NTV Captain Atlantis Special - Countdown To Disaster - Closing of Argentia Naval Base
The Closure of The U.S. Naval Facility at Argentia, Newfoundland
Recorded on 2016/04/09 from NTV - Canada's Superstation
It breaks my heart to see this base close down, i serve there from 72-74 and loved it, have many happy memories from argentia and its canadian natives
Richard Villalon Didn’t the American keep their underwater secret program there operation Sosa do you think any of that equipment is still there and don’t worry it’s declassified already they used it to find the scorpion and the thresher
If you ever seen two boys flying past the guard post on dirt bikes it was my dad and his brother lol
Was there from Nov67-May69. Base was very busy at the time with the VP squadrons and NavFac. I worked at the Communication Station out on the very end of the peninsula near the end of the main runway. Contaminants were being put into the ground almost since its inception in 1941 with all the aviation and shipping activity. Fuel, oil, hydraulic fluids. Then all the asbestos and other contaminants above ground. Don't know who the the tall shaggy haired guy was but he was being a pain in the ass with all his questions to someone who had no knowledge unfaultingly. . Probably a reporter or a politician. Didn't sound like a Newfy. The poor Ensign was just guiding them around and was getting bombarded with questions he knew nothing about. I have mixed emotions about my time there. It was very lonely being a young single enlisted man living in the barracks and my particular work schedule was brutal. There was absolutely nothing to do off base unless you went to St. Johns. Thank goodness for the Windjammer EM club. Lots of girls looking for a hookup back to the states but I was very young and wasn't ready for that quite yet. All in all I guess I wouldn't trade it but there definitely is better duty. The married guys liked it because it kept their families together but I found it somewhat depressing. The locals were nice but relied heavily on the base for employment since the decline of their fishing industry. I wanted to take a trip back up there after retiring but my wife has no interest whatsoever for some reason. She hates the cold.
I was stationed here 69 to 71. My favorite duty station love the people, love the country.
‘58-‘60. Loved every minute of it ! “Shameded a me life Bye”!

I was stationed there in 75-76. I was a Navy Seabee. I wish they would have let me stay there my whole enlistment.
My grandfather performed at the Windjammer Club under the stage name ‘Ronni Day’ back in March 1964. I wish I could find a video of him singing “Hello Dolly” by Louis Armstrong.
Operation Sosa that’s what was in the T building I wish they never blew it up
Jim Thoms did this documentary back then...he's no longer with us!
