brought a vial of ink to see how vials behaved when travelling by plane. The same ink was to be used with the Ruby Red in case I wanted to use it.
Here is the documentation from choosing my pens to unwrapping them after. I’ve decided to leave any pen I purchase in the Philippines uninked, so I can pack them away with no worries.
I hope this helps those who are a bit wary about travelling with their FPs. I know I was and couldn’t find any videos to show me how painless it could be.

Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
I remember being a youngish boy in England, receiving a fountain pen as a birthday present.
Sadly being inattentive to learning how to write and maintain my fountain pen? I stopped using it. Also lack of patience.
I want to return to using a fountain pen. There are pros and cons to everything, however those pros out weigh the cons, when it comes to fountain pens. Thanks again for your video.

You’re quite welcome. ❤️ Would you still have that pen of yours? Pens that hold personal stories make them much more valuable. ❤️
