I will watch this again and look for more of your videos. Thanks again. You are kind and generous to share your talent with us. You are a great teacher as well.
I’ve been watching several of your videos now and I’m so impressed and pleased. You’ve taught me so much and now I’m eager to start painting again after given it up for several years. Thank you so very much! ❤❤ ❤
I think this is the best seascape watercolor that I have ever seen, and I have seen many. Your paintings are wonderful, and you are a great teacher as well! I love that I have finally found a watercolor teacher who knows how to paint the ocean and spray and foam exactly right!
Mr. Cartwright, Your tutorial gently demonstrates so many valuable pieces of information: preparation of the paper, a spare but informative drawing, the mixing of a large quantity of key colors, the importance of soft and hard edges and the delicacy involved in reserving white paper. I'm amazed at how much you imparted and demonstrated in a single tutorial. Will be searching out others of your videos.
An excellent demonstration. Lived in that town for 30 years and spent lots time on those rocks while hubby fished for tailor off the point. I’ve seen that wild surf that made it unapproachable. You’ve captured it’s raw beauty and made this sort of scene attainable for a novice like me. I could almost smell the salty air. I appreciate your time that you share Joe.
Hello Carol, glad you liked my video. It is always nice when someone tells me of their connection to a location I have painted. One day I was approached by a lady to do a commission of a lighthouse. I told her I had some reference photos I took of the old lighthouse at Crookhaven Heads , she said that was great as the commission she wanted was of that very same lighthouse where her dad was the lighthouse keeper for many years. The the commission was for his 85th birthday present!
I started watching this, needing something to send me to sleep. I apologise! I was mesmerised by your talent and technique. Usually I paint in acrylic, but now am drawn to watercolour. Thank you Sir, for the enlightenment. Pure genius! 👏👏
Wow, the way the waves materialized with your amazing talent was mind blowing! Love love! I want to try painting this type of painting with all your great tips!
Joe…… this is stunning! I feel like I’m at the Oregon coast on a stormy day! Colors are so true to the water and foam and rocks! Mesmerizing! I think I’ll go put my Aussie Drizabone on😉
I loved watching you paint the wave crashing on the rocks. It looks really difficult, but you have broken each section down and explained ‘how to’ so clearly that I think I might give it a go. Thank you Joe.
Loved watching this - this video really demonstrated the value of being good at drawing to get a good composition at the outset and was more detailed and technical than many other artists videos showing how to do waves in watercolour. Not sure I could replicate it, but certainly enjoyed watching it unfold. Thanks Joe,
Thanks for the feedback Jeanie. As long as you got some useful information from it I am happy. The skill comes with working out what to do, and lots of practice! :-)
Thank you Joe for such an informative tutorial. I learnt so much watching it. I was looking for a tutorial on crashing waves so I could learn how paint some of our New Zealand rocky beach scenes. This was just the tutorial I needed.
I love your sea color and your technique of wetting the back of paper first. I have not been able to find gator board in our community but I will keep looking. Thank you!
Thanks so much again Joe, so very informative, so much practice to do for me, management of both the flow of water (or lack of it) and the thickness of paint, using what I already have in my palette etc. such a lot to remember, but little my little things are sort of becoming automatic - so that's an improvement
Thank you master for this tutorial. I was just wanting to start painting watercolor seascapes with rocks and foam. A few months ago I bought one of your books and I am learning a lot. Always so clear in your explanations.

Love all of Joe Cartwright's incredibly helpful "suggestions" and lessons. I don't know the time frame here, but I would very much like to know what kind of pallette he uses. I must have one!
Thanks very much for the feedback Joan. I am based in Sydney, Australia, if that helps. The palette I use is one I designed and printed using a 3D printer. I wanted one that had plenty of room for paints, large mixing areas, and could be used both in my studio and when I paint outdoors. As each has to be printed, the price is $60 Australian plus postage if you are interested.
@@JoeCartwright Thank you so much for that prompt reply, Joe, and while I'd very much like to have that unique palette (same 3D printer that can make limbs???), I'm sure the shipping would prevent my food shopping for six months. I'll keep searching, hoping there's something out there that can equal what you use. Thanks again.
This is such a helpful video thank you so much! Did you use Arches 300lb cold press for the painting and what “board” did you wet to put the wet paper on please!
Glad you found my video helpful! I use Arches 90lb coldl press and the board I used is called gator board. But since then I have found that a piece of flat acrylic from the hardware store works just as well.
What brushes are you using? It’s clear you’re using a natural hair brush in this demo, just wondering what brand or hair type. You do a knock out job with ocean scenes, which most artists find daunting (it’s probably the negative painting LOL)!
@@JoeCartwright Squirrel AND Takklon? Wow! They have a pure squirrel look/behavior to them from what I can see. Maybe I should rewatch? I recently bought some squirrel rounds that were on clearance at Jerry’s Artarama here in the states, with the label “Creative Mark.” I could have sworn we had the same brushes, they look and behave the exact same way, even down to the color painted on the handle and the metal ferrule! And funny enough, I was looking up NEEF the other night because another Australian artist I know mentioned them. And now I just learned Creative Mark is what’s called a “House Brand” so it’s been imported to the States under the name “Creative Mark” and resold by Jerry’s Artarama as it’s House Brand. Which is the long way of saying - hey we are probably using the exact same brush that’s made by the same brush company- and sold under different names in our different countries. Wild how that works!
I talked about these things in the video but I will try and make it more clear in future demonstration. Maybe a quick text page at the start of the demonstration.

Yes, I have been doing that in my later videos. All a steep learning curve for me. I suggest taking a screen shot of my photo near the start of the video.
Can you do a pink/orange sunset over crashing waves with the sun almost down but you can still "sea" the shape of the sun? I'm taking in all the details of your paintings before I start learning as much as I can thank you for your videos
The trick is to break you painting down into smaller steps. My video shows you how to do breaking waves, then the light from the sun will have a reflection similar to what I did in this video: ruclips.net/video/mAHP4B1ZPiA/видео.html Then the orange and pink sunset can be done like this: ruclips.net/video/mQYAgQWF0WU/видео.html The color of the water will be changed by the colors in the sky - plenty of free photos on the web can show you this. Good luck. One day I may do a video like you request but sadly I have many more I need to do before that one and they each take about 3 days to produce! :-)
Hi, I really enjoyed your tutorial and I have a small question. Why didn't you start the painting by painting the rocks? This will give shape to the painting from the beginning... 41:21
