  • In this video I installed a transfer switch in my home that allows me to quickly and easily switch certain parts of my home over to a backup energy source.
The transfer switch I selected is the Reliance Controls 306D
The plug is a Journeyman Pro NEMA L14-30 Model HJP-2715
My external power source/station is a Renogy Lycan 5000

I have solar tied into the grid (solar credits...yay), but I'm looking into my best options for having a battery backup -- I feel like this setup is exactly what I need, but wanted to make sure I wasn't considering something. This would tie into our box in the basement, whereas our solar system is basically outside of that (feeding into the grid and turning off in a power outage).

Grid tied solar is awesome for what it is, but as you know, without batteries it's not a backup solution. This fills that void.

Do you have to switch off any breaker on your main electrical before turning on your generator power?

No - Once everything is installed correctly, as he demonstrated, you never have to touch any breakers in you home circuit breaker box when the power goes out. All you have to do is flip the switch from "Line" to "Gen" in your transfer switch box. When the power is restored in your area, you will have to go switch them back to "Line".

I admire your skills but this is something I wouldn’t be comfortable doing security wise, so I will hire a pro.
