Hello from Odawara, We have been serving turkey, ham, stuffing, mashed potatoes, salad and pizza for 7 years straight for our students. Our students love western style Christmas at our school. We don’t charge our students and families for this event, because it is a time of giving and family. That is what Christmas is all about.
I live in Texas, and a long time ago at my sister's house on Christmas Eve we were discussing what to eat. Now I might add that the turkey and sides are for Christmas Day where I live. Anyway, I said let's have a traditional Japanese Christmas Eve dinner. My family looked at me like, "WHAT are you talking about?!?" Then I added, "KFC". Yes, we had KFC for one Christmas Eve. Just wanted to share. Merry Christmas!
Just for information, they were forced to change name from Kentucky Fried Chicked to KFC for trademark issues. The commonwealth of Kerntucky trade marked their name, and people can only use the work "Kentucky" if they got the permission of the commonweath of Kentucky and also paid trademark fees. They than changed their company name to "KFC". Just the history behind that.
Interesting! Thanks - they def should pay Kentucky some tax but really, now no one is going to use Kentucky. I wonder if New York did that too? Imagine if California did.
No they didn’t, they changed the name to its acronym back in the early 90’s to take the emphasis off of “fried” so they don’t sound so unhealthy when the health food and organic craze started taking off. They’re still known as and called Kentucky Fried Chicken by management and everyone.
@@goldenshark3182 😂 I don’t know WHAT to believe 🤷🏻♂️ having FRIED actually makes me want to eat it more. Like it’s home cooked. KFC sounds like a corporation that has processed everything and I figure millennials might see that too but I’m at the peak and no clue what the ones down the slope (the millennials) think about KFC. I eat it once every 2-3 years.
@@onlyinjapanGO I’m the exact same age as you John and was a Junior in high school in 1991 and one of my good friends worked at our local KFC when that name changed happened and he explained to me that was the reason they changed the name, to take the emphasis off of “fried.” By the way, Japan’s KFC chicken looks a lot better than at the KFC’s in California. It’s been at least a year since I’ve had it too, I almost want to try it for lunch today! Thank you for your videos, I really enjoy watching life in Japan, when covid ends I really want to plan a trip there!
Yeah, I saw that too... looked totally like a deliberate photo bomb, luckily he was just about to zoom in on the KFC so they were denied. When he zoomed back out seconds later, they were totally gone. PDA is still a questionable thing in Japan so that was interesting and funny.
I went to KFC in Akihabara a couple times for Christmas. During one of them, I was able to get a roasted chicken leg with some kind of sauce without pre-ordering even though it was on the special Christmas menu. Always thought convenience stores and other places also sell chicken legs to provide some sort of competition or alternative to KFC. Probably also better for those who didn't pre-order on time or for single people who can't finish a whole bucket by themselves. And egg nog, I feel like special import markets might have them, but I don't know for sure. I just went to a US base to buy it when I was living in Japan...
The Japanese are pretty open minded about adopting ideas from other cultures although turkey is not one of them probably because of the difficulty of procuring it and cooking it in the small Japanese ovens. For those of us in the west a large part of the appeal of turkey is the ritual and other foods that accompany it like stuffing, cranberries, candied carrots & yams, mashed potato, giblet gravy, etc. I think if Japanese people were able to experience a turkey spread in a western setting they would fully comprehend its appeal. Seriously, is there anything more satisfying than a full turkey dinner at Christmas in the company of family?
It not that it is the size of the oven, most people have toaster oven over normal convection ovens. Also as a annual passholder of USJ that where I get my turkey.
I'm all about the family traditions. I think it is fun to learn how they form in a culture. Merry Christmas John!! Be sure to start your own traditions with Kanae!!
Great Video, I've decided to start the KFC Tradition here in San Diego. A friend that lives in Japan does it every year . She has this thing she does with a packet of KFC Ketchup. She cuts tiny holes in the eyes and mouth of the Coronel's face ,then squeezes out the ketchup through holes . Weird but quite funny. Have you heard of that tradition ?
In Australia we generally have Seafood and fruit for Christmas as it's the middle of Summer here and Turkey is more of a winter meal (we don't really eat Turkey here). We also have Christmas Lunch as the big Christmas meal which is usually outside in the sun or on the beach. It's a very different type of Christmas.
MERRY CHRISTMAS JOHN!!!!! 👋👋👋👋👋🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄 Awe your so sweet I love your quick little live streams as much as the long ones!!! I like that thirs it's your fun time, it's mine too thanks man!! I cam be excited about Japan here while also learning things, your helping me remember so much Japanese just hearing you speak and also when you give us little lessons!!! Thank you cant wait to see your indoor camping kanae is so cute she definitely needs Santa jammies!!!
Worked for KFC for 8 years in Canada... Grey Cup (Canadian Football Championship) and Mother's Day were our busiest days....thinking back...taking preorders would have helped a alot!
Thank you too John and Kanae and all John's friends. ❤️😋. Your making a hard Christmas with a family member taken by covid , a little easier and feeling the love from Japan. Camping! Pawsome!!!!! Cannot wait. John Daub camping is almost as tradition as British Carry on camping . Lol Big respect from the UK.
Merry Christmas John & Kanye! I went to the Gandam Factory in Yokohama today. I hope you can do an episode here! It is an eye opener for the anime and Gundam fans! Please stay safe and healthy:)
Why honey maple and not maple maple is for 2 main reasons. 1. Honey is easy to get everywhere 2. Honey is pretty cheap and transporting it is easy to ship everywhere without worrying about spoiling.
Last year, I spent christmas in Japan with my mom and sister who live there and my sister reserved a KFC christmas meal for us so that's what we had for christmas in 2019. I miss them so much this year.
I have head of this when I lived in Japan. The TV commercials promote it. I would love to have some KFC right now. Thanks for the show. You always do a nice job.
My first visit in Japan was on 2nd week of November 2017 and I am surprised to learn that Japanese celebrate Christmas! I never thought that I would see Christmas stuffs in Japan!
Imagine that, at the end of John's broadcast, the pigeon "flew the coop" as it were, after sensing that the end was coming. 😂😂😂 Happy Holiday's John and Kanai! 🎉🎊🥳🥳🎍🎍
Hi John fromOklahoma, merry Christmas to you and kanai. I saw on the local news showed an area in Tokyo that is decorated and lighted somewhere you would go to. It was so amazing!
Hello, Merry Christmas 🎄 I added the link of this video on my description because I made a vlog about KFC Christmas Tradition in Japan. Thank you for sharing this! Happy Holidays from the Philippines. ⛄️
went to KFC Mt.Rokko just outside JR Station not long after xmas 2017. They have kind of traditional KFC menu, with sesame seeds or something. It taste so KFC but in the same time so Japan also!
I mean if you think about it, food is a cultural connection for Americans as well. In our own traditions of Turkey for Thanksgiving(pumpkin pie) and Christmas(Christmas cookies). Then how many eat sushi and ramen or Chinese food, at least for the first time, because the interest in the culture? Or things like US version of October Fest in some areas.
You always have some kind of fun facts to share John 👍 What really got my attention was July 22nd "1974" was when I enlisted into the US NAVY. The same year you was born 🤔
In 1970’s it was not the bucket, but a whole chicken that had to be pre-ordered at KFC for Xmas, if my memory serves right. They still do it. It is プレミアム ロースト チキン.
Thank you for sharing this! I do remember them serving full birds during holidays when I was a kid but had forgotten and didn’t even think that would happen in Japan! Such an interesting piece of info, thank you again.
Missed this livestream :( But glad to watch on the replay. How did the KFC chicken taste? Just like back in the US or is it not as salty? I was surprised the piece you ate was as big as it was. Being in Japan, I would have assumed the serving size would be much smaller. That biscuit though, wow! That looked much better than here in the US. Maybe do another livestream from a Taco Bell again? I agree with Jari Hult that it's weird to be required to make a reservation in advance. Guess it was to make sure people would be social distancing? Thanks again for a great livestream! Merry Christmas to you and Kanae, John! See you next livestream!
@Navi Skyline The one John ate didn't look greasy at all. US versions to me are too oily. That's why I usually like to get chicken from Popeye's since they're not oily. I'm sure the Japan versions are all about being as customer friendly as possible so that's probably why it's not oily. I tried the chicken at Lawson's when I was in Japan last June and it was a little greasy. Still tasted good though!
It was quite salty and I could taste the chemical spices, I mean - it’s not bad but it stays with me for a while. Too oily. But it’s fried chicken so 🍗- once a year for me at most. I prefer Karaage, yakitori, chicken nanban!!
I’ll be going to Japan this year for Christmas. How would I get to reserve a chicken dinner even from outside of Japan? Would love to partake in the tradition hahaha
We got KFC in Akihabara on 26th dec last year, the funny bit was the poor serving guy panicking because there was no English version of the Xmas menu (unlike other days of year) - with a tiny amount of Japanese skills easy to order of course. Kentucky should have just allowed KFC to keep using the name in exchange for a $0.50 cut per chicken or other purchase. That adds up.

I didn’t find any at Meidiya or in Ginza. I guess people can make it themselves if they have the spices.

Totally agree! :)
Merely twice eat turkey in japan, and both of them in USJ😀
They don't adopt, they assimilate what they think is good and useful for their society, that's a difference.
