    He sang a poem from Khajuye Kermani who used to live in Iran 7 centuries ago. Most Persian music translations you see here on youtube are literary works that are not transcending the true meaning. They should be translated conceptually (like what Edward Fitzgerald did for Kayam´s poems) which I admit is not everybody´s job.

      @@mkh1990-h4t Having a degree in literature doesn't mean you can translate a poem. Poems in essence cannot be translated, they can be reconstructed in another language and if you are to do that, you must be a poet yourself, not a translator or a literary scholar.

    This is the old Namjoo, who made young folks fall in love with his music: The eccentric, Tehran university dropout with a background in traditional and folk music, and a taste for rock and blues.
    The lyrics are from two classical poems with the same meters and rhymes, written by Hafez and Khwaju. (Both lived in the 14th century.) Hafez is considered to be the greatest Persian poet ever by many people, but his magic is always lost in translation.

    Dear Mace,
    1. This is a classical Persian poetry
    2. The translation wasn't accurate but translating a Persian classical poetry from 7 centuries ago is too hard. At least some one has tried. I appreciate it.
    3. Regards to your comment about traditional Persian music and blues, Namjoo believes that there are a lot of similarity between traditional Persian music's elements and blues elements. He believes that he tries to explore and and use those in his works.
    Regards,

    Thank you Mace for bringing back lots of memories for me. Mace is Ace I should say.

    for the original record, he has done all the instruments playing by himself.
    means he played guitar and record that, then drum recording and every each of instruments first played solo and record and singing record separately then he has mixed them himself. also the lyrics and composure has done by himself. One guy in the studio alone. Amazing talent.

    I guess when he says Toranj means the patterns in Persian carpets. If you see the Toranj patterns you understand why it says " you will not fit inside the world".
    a pattern in the middle, and at four corners some parts of the main pattern repeated.(like fractles)

    • @MHonari
      @MHonari 3 года назад +3

      No, it's the (unreachable) fruit. There's also a wordplay in the second line, "Thou art better than toranj", where "beh" (meaning better) is also a fruit.

    • @hodabp6351
      @hodabp6351 2 года назад

      Nice notion! In that sense Toranj is a metaphor of the sun, since another word for that pattern is "sham' seh" literally meaning the sun.
      In the poem where it say "لیکن بدست نایی" (yet, [you are] unattainable) Toranj also has a reference to josef (the prophet) story in quran, in which josef, as a drop-dead gorgeous young man, comes passing along the queen's female seated guests while they were cutting oranges (toranj) helping themselves, and they cut their hands instead stunned by the beauty of josef.
      (I don't know whether the the same story is mentioned in the bible)

    It has so many meanings that it is hard for a regular translator to translate it in English. The translation can have multiple meanings depending how you interpret it. For example it says "She Replied" but if you interpret the poet as a talk between the God and his servant and then the meaning of "you be a servant, servant will become respected" will change for you.
    I am not that qualified to translate such a text. Someone with more knowledge of Erfan and Sufi should be able to translate it in different ways.
