"Love is not a victory march, it's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah". That is because to win in love is actually willing to lose (sacrifice) and that is how love wins. So it is the exact opposite of a victory march but by losing love wins and God is glorified even if it may leave you cold and broken........"Hallelujah" means Hail/Praise be to Yahweh (God). A perfect demonstration of this paradox is the CROSS and what it entails as well signifies.
@Jackie Treehorn Jeff was not religious.....no one spiritually enlightened is even if they may have to pretend to be religious due to familial or environmental reasons. Key word to what Jeff said is "I don't have any allegiance to ORGANIZED religion"........"organized" is key here...absolutely key. Plus "Hallelujah" is a song originally written and sung by Leonard Cohen not Buckley so the words in the song reflect Cohen's thoughts....Cohen was Jewish. One more thing, the Bible contains great truths even if the stories in it is not necessarily factual all the time.....it starts with the fall of Adam and Eve symbolically referring to a paradise lost but it ends in the Book with a paradise restored.....metaphorically this could be what Jeff meant when he said "you have Eden immediately but that Eden was lost"......the notion of the fall of man is so that you do not start with the default setting of PRIDE meaning after you are born you embark on a journey to find that lost paradise and it starts with a condition of wretchedness not glory and pride....implying the default setting of your existential condition is that of HUMILITY in search of a paradise that was lost. You can be atheist and yet still appreciate and understand the poetic truths of life through metaphors like I just explained. The difference between the believer (who may or may not be religious) and the atheist is the believer finds the restored paradise through GRACE not his own personal efforts or works because of the works, suffering and lives of those in the past that laid down the path to the new restored paradise especially that of Jesus Christ while the atheist does it through his own works and efforts owing nothing to any Savior meaning the atheist is more likely to boast about his efforts leading to his discovery while the believer inevitably is humbled still because he/she did not save himself/herself since GRACE is a gift that you receive even though you entirely do not deserve it meaning it cannot be earned. This is a world view of the believer that affects how he/she sees life and approach life's problems and challenges. In the simplest terms.......Christianity should be treated more like an outlook on life.....a world view rather than a set of rules, regulations and rituals that all religions are made of.
Correct, love is only 1% a feeling, LOVE is many things like patience, forgiveness and many more. Love and faith are not victory marches like you say, Time of grace is a gift and not earned so being proud of yourself that you can walk in love isnt quite what the Lord wants haha, sounds a bit silly hey. But you are 100% right.
A song that is complicated in my mind and makes me think and feel. Beautiful. Written by Lenard Cohen, of Jewish Faith, about Suffering, Joy, and Faith. Jeff Buckley sang the best version, in my opinion, but was found dead in a river. My life, as his, is also so complicated. Wake up many mornings with this great song on my mind. Again, BEAUTIFUL. PEACE AND FAITH TO THE WORLD, complicated or not.
Imran Haider There isn't really much to disagree or agree on here. Foul emotions towards a person being worse than a word not being used towards a person, pretty much a solid fact if you have a good moral standing.
First heard this song on an episode of The OC way back in the days when series were watched on the television and you had to wait all week for a new one to air. And had to schedule to be at home when it did Anyway thinking about buying a shirt of Jeff Buckley. This song moves me every single time.

VideoGame Addict237 Here is the best interpretation of the song I've read. Leonard Cohen, reportedly, wrote 80 verses of Hallelujah before recording it. Interpreted by : Francis O'Brien **Many times Cohen says hallelujah in many different contexts; this is the core of the song and will be explained at the end of the analysis. For the first part: Now I've heard there was a secret chord That David played, and it pleased the Lord But you don't really care for music, do you? It goes like this The fourth, the fifth The minor fall, the major lift The baffled king composing Hallelujah This relates to the story of King David who was had an intimate relation with god and was also a great harp player (secret cord/pleased the lord). The hallelujah at the end of this verse is a happy and spiritual one. Second part: Your faith was strong but you needed proof You saw her bathing on the roof Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew you She tied you To a kitchen chair She broke your throne, and she cut your hair And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah In this part Cohen relates to the story of David and Bathsheba when David was walking on the roofs he saw her bathing and seduced her ending up committing adultery and lost a lot of influence and weakened his link with god (broken throne). Then we move to the story of Samson who gets his hair cut and loses all his powers, once again, a broken throne. In this verse, the hallelujah is a very sad and desperate one. Third Part: Baby I have been here before I know this room, I've walked this floor I used to live alone before I knew you. I've seen your flag on the marble arch Love is not a victory march It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah In this part Cohen talks about the ambivalence of love and its effect on your faith. It can be glorious like a flag on a marble arch or it can be cold and broken. And when in heart break you may lose or strengthen your faith, in this case it is strengthened because he still praises the lord in the end. In this case, the hallelujah is (obviously) cold and broken. Fourth Part: There was a time you let me know What's really going on below But now you never show it to me, do you? And remember when I moved in you The holy dove was moving too And every breath we drew was Hallelujah This is an obvious reference to sexuality and that even through an act as disgraceful as sex you can still praise the lord. In this verse the hallelujah can be interpreted as an “orgasmic” one. Fifth Part: You say I took the name in vain I don't even know the name But if I did, well really, what's it to you? There's a blaze of light In every word It doesn't matter which you heard The holy or the broken Hallelujah This is a reference to one of the ten commandments and through this Cohen is trying to make the listener understand that religion and faith is not etched in stone and that every one should interpret the holy texts and religion in his own way and that there is no “Right Way” to believe. This is an uncertain hallelujah, meaning that he is not sure what to believe but he believes anyway. Sixth Part: I did my best, it wasn't much I couldn't feel, so I tried to touch I've told the truth, I didn't come to fool you And even though It all went wrong I'll stand before the Lord of Song With nothing on my tongue but Hallelujah In this part, he has found what to believe in and realizes his past errors but he is ready to face the lord because he now has complete faith. This hallelujah is one of total faith and love for “the lord”. Hallelujahs: The song revolves around the word Hallelujah, which is a Hebrew word which means praise Yah/Jah or the Lord. And through the song, he says that all Hallelujahs are of equal value no matter the circumstance or the cause of the act. Weather it is in complete blissful faith or is from broken desperation, all ways and goals to prise the lord mean the same and are all equal.
VideoGame Addict237 So many artists have recorded this song -- hundreds. There are many different versions. Personally, I like Rufus Wainwright's version the best. But, like most, he changes some of the lyrics.
He did. I think his version is probably the most well known and loved. It's beautiful. The only thing that bugs me is people credit him with writing it, which he didn't. But, that's just me :)
The original song by Leonard Cohen was about biblical stories (King David and Bathsheba. Samson and Delilah). But music being a form of art, the meaning of a song solely depends on the artist's interpretation. If Jeff Buckley's interpretation was that it's about "a couple having sex", then it's about "a couple having sex"

one night, i got up from my bed. it was late, everyone was bed. i came to my bedroom window, pulled back the curtain and poked my head out. it was cold and dark outside, the stars were twinkling light to my room above me. I then looked at them all for a solid minute until i took a deep breath and interally cried. i interally cried with joy because i was alive and nothing was more beautiful than the lives of people around me. remember, if you ever feel alone, the sun is lonely, but it still shines for us all.
This song is blasphemy. Wonder how many of you really listen to the lyrics and the untruth to this song. Very depressing Song, Hallelujah is something that is joyful from the Lord.
OK version. Lyrics don't "mean" anything specific except perhaps what you attribute to them! It is not deep and meaningful, stupid thing to cogitate over especially since the references are all over the place biblically.

Anyway; the simplicity of the sound and complexity of the meaning, it’s the most exquisite thing my ears have heard and if it isn’t at my funeral I will not be attending! 💜
Now, this is a comment well thought out and written by someone brought up reading the Bible stories, May God bless you, Amen
Jeff Buckley could have been 51 years old now, but he tragically died in 1997 at age 31 from drowning.

Ohhh-no, didn’t know that. Wow -he left us all such a remarkable song.

I almost drowned this past Sunday. This song came on the radio today and I remember how he passed. Why some of us are taken while others live? Maybe find out someday. Although not feeling great, I’m glad to be here today.

I've never heard a more beautiful version of this song. It's haunting and heartbreaking, and just sinks into your soul.
Sadly both Father and son died far too young. Both talented songwriters
This
OnceAndFuture King you are amazing. That’s what I think too! God bless you

There is no religion in this song. Its faith in whatever you want.
love is not a victory march....it's a cold and broken hallelujah.. so...so true!!!!!

Such a beautiful song. Third time on repeat, love hearing all the emotional notes.
I learned this on guitar! I love this song. I want this song when i die.
I reckon just don't die.

+Rin Lover 2015 we always have to mention the f word dont we
Imran Haider It's a word, I used it. I'd say passive aggressiveness is just as bad if not worse than a simple word.
+Rin Lover 2015 i would, however disagree :)
Imran Haider There isn't really much to disagree or agree on here. Foul emotions towards a person being worse than a word not being used towards a person, pretty much a solid fact if you have a good moral standing.
+Rin Lover 2015 well if you love fucking then it's a whole new thing
one of my favirote songs, and Jeff Buckley has a amazing voice!
At school yesterday my class had to understand what this song means line by line. What a way to start winter break lol

I’m actually kind of curious on what your class said the meaning of this song is. It honestly sounds kind of fun to analyze a song that deeply.

Riront-ils quand ils verront passer

Does no one listening to this understand that it's an ironic interpretation of David's where he does what he wants "in the name of god"
This is not about a couple having sex. This is explaining the biblical account of king David.
VideoGame Addict237 Here is the best interpretation of the song I've read. Leonard Cohen, reportedly, wrote 80 verses of Hallelujah before recording it.
Interpreted by : Francis O'Brien
**Many times Cohen says hallelujah in many different contexts; this is the core of the song and will be explained at the end of the analysis.
For the first part:
Now I've heard there was a secret chord
That David played, and it pleased the Lord
But you don't really care for music, do you?
It goes like this
The fourth, the fifth
The minor fall, the major lift
The baffled king composing Hallelujah
This relates to the story of King David who was had an intimate relation with god and was also a great harp player (secret cord/pleased the lord). The hallelujah at the end of this verse is a happy and spiritual one.
Second part:
Your faith was strong but you needed proof
You saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew you
She tied you
To a kitchen chair
She broke your throne, and she cut your hair
And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah
In this part Cohen relates to the story of David and Bathsheba when David was walking on the roofs he saw her bathing and seduced her ending up committing adultery and lost a lot of influence and weakened his link with god (broken throne). Then we move to the story of Samson who gets his hair cut and loses all his powers, once again, a broken throne. In this verse, the hallelujah is a very sad and desperate one.
Third Part:
Baby I have been here before
I know this room, I've walked this floor
I used to live alone before I knew you.
I've seen your flag on the marble arch
Love is not a victory march
It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah
In this part Cohen talks about the ambivalence of love and its effect on your faith. It can be glorious like a flag on a marble arch or it can be cold and broken. And when in heart break you may lose or strengthen your faith, in this case it is strengthened because he still praises the lord in the end. In this case, the hallelujah is (obviously) cold and broken.
Fourth Part:
There was a time you let me know
What's really going on below
But now you never show it to me, do you?
And remember when I moved in you
The holy dove was moving too
And every breath we drew was Hallelujah
This is an obvious reference to sexuality and that even through an act as disgraceful as sex you can still praise the lord. In this verse the hallelujah can be interpreted as an “orgasmic” one.
Fifth Part:
You say I took the name in vain
I don't even know the name
But if I did, well really, what's it to you?
There's a blaze of light
In every word
It doesn't matter which you heard
The holy or the broken Hallelujah
This is a reference to one of the ten commandments and through this Cohen is trying to make the listener understand that religion and faith is not etched in stone and that every one should interpret the holy texts and religion in his own way and that there is no “Right Way” to believe. This is an uncertain hallelujah, meaning that he is not sure what to believe but he believes anyway.
Sixth Part:
I did my best, it wasn't much
I couldn't feel, so I tried to touch
I've told the truth, I didn't come to fool you
And even though
It all went wrong
I'll stand before the Lord of Song
With nothing on my tongue but Hallelujah
In this part, he has found what to believe in and realizes his past errors but he is ready to face the lord because he now has complete faith. This hallelujah is one of total faith and love for “the lord”.
Hallelujahs:
The song revolves around the word Hallelujah, which is a Hebrew word which means praise Yah/Jah or the Lord.
Eric Kim i think it means something different to everyone
The original song by Leonard Cohen was about biblical stories (King David and Bathsheba. Samson and Delilah). But music being a form of art, the meaning of a song solely depends on the artist's interpretation. If Jeff Buckley's interpretation was that it's about "a couple having sex", then it's about "a couple having sex"
Rip this is one of the greatest songs of all time

Who else is here after watching shrek 1 million and twenty-five times and finally decided to check the song out
R.I.P Jeff Buckley
one night, i got up from my bed. it was late, everyone was bed. i came to my bedroom window, pulled back the curtain and poked my head out. it was cold and dark outside, the stars were twinkling light to my room above me. I then looked at them all for a solid minute until i took a deep breath and interally cried. i interally cried with joy because i was alive and nothing was more beautiful than the lives of people around me. remember, if you ever feel alone, the sun is lonely, but it still shines for us all.

Lyrics don't "mean" anything specific except perhaps what you attribute to them!
It is not deep and meaningful, stupid thing to cogitate over especially since the references are all over the place biblically.
