notes I took to help you:
Messa Di Voce is extremely coveted skill.
It means sing one note soft to loud to soft.
The five pillars of Messa DI Voce are:
    1. Breath Control: not blast the air to achieve loudness
    2. Pitch Control: trying to stay on same note
    3. Compression control: soft sounds not be airy or even falsetto and loud sounds not to be squeezed at all
    4. Larynx control: larynx tends to go lower when loud and high when soft. aim to minimize this as much as possible
    5. Resonance Control: don't only go outward to get louder and stronger. increase resonance to increase volume
    Exercise:
    HAH-EH-EE-EH-HAH
    HAH
Your videos have been so helpful. especially in this lonely time.

Want to thank you immensely Justin for your outstanding vocal videos. As a vocal industry coach myself.. one knows that most vocal coaches are locked at the piano having to accompany students, while trying teach correct breathing, resonance placing, intonation, etc. I love that I can cue up specific exercises quickly from your videos and have my students do them. I assign besides my own vocal exercises and breathwork and health maintenance many of your videos for homework. I have seen truly astounding breakthroughs with students.. All my students enjoy your fun and sometimes silly approach and the handsome Leo persona also helps... Like me you do your best to make singing fun while teaching the science of sound. I'm amazed how when I test my students on placement such as difference between chest, head, falsetto, etc they retain and understand. Keep up the great work, and my best to NYVC..and all my vocalists friends in NY on Bway, Opera and Cabaret/Jazz.

Hi, Justin! I'm Tiziana, an Italian singer and a vocal coach since years. I really want to thank you for your wonderful, enthusiastic support to me, and teaching me to explain better the wonder of singing to my students!! Sometimes it's so difficult to transmit and explain them some dynamics and singing concepts!?! Thanks to your explanations and support I can be more exaustive and deeper in my teaching them how to adquire the magic of the voice! Never found a singer or a vocal coach in Italy to explain singing like YOU do! But I'm sure you know this!! And for this reason I'm translating some of your episodes to my students, who don''t speak English, every time we need it. THANKS so much!! Love you for what you're doing!!

I'm currently working on Messa Di Voce. It makes your voice sound so freaking awesome. It's air control and chord closure working together in harmony. Lip trills helps you so well with under standing air flow. If you want to start to under stand this start there. I did lip trills 2 hrs a day at first and just lip trills tell I understood what they where doing.

Justin, you are the bomb! So much stuff I didn't know. All of it spot on and so practical. I have sung for years. Popular music on stage, and worship music in church. Even have taken lessons over the years. Never learned any of the intense technique you espouse. You know so much, and all of it legit, not bs. Thank you so much. I am a 58 yr old male, and I, like so many of us, try to sing the high stuff (Journey, Foreigner etc). I suspect at this age, it is not realistic to think I could or should be able to do that effectively. What say you?

My teacher didn't tell me what this was or meant so I didn't know it was a technique....another program teaches this but differently than how he is doing it here both are I am sure going to be beneficial now that I can use both of these...so great as offen as he does in these videos that he shows the uses in songs! He is truly a blessing! Oh so it's a crescendo and a decrescendo?

I actually used this technique when I was practicing "On The Street Where You Live", and didn't even know it had a name. 😅 It's very helpful with some traditional musical theatre songs, when you need to find the balance between lightness and strength. Instead of making the chorus sound too belty or too weak, I was using Messa Di Voce. 😁

messa di voce : to let your voice go from soft to loud
    important components
    - breath control
    - pitch control (be mindful because it tends to be hard when doing the same pitch)
    - compression control
    - larynx control (minimizing laryngeal movement)

This lesson was especially important for me because of it's need in church solo's (Orthodox Christian chants and song prayers)..
I 'll have to look into your home study lessons....I have bought many others already, but you seem to speak in an expression of simple science.....
and you make science as a background when you put the entertainment element of the explanation, including the inclusion of you palm and piano, at the front of your presentations..
Anyways it keep me interested and I am using your ideas such as using gween gween as a tool for practicing. Thanks again to you and your team Jason..

I'm a Lyrical Tenor. I can do the Pitch part OK, I can fight tension in the voice as I go up in volume, however: I feel like the difference between soft and loud is really small. I know breath control can help this some. I definitely support my singing from below. Dramatic singers have 0-10 range and I feel like I have 0-3! I know that doesn't really matter. Microphones help! I'll work on it more! Thanks for another amazing video.

But there is one thing I want to know, what is the correct way to increase the volume of your voice, someone told me once that it's from your solar plexus is that true? Or you just have to blow the air more to increase the volume?

    Hi !
    Thanks for your video.
So for the soft sound, does it have to be some kind of head voice ?
I often heard that singing piano requires a lot of support and abs, but it seems that when i do it doesn't require at all..

Justin, you are amazing in your way of explaining Messa di Voce. It's so clear and really helpful. I love following you and your advice. Thank you, thank you! God, was that a great lesson!

I want to ask some direct advice. I am 18 months into training and cannot get past a g#4 using Messa Di Voce clean. Once I get to that A4 (you know, like in the last note in ´´Bring Him Home´´) and I try to do it quietly, my throat begins to strain. I can vocalize up to an F#5 - not pretty but it is David Lee Roth solid - but cannot get past a quiet A4. Please advise. This is the bane of my vocal instructor and myself!
OK, so not really the bane of her, I am being a bit dramatic after today´s session. She is a coloratura soprano that buries Maria Callas on ´´Queen of the Night´´ and she is in her 60´s! So she really presses me to get high, in a musical sense.
Thank you for any help and please know that you were my first resource back in January of 17.
If anyone else has some solid advice on how to keep the throat relaxed at or above Tenor C, let me know!

    Hello I'm
Daniel and I've only really got into singing these past 1 and half years, been in a musical theater class and taken lessons from a teacher, been in showcases and musical, mainly ensemble. I am able to sing bass and am working on tenor but I just think the sound coming out is dull and boring, I can hit the notes correctly but I just can't seem to sound worth listening to for like a solo or duet. Which of your videos or tips do you suggest could help me. I've also recorded myself and sung in a mic and listen through head phones to try and figure out what does and doesn't sound good but I still don't like how I sound

I've been practicing this a while and I'm still having trouble, I feel like I run out of breathe and always slide on a scale type sound (which I think it a lower pitch) when I am coming back down and can't seem to get it, any tips of what I could try to help with that?

This is an advanced skill for sure. I'd say to get the basics really solid first. Did you know that Justin has a vocal training course you can download: voicelessonstotheworld.com/page/vocal_course -NYVC
