Love this movie. And the costume in the film is beautiful, the linens and cloth are so meticulous and well done. They may live on a small farm with no food, but man, their clothes are high end stuff. And im in love with Thomasin, the tragedies and torture she endures in the film are heartbreaking. What an incredible actress.

I feel like they should've marketed this movie as more of a period fantasy or period drama rather than straight-up horror. The trailers made it look like rescuing the baby was going to be the main focus, but that was just a catalyst for family tension.
This is certainly one of my favourite films of recent years. It really has a sense of foreboding, drenched throughout it. I like to go along with the theory that the food that the family are eating/ have to eat is contaminated and causing all the hysteria and hallucinatory goings on. It doesn't matter what is actually going on to me though, as the film holds together fantastically well and the actors performances are convincing throughout. I will have to rewatch it again, soon. There is also another film in a similar vein I have just watched (hence why I am here) which I had never heard of or seen before, called Hagazussa from 2019. This film took me by surprise! It has some startling folk horror tale and landscape imagery in it and a brilliant standout performance from the lead actress Aleksandra Cwen as Albrun. It really is her movie. I could have almost switched off the sound and just watched the wonderful cinematography and her performance. If you haven't seen it before Maggie, there is a great trip scene that I think you would definitely appreciate. Maybe, you can discuss this one, one day; although there are a couple of scenes in it, which are not for the faint of heart and a little distressing but essential to the plot. I will certainly be watching it again at some point
I don't know if you've seen it, but OCULUS is on Netflix and it came out in 2014. It's one of the great horror films of recent memory. about regret, family, mental illness, and unhealthy obsession. I think it's one of the most well made surreal horror films of recent memory. See it if u havent.

"Let the Right One In" (2008) and Seventh Seal (1957) And completely unrelated, "Pusher" (1996)
Pretty good but short analysis, but then again the film is very...simple in its nature. There is a decent amount to unpack, but there would have to be a lot of spoilers I guess. This is one of the only modern horror films that really hit the nail on the head for me. So many others that people praise nowadays just do not follow up on quality for me, but Eggers really got it right on this one. It's too bad he couldn't quite do the same with The Lighthouse, but this one stands alone anyway.
One of the main reasons I like this film is simply because I'm fascinated with witches, much like Eggers himself who's talked about the film being inspired by his childhood in some ways. I can certainly relate to that as someone who, like many, grew up with fairy tales that had witches in them. But this of course follows the puritan view of witches and I love how faithful it is to the lore. Just really interesting stuff.
The Witch quickly became one of my all time favoritw horror films. I love your connection with The Virgin Spring, one of my all time favorites. Probably top 10 if I did a list. SPOILER: I don't know what the hell some people's issue is with the ending. Like no movie ever ends with 'the bad guy winning'? It was the perfect end for this movie 100%.
Looooove this movie. God I felt like I was truly pulled back in time and surrounded by puritans. Anya is one of the most exciting young actresses around. The Queens Gambit was incredible too. I am stoked that Anya Taylor Joy is in the new Mad Max. Spot on casting, George. Cant wait to visit the wasteland again in 2023.
I loved the visuals, score, and performances, but near the second act it really fell apart form me. A lot of the themes that were started in the first half really didn't get tied up for me. Mostly due to dramatic irony and the lack of mystery.

I like the subject of occult spiritualism. One of my favorite films is The Wicker Man. I also really like The Virgin Spring, although it's a dam bleak film. I'm waiting for a filmmaker to bravely explore the subject of Satanism within the Vatican. Now *that* would be cool. But *that* will likely never happen. :-) Have you seen "The Ninth Gate"?
I've also liked Ms.Anya Taylor Joy's work in "Split" with James McAvoy and "Morgan" with Michelle Yeoh and Kate Mara. Both films show a side of her acting skills which is hard to execute by just any other "newcomer" actresses.

It is one of my all-time favorite movies, with actors I adore and a plot I can relate to, but be prepared to hit the stop button in the third act. It is superbly made in all aspects but I sincerely caution against it because of how profoundly unsettling, realistic, and plausible some of the scenes are. Would it suffice to say that it makes Eastern Promises or The Shining look tame?

I wonder if you've seen "The Eyes of My Mother". This is a recent horror film that I found quite compelling - beautiful atmosphere, dark, disturbing, poetic dread, etc. It's also the debut feature for the director (Nicolas Pesce), and though you can see touches of the great David Lynch, German expressionism, etc., (it's very american gothic), I thought the director already shows a personal vision. There are some very powerful images in that movie, really dredges up the subconscious.
i have to say, i thought the ending was ....a bit to "on the nose" and "bolted on" as if they thought well we've come this far we have to give some sort of "afamation" to all thats gone before, when it had been so ambiguous . Where as i felt it was in its ambiguities that the story held its power, i mean, was it a salam like ergot problem? Where the rotten wheet was the true culprit or was there somthing more to be had .. well that i guess was answered , but not in a satisfying way
Do you think it was intentional that the parents are so unlikable? Even those twins... I thought the end felt positive as well because Thomasin was free of that family lol
From what I saw there was no liberation to be had for Thomasin in the end, but rather what we were shown was the closing of the jaws of a carefully laid trap.

I think this movie pulled off individual things well. Such as acting, tone, overall plot. But for me, I just wasn't that entertained, I was a little bored, and it was just a forgettable movie for me. It felt like the director was trying to be artsy and that's great and it was obvious all the talent involved. But if I'm being honest my gut just said I didn't enjoy watching it. In the end s movie is supposed to entertain you and this movie didn't entertain me... Would be a good film to study in a class or something. But not something I'm gonna recommend to anyone
Your use of gestures is prolific! Your reviews are definitely more ecstatic because of them, it shows how authentic your cinephilia is. But the liberation idea, idk, I think her very liberation is unsettling itself. Her intent is innocent and her participation seemed accidental. This does show much more insight as to her personality and ego, how strangely reactive yet self-directed she can be. That's subtle yet complicating, nonetheless, I agree w/ you. I'm uncertain as to whether you've heard of or seen it (entirely different sort); "The Lobster", I think you'd appreciate it as a cinephile. The director's a bit of a cinephile. May have to visit a niche theater but it's well worth the experience. Would really look forward to your reception of it.

michael I actually did end up checking out this movie. I must say, it's definitely a great movie. Very eerie and sinister. And seems very realistic in the way it was shot. I wish I had the dad's deep voice.
This movie was soooooooo slow and booooooring omg, and I'm an Art House/Indie Film Nerd, please do yourself a favor and go see IT FOLLOWS , that's the most original horror film in years and that's a fact not my opinion .

I also found the last scene to be a liberation of Tomasin. I was at times reminded of Neil Jordan's Company of Wolves.
I was so impressed by the freshness and overall quality of this film; also ATJ, who was just amazing. I own it now.

Yes, definitely. It created this feeling of distorted interaction and paranoia.
Although this movie had very creepy imagery and excellent use of symbolism and allegory, It didn't resonate with me afterwards.

Directed by Eduardo Sanchez, of Blair Witch fame. Don't let the run-of-the-mill sounding synopsis scare you off. It's an exceptional film.
