Poor Boys Garage...
Special Thanks: To my subscribers that love this car and bike stuff as much as I do, and letting me show you some of the things we do around here. Rescue classic cars!
I remember back in 1973, a neighbor who was a highway patrolman, would sit in his Dodge patrol car every winter morning about 6:30 and crank and crank on that thing for minutes at a time trying to get it to start. I didn't need an alarm clock on the days he worked. They were a real problem. It was amazing that the starter would crank that long and not burn up.
The only Mopars that had issues starting when new were 318 2bbl cars...All others would start up right away like a new car...I know I was around when they were new...even 15 year old ones when I turned 16 440's in 0 degree or colder weather would start right away 1 pump and hold the pedal down a quarter to half pedal and it fired right up...I removed the choke on mine as it was driven daily and I took off right away...With the choke it had high idle for 30-60 seconds..My cars like this were a 65 Monaco 2door with a 383 4bbl and 68 Charger RT 440 4bbl(still own it)..Even today my stock or somewhat modded Mopars start easy..I think the trick to making them start easy in all weather is getting lost..
My Uncle was a plumber and owned his own company and had over 20 Dodge Vans for his company 1973-1985 models when I worked for his as a teen(I washed them on the weekends) The 318 2bbl vans started then if you shut them off within minutes they flooded! He had 1 with a 318 4bbl and no issues,360 2bbl,4bbl started perfect as did a few of his big block one ton vans 4004bbl& a few 440 Vans..From 79-on they were all 318 or 360 vans..The only vans that had trouble starting were SOME 318 2bbl vans..others would crank over like a new car today..People didnt sit for 10 minutes to start to get it going, hit the key most took off when the choke was still on and they went...
Back in the 80's my cousin and I would push his dads 360 2bbl Cordoba out and take it for a joy ride,we pushed it down the driveway,2 houses up the street hit the key and floored it outta there..The car started quick and never missed or hissed! 79 Cordoba the lean burn was removed and a 1971 360 2bbl carb was put on,car was very quick too!
I love the sound of those starters!
Nice Charger. On brakes, if I’m not familiar with the brake configuration I take one side apart and leave the other side assembled as a pattern.
I used to carry spare ballist resistor in my glove box it's a must have for old Mopar
Speedometer noise fix. Pop the cable off the back of speedometer and spray graphite into the cable. You may need to repeat this a few times. Always works for me. ✌️ Nice car !
When i had my 70 Charger I daily drove it. I had to always carry an extra orange box with me, they would always burn out. When that happened, I would just replace it on the side of the road.
Ditched the stock system in my ‘70 Challenger for the MSD and it made a huge difference. Been problem free for years now.
MSD is the way to go, no doubt!
Fine job! And that goes for the video work too. Very impressive 😀👍
I have a 72 charger SE, got it 8 years ago. It was rough, non running but solid. Now its yellow and black hidden headlights 440 bucket seats counsel slapstick posi 3:23. Not giving her up. Currently working on 73 challenger 360 4 speed bucket seat with my son for him. Keep up the mopar vids!!
We love the mopar around here, just don’t find them all the time. If I get a chance to save one, you know I will, for sure!
An aunt of mine whol lived in Brooklyn, N.Y had one of these years ago. it was a n SE, nice car. She was going to give it to me once she got another car. Someone ran a stop sign and T boned the car. I was never given the chance to get the car once that happened.
that sucks!
Subscribed. Love your channel! It would be amazing if you could make cold start videos on all of the awesome carbureted cars and trucks you have and show us the proper cold start procedure. So many of us don’t know carburetors well and you can show us how you start them - like what you do with the gas pedal and stuff. Love the channel, man!
I like the way he is still gettin onit driving home without tags...lol...I remember those days...
Very cool....mine is a 71 383 charger so this is good video! Been running the box ignition on my ramcharger and my 76 charger for 10 yrs no failures I always add an extra ground to case.....and make sure that when key goes to start it bypasses resistor for full voltage to coil to start easier and then in run goes back through resistor to step down voltage at coil....box will cook if you run a 12 volts all the time. But still carry an extra box and resitor just in case.
Thanks for the support sounds like a sick ride
Very cool!
A petty blue 72 charger is one of my dream cars. I worked all summer one year mowing an old Mopar guys grass and doing odd jobs for him and was supposed to get a 72 charger se with factory sunroof, and it had a 67, 383 in it. Unfortunately after finally getting to take it home, he couldn’t find the title. I tried for a year to find and get a title for it. Never got one, so my dream car had to go back to being the old mopar man’s yard art again. Same guy had a plum crazy 70 ta challenger sitting in a rickety 1 car garage.
Man, that Challenger would have been a good grab too! Lost titles always make these old cars more of a challenge. I love a 72 Charger, and I think my buddy still has the blue one for sale.
@@PoorBoysGarageUSMC poor old guy got taken bad on that challenger. He traded it to a shit bag car guy for a 70’s camaro that supposedly had a real 69 L88 427 in it. Turned out to be just a run of the mill 454 with some 69 427 heads on it. The old guy died a short time after that. It’s a shame. He owned a mostly MoPar junkyard for about 30 years. Was full of old mopar muscle. The epa shut him down as they did many private owned junkyards in the 90’s and he died broke, and on disability.. sad deal all around. I still want a charger just like this one.. someday maybe, but until then I’ll enjoy my 58 Studebaker silver hawk 😎
Great video!
hey how yall doing keep up the good work enjoy watching you
That car is an SE edition. Special rear side window. Looks like sky blue. All SE cars had the hideaways.
I like these 3rd gen. Some great content you putting out regularly.
Thanks for the support
Lots of great tips on the brake reline. Never over tighten them brake lines. Did that years ago and it put a tiny crack in the flare going into the brake hose.
Had a 73 Dodge Challenger that color with a black vinyl an R/T hood and a chrome luggage rack on the back deck! The girls loved it with the faux fur black seat covers and the black interior!😝😜😍🏁
Sounds like a sick ride
Loving your channel thanks!
Thanks for the support Jon
Awesome video man!!!!! That’s my love the 3rd gen chargers!!! I would love to get ahold of another one especially that 72 rallye under the cover
Thanks for the support
Great video. I have to get that hoop for the springs. I can't find the tool that has the j hook on it that goes over the post and removes the spring as you rotate. The cup tool that goes over the coil springs and lets them come off without going flying is good to have, too . I might suggest breaking up the video into two or three. 1. Get her running, 2. front brakes, 3.rear brakes. Apparently people like 15 minute videos more than 30-45 minute ones. Also, I might want to find "rear brakes" but wouldn't find it in search because it would seem like it is only a "get her running" video from the title.
I love the pin type calipers but the pins do tend to loosen , then let one end of the outer shoe go flapping. I noticed the clips that look like a folded over matchbook with big holes in the middle are missing on all the pins. And they are expensive. They may help the unscrewing problem and may prevent rattle. Hard to tell. Classic Industries carries them.
Most 72 440 Charger SE had dual exhaust, and chrome tips for dual exhaust. Two separate options. N95 (California) cars did not get the chrome tips because California blocked air grabbers and tips in the 440 and 400 engine cars that year.
The tips returned for 73 with a revised exhaust.
The car in the video does not have the rear valance for the tips nor the code for them on the fender tag.
Great video and info, thanks
Thanks for the support
I had a 72 charger red and black se. Looks like my old car
That looks great going down the road great video I also like that brake tool I have to use vicegipes
Thanks Phil. I think I used to use everything as well, until I discovered that little hook tool. Makes it a lot easier on me.
Loved this vid mate from the UK
Thanks for the support from 🇺🇸

Sorry to be off topic but does someone know a trick to log back into an instagram account??
I stupidly forgot the password. I love any help you can give me!
@Demetrius Jaylen instablaster ;)
@Barrett Finnley i really appreciate your reply. I found the site thru google and im in the hacking process now.
Takes quite some time so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
@Barrett Finnley it worked and I now got access to my account again. Im so happy:D
Thank you so much, you saved my account!
@Demetrius Jaylen Happy to help :D
Nice options, floors shift, rear defrost, upgraded dash vinyl top, hideaway headlights. I wonder what he will be asking for it.
Nice 72 bro. Get r done
I will!!
I don't understand why everyone believes that Chrysler electronic ignition and the ballast resister is such an issue, ive owned at least 1 and most of the time 2 of these every day of my live since 1979 and in all that time I've replaced 1 ignition box and never had to replace a ballast!
That wheel master cylinder looks pretty good in there
Is this Proform electronic ignition kit a good replacement for the Lean Burn ignition on ‘78 Córdoba? The timing can be set properly in this car but for some reason it will retard and gas mileage will suffer. The Córdoba has a 318.
Hello from Charlotte
LOVE FUSELAGE CHARGERS!!!
The break adjuster is called the star wheel
Get rid of that rubber fuel line and plastic filter - major fire hazard.
Get Lucky!!!
That’s why shops charge 125 dollars an hour for labor, because most take extra time to keep their customers alive
I wish I had the money to get another one. I want one So bad.
nice garage.
Thanks really appreciate it
I miss my 72 Charger
My 71 has that problem with the hideaway headlight i took the motor apart and tried to get contact those cams in there are a lil hard to understand still won’t shut.
Make sure the contacts are making connections on the open and close
hello boys👍🇨🇦
Hello!!!!!
we are just about 15 miles apart
Nice car, a 72 with a ralley dash and buckets! 3rd gens finally getting some love these days! Restoring a 71 on my channel
I think a 71 looks real good.
@@PoorBoysGarageUSMC Yeah finally get some part support. When I bought the car 18 years ago there was nothing for 3rd gens
Hi .... I'm Batson ... Say hello to Batman .... Sha⚡am!
👍
I had a 72 SE Charger, hideaway headlights, 400ci, and it was red black top white interior with slap stick. I should have never sold it with the values they’re up to!!
Sound like a sick car thanks for the support
I'd rather have a 440 than a hemi. Most of us did back in the day too.
This is one from where the 69 Charger and the one your son has came from right? There was this one and another blue one that was real rough? I can't help it every time I see this color I start making it into a 43 clone in my head! If this was mine I would sand the filler that's on it now and redo the lead joint where it chipped out and lay out the red so it would cover the reworked areas, I would spray the red in basecoat so it covers faster and is dull like the blue, letter it and call it good! But it's not my car! Good job getting it drivable by the way! It's a cool car for sure!
No this is one my buddy Larry picked up. It hasn’t ran in sometime, so he hit us up to get it going. I want to say it came from Goldsboro NC
I had a 74 SE it had the 318 and I swapped it out for the 426 hemi and a built 727 toque flight tranny ...you said something about your buddy might want to sale the 72 would you let me know how much he's asking for it ..
426 is the baddest of the bad, in my opinion. We have never had a true 426 Hemi at the shop as of yet. My buddies 72 is up for sale on FB market place here in New Bern NC. Thanks Gordon
Typically 440 factory equipped later Chargers I've seen had the "Bulge Hood". Curious that this car hasn't one 🤔
No good answer for that question.
@@PoorBoysGarageUSMC It is an SE, 400 or 440 in an SE would have a flat hood.
About half the 440 cars were SE, which you could not order the bulge hood even as an option. The Rallye had the bulge hood standard.
My dream car there. How much?
Love to have it but it would be out of my price range
Yea that’s a charger for ya
I'll give ya 5k !
are you selling this charger
Mine had a 400hp and sounded like that.
I think this one had about 300 if lucky. 400 sounds better.....thanks Scott
@@PoorBoysGarageUSMC yeah 400 / slap stick 727 torquefight transmission positrack rear end it was wicked and it was just all stock
That's the thing with them old cars you get a bunch that want to run and then there is one that's going to be a little SOB the whole way through
Yep!!!
Did he sell it?
gone a while ago
Those single plane intakes looked great, but I'd take that one off the car.
This has to be Cooter's son
That would be cool
Sounds good to me man .... Stay away from Roscoe's boy
I am interested in this car. let me know if it comes up for sale
I will
awesome man
We can not hear you.
No wheel bearing repack? Shame on you! 😁
Whats its worth what he buy it for?
Not sure what your asking. Are you asking what he paid for it? It sold a while back
@@PoorBoysGarageUSMC im asking what is it worth what did he buy it for
@@robertromero8094 oh got you, he sold it for 9500, sat on the market for a couple months though
@@PoorBoysGarageUSMC jeeze thats solid money for that shit box. Im looking at one kinda similar condition is why i asked love old muscle cars just getting into em.
Ask your buddy what he needs for the 72 I'm interested hit me up let me know
I will
In 72 that should have had factory electronic ignition. Mopars only put power to the coil when the key is in run, not start. If you add a relay to put power to the coil when the key is in start, they light off very fast. (I use the starter relay to run my ignition relay.) I forget the year they added power in the start position, it was around 1973 or so. Nice car.
It has the factory electronic ignition in the factory location.
They only put the power to the coil *through the ballast resistor* when the key is in run. They put the full 12 volts to the coil when in "start." Hence a car will start, then die when the key is turned away from start to run means a bad ballast, or a disconnected wire on the output side of the ballast.
change those wheels lol pl
Agree! I can’t stand those wheels on that thing
If you ain't poor when you start workin' on a Mopar, you soon will be!
