Oikawa wasn’t talking about himself as the great white eagle, he was talking about Ushijima. Oikawa’s volleyball focuses on teamwork. Ushijima is the lone bird. Btw you should definitely rewatch on your own time. You pick up so many details you miss the first time
I would also recommend watching the dub if you do want to rewatch….part of the humor sometimes gets lost in translation and the Haikyuu dub is high quality

@@akaza1623 that’s certainly one opinion but she’s already watched in sub so I don’t think there’s anything wrong with her watching dub in a relaxed environment where she doesn’t have to answer to anyone lol Like for the most part I think the sub version of anime is more emotional but I also think that especially when someone is new to anime, it shouldn’t matter how they take it in as long as they enjoy it

@@swlfangirl I literally can't stand the dub. Whenever I see a clip from it I automatically assume that it's a parody. Haikyuu dub is a joke. If that's what Vic wants to do then fine she can do what she wants. I just felt like fighting your opinion with my own.
Also: The reason a lot of lines are so cringe is because she's watching it on Netflix and the translations there are absolute garbage.
The "Hinata from the concrete" thing is bc Ushikawa (Ushijima, the one that doesn't look like he's on highschool) told Hinata & Kags when they were on his school that Oikawa was strong but his team wasn't so he couldn't "harvest" good crops (calling his team barren soil), so Hinata was like ?? if they are barren soil then we come from the concrete ?? bc he was so surprised at Ushi calling Seijo weak, considering they lost to them on season 1. BTW congrats on the engagement girllll
Just to point it out, Ushiwaka doesn't see anything wrong with the statement. When Hinata flips off and refers to himself as "from the concrete", Ushiwaka apologizes for hitting a nerve and then tells them to "git gud".

Should also be said, growing out of concrete is a lot more difficult and shows strength.
It actually translate to "from the rubble"
Shiratorizawa and Aoba Josai (aka Seijou) are both private schools. On the other hand, Karasuno is a public school. Private schools normally have more budget for club activities in terms of facilities, equipment, and coaching staffs. Wakatoshi Ushijima (nick name as Ushiwaka) compares those 2 private schools to the richness of the soil. That is why Hinata was saying Karasuno as concrete.

hinata does literally say “hinata from the concrete” because ushijima belittled him by saying “no good fruit comes from barren land” referring to oikawa in aoba johsai. since at the time karasuno lost to seijoh, hinata perceived it as a way to say “karasuno is below barren land” and therefore used concrete as an analogy.
Additionally, Ushiwaka called the other schools barren soil and concrete because they don’t have the resources his school has, facilities, coaching, finances, etc. In his mind because the other schools can’t provide as much for their athletes they are not as good.

Ushijima called Aoba Josai "barren soil" implying that everyone there other than K-pop sucked. Hinata then asked "if they're barren soil, what are we? Concrete?"

In 11:16 Oikawa said that a murder of crows could even kill a great white eagle. He wasn’t talking about himself. He was talking about Ushijima. Ushijima was even depicted as a white eagle when Hinata and Kags first met him.

@@locomojoboy2 well he said in the video, that he’s been watching it on his own lol. So watching season 3 is a good spot to start REACTING since it’s shorter and less daunting. Just like there are certain Marvel movies that are better for people to watch along without any context, different seasons work well too. It’s better to watch everything in order in both cases, but if you have to watch one season, it’s a good place
exactly! watching the whole show again isnt that appealing especially for non-hardcore fans who just like the japanese, but the eng dub humor is too funny! "Hey hey hey you on a break right now?" "I will not allow you to be intimidated by Ushiwaka!" "hey nerd with the glasses!" "It's tsukishima" "Fine Tsukiblededeh!"
There is also an extra clip on RUclips, which shows something similar to this after match build up for season 3, but for what happened with Aoba Josai (Seijo) and its players

When Victoria was getting anxious about the end and wondering if something was going to happen, I couldn't stop thinking about Hinata just riding his bike home and then out of nowhere Ushiwaka shows up and just beats him up so he can't play the next day LMAO. That is such a hilarious thing for me to try and visualize, I love it.

Hinata from the concrete is not really a joke. Ushijima said something like good crops can only grow and be harvested with good soil, meaning that his school is the place where great players are made. He also calls Aoba Johsai a weak school so by the metaphor Oikawas school compared to Ushijimas offers only infertile soil, where Okinawa could not grow into something amazing. Spinning Ushijimas metaphor with the soil further, Hinata then asked if a strong school like Aoba Johsai ( Oikawas Team) is only infertile soil what is Karasuno then? (Since Karasuno is seen as a weaker school) Hinata then said, Hi I’m Hinata Shoyo from the concrete, (to emphasise the difference between their schools) I will show you what can arise from that. It was kind of a badass line :D hope that explains it!

But with sub, the atmosphere is different and the delivery of the voices is more emotional. Depends what you are into because things like sk8 to infinity I DEFF prefer dub, so fun. I also love Death Notes dub, but everyone does, lol.
And things like AOT and Haikyuu it is sub all the way.

Season 3 is the PERFECT season for Max to jump in. I mean, you guys could catch up in the off time, but seeing him watch S3 would be fun!
Also, maybe Hinata being more manly as the series goes on will help you buy that he's the oldest of the freshmen (out of Tsukki, Yamaguchi, and Kageyama) more and more.

Vic, they're not pro athletes that need to avoid social media for their mental health. They're just high school kids who want to see themselves on TV.
and also, it means a lot for the Karasuno team to be featured or seen on tv since they became less popular prior to that. So it makes them excited.

When Oikawa said "A murder of crows may be able to kill even the great white eagle" it's a warning for Ushijiwa. You'll get it in season 3.
He should watch season 3 with you. Don’t know how much he knows about volleyball, but Tsukki needs to see Tsukki play.

One of the best things about Japan in real life is that they are very disciplined when it comes to sports they always shake hands after the match with their opponents, they always pay respect to the audience who have come to support & they clean their own dressing room and many more such things. One of the best examples is 2018 Football world cup where Japan team completely cleaned the dressing room and left it how it was when they first got the room, even though they lost the match in Round of 16...
I will forever have cavities from the sweetness of the Yachi-Hinata-Kageyama trio. They're so cute whenever it's just them, Yachi is like the sweet bridge between the two.
Hinata calls Oikawa "Great King" because Kageyama was "King of the Court", but Oikawa was his mentor. Thus Hinata said, "Then he must be the "Great King!!" And he started to respect him after playing against him, saying he lives up to the name.
So glad someone remembered to point this out for her!
20:52 Shoyo's far from fearless. He's brave in the way that he works past/does stuff despite his fear, but he certainly isn't fearless.
Karasu in Karasuno stands for crow. Shiratori in Shiratorizawa stands for while bird (white eagle). So when Oikawa talks about how even a murder of crows can defeat a white eagle to Ushijima, he’s using the animal reference to compare both teams and warn Ushijima.
Also for future reference:
Neko in Nekoma means cat.
Fukuro in Fukurodani means owl.
Majority of the school names in Haikyu has an animal relation. You’ll continue to see it throughout the anime and the symbolism.
Finally! Been waiting two weeks for this reaction. Gonna comment first even before watching.
Petition for Max to join Vic for Season 3 reaction, but if he really can't join for the entire season, at least make it for Episodes 4, 7 to 10.
"I'll show him how much we can grow from concrete" It's not a joke. Ushijima called Seijoh barren soil and said that no fruit will ever ripen effectively in barren soil. To which Hinata asked him "if Seijoh is barren soil then what are we? Concrete?" That's where Hinata issued a warring statement and vowed to beat Ushijima. Ushijima looked excited as he saw them off and remembered their names.
"A murder of crows might even take down a great white eagle" Oikawa isn't talking about himself. He's warning Ushijima to watch out or the crows are gonna knock him down a peg. BTW that line "never forget my worthless pride" is one of my favorite moments in the anime. Still gives me chills every time. Oikawa at this point is one of my absolute favorite characters because of his depth and the guy has layers to him that no other character so far seems to have come close to. I'd go so far as to say he's more interesting than most of the main cast.

Max HAS to react to season 3 episode 4
The concrete actually holds a double meaning. Yes there's the part where it's not "fertile soil", but the one of the dominant bird species in cities, also referred to as concrete jungles, is the crow. The crows do what they need to do and thrive even when the resources are scarce in a concrete jungle.

Many people have commented this already, but we did tell you at the beginning of the season that the eagle symbolizes Shiratorizawa and specifically Ushijima. The great white eagle oikawa talks about is Ushijima

a bit about Ushijima: his full name is Ushijima Wakatoshi, but a lot of characters in the show call him "Ushiwaka" as a nickname because it's literally just a combo of the first parts of his first and last name.(Ushi)jima (Waka)toshi. So if you ever get confused about why it's sometimes Ushijima, and sometimes Ushiwaka, that's why.

Congrats. Have fun in season 3. About the concrete thing, Back at the start of Season 2 Ushijima commented on how you must have good soil to grow ripe fruit (basically knocking oikawa for not joining shiratorizawa, being a good seed but his team being infertile soil).
At the time, Karasuno had already lost to Aoba Johsai aka Seijoh (Oikawa’s team), so Hinata asks, “If Seijoh is infertile soil, is Karasuno concrete?” That’s why he’s Hinata from the concrete.

The concrete thing isn't a joke, it's something like an analogy about them being not even compared to soil and Hinata saying he's from the concrete then lol. Season 3 is one entire match btw, ep 1 is only the intro to it (starting ceremony etc), so don't be surpised when you start. Season 3 is awesome :)

I’m more surprised you don’t get the “concrete” analogy. Something people say in the US when they grow up in poor living conditions is they “came up from the concrete” or “from the trenches” as a way to say they’ve beaten the odds & achieve what they strive for regardless of their come up
I think it's more like she forgot the context. It was a very small scene so it's understandable.

@@benalark1771 It's more like "cattle", since cow would be 雌牛. Also, I believe the choice for Ushiwaka's name has a lot more to do with the childhood name of a famous historical figure.
