  • Come along with us as we visit giant ice caves, hike near glaciers, swim and play in Hallstättersee, and have an incredible time in Austria's Salzkammergut region in the Dachstein mountain range! Austria's Alps are sometimes underrated - many think of Switzerland when they think of the Alps, and they are magnificent there as well. But it is more affordable to vacation in Austria, and you still get nearly the same experience as in the Swiss Alps. We LOVE this region of the world and aren't done exploring it just yet!
//In the first video in this series, we visited Hallstatt!//
The tiny village of Hallstatt, Austria, is known as the most "Instagrammable" town in the world. A town that was the inspiration for Arrendale in Disney's, Frozen movie. A town so beautiful a replica of it was built in China. A town where tens of thousands of tourists flock for just a few hours each day to take some photos for Instagram 😳. But do they know WHY this small village of only 725 people is so important? Do they know it has 7,000 years of history and was important all through Europe? On this trip, our family set out to have a fun mountain vacation and learn about Hallstatt while avoiding the cheap tourist traps.

The interesting thing is that there are actually 2 large caves at the Dachstein - the Rieseneishöhle and the Mammuthöhle - right next to each other, but they are completely different. Mammuthöhle is a "normal" stone cave, whereas Rieseneishöhle is an ice cave with permanent ice all year round. This is because of its special shape which traps cold air during the winter.
The ice cave is comparatively 'small' (known length is currently 2700m), but the Mammuthöhle is one of the largest caves in the Alps (over 70km are explored so far; the known vertical extend is ~1200m). It is assumed that both are actually part of a much larger system, and also connected to caves on the other side of the mountain range. If this is found to be true they would be among the the 10 largest cave systems in the world.

Wow!! So amazing, thanks for sharing that. We wanted to visit the Mammoth cave but we didn’t have enough time or energy. Now that you tell us more about it, I wish we would have.

And it's amazing how quickly children pick up languages, it is actually a big advantage and a privilege having the chance to learn different languages as a kid. It's so much easier than learning them as an adult. The boy pronounced Koppenbrüllerhöhle exactly like a Bavarian or Austrian would do.

Hey Sara, two videos in one week? What did we do to deseve this special treat? 😉
Bowling in the american sense can be found often as well in Germany. For Kegeln, you can play in a variety of modes, so depending on what is set it can be quite similar to bowling (except for it having a different number of pins and no finger holes in the ball), or quite different. 😆 And yes, in most larger venues you also have to rent shoes (or have some of your own), so the floor is kept clean and smooth.

    • @MyMerryMessyGermanLife

Hi liege Christian!! Okay good to know. Next time we won’t look like complete fools 😂 but the family playing next to us had kids and it was a big mess for them, too! And they were German.

@@MyMerryMessyGermanLife I've been bowling (or Kegeln) with kids several times, and it's always an interesting experience. 😆 The balls go everywhere... 😆One bowling place here in Trier has edges they can move up, so the balls stay on track and always hit the pins.
PS: "liege"? 🤔How did I earn that title? 😉

Skittles (Kegel) is considered to be one of the oldest sports of all. For example, a game of skittles for children from ancient Egypt was found during excavations. Preliminary forms of our present-day game can be found in the early Middle Ages. Kegeln is described in documents from that time as a widespread popular pastime. Even later, kegeln finds famous followers such as Schiller or Goethe. During their lifetime, kegeln was not to be missed at any fair. The game was often played for money or material goods. Emigrants and adventurers eventually took the popular game to all corners of the world, including the United States. There it was banned in 1837 because cheating was too common in kegeln. But this shows the inventiveness of the emigrants, who did not want to give up the game. Without further ado, they added a cone, so now they played with ten cones instead of nine, and set them up in a triangle instead of a square. In addition, from now on the cones were called pins. The "new" game was henceforth called bowling and also spread rapidly throughout the world. Today it is even more popular than the original kegeln, although the rules are very similar, and the tradition of kegeln is much older than the history of bowling.

Spectacular, memorable views - as always. Besides, you have noticed the differences between "Kegeln" and "Bowling". Slightly different rules, 9 - instead of 10 pins, smaller, lighter balls, mostly without holes. If the stories can be believed "Bowling" was some kind of reinvention of the "Kegeln" game in the US. "Kegeln" got banned in Conneticut because many players were bowling for money and cheating was common, the idea was born to change the game to get around the ban.

I saw my first glacier last year, up close, with water pooling right in front of it and I think this is an experience I will never forget. I am not sure if I have every seen something more beautiful. This huge amount of cold hard ice that is so strong it is carving out the mountain, yet on the other hand it is so delicate and vulnerable that I might experience some of the glaciers vanishing completely within my lifetime. It actually made me want to protect our planet and our environment even more.

I also found the musical accompaniment during the cave tour funny. bach and richard strauss music. what I also liked is that you took your own food with you. not only that you save money, but so you also make yourself more independent of the tourist places. what great views there on the roof of Europe . but what I also don't understand, how can you jump and swim so easily in cold beer lakes? all insane😂

Hi guys! Austria is really great isn't it? I have another tip for you, probably not far from you, just across the border in Austria (I believe it's Reutte), is a place called Burgenwelt Ehrenberg. We went there in the winter and it was fun, close to skiing spots by car - of course summer might be even better as there are playgrounds there too. There's a castle and a highline bridge, and there is a museum of Knights. The kids can try to hold weapons and wear armor. There's a hotel there and a nice restaurant too. I think if you stay at the hotel you get a pass for free admission to the town's indoor pool and other sites/activities.

Kegeln, where almost every restaurant even in small villages had at least one or two „Kegelbahnen“ down in the basement or even directly at the side of the restaurant’s room where people sit and eat or celebrate their wedding/anniversary/birthday. But I don‘t know how much of them today are still operating.
But today you can find at least one bowling alley in almost every larger city.
So while „Kegeln“ was a sport that my parents did in their spare time and where there were many sport clubs were you could do competitive „Kegelsport“, now there aren‘t so much „Kegelklubs“ anymore. Those amateur hobby „Kegler“ and „Keglerinnen“ once were famous for their „Kegelklubtreffen“ at hotels and resorts where they were partying.
Those „Kegelklubtreffen“ often were a big part of the income of those hotels and some hotels became famous for hosting those events like i.e. the „Sauerlandstern“ in Willingen/Hessen. Those „Kegelklubtreffen“ were the boomer generation equivalent to modern day Mallorca/Ballermann- or Après-Ski-Parties. 😉

If you like really GOOD wine ,try some of the awesome reds from Burgenland, like Scheiblhofer, Umathum,Pöckl,Schwarz or even the cheaper Hillinger wines you can buy at Hofer (Austrian Aldi). They will all give you a better impression of great wine from Burgenland, and after that you can try Uhudler just for fun.

Informative and entertaining and really professionally edited very big compliment !!!
For someone interested in history is a great pleasure to watch it. Have a wonderful vacation with our neighbors, with whom we are not only connected by language.
If it's not too scary for the kids, I still recommend the World Heritage Ossuary (Bone House) in St. Michael's Chapel.

Stunning, stunning, stunning. I mean, who needs Netflix when we've got you, right? Consider yourselves über-lucky to be located where you are, at the nexus of Europe's wonders. Smart move. Everything's within reach. As a German expat stuck on the British Isles it is a reminder of how, despite all the difficulties, the European idea does pay off in the end. You really have a sizeable part of the world at your fingertips. Just think, if you wanted, you could bike from Traunstein to China. Overland! Crazy. So, keep 'em coming, with your amazing kids blasting the way! Lots of love from London

Wow, Graysons pronunciation was very good. No wonder the children are now better in German (Even Ella), they are immersed and learn German not only in German classes but since all their other subjects are taught in German (and their classmates use it to communicate with them) they have a huge advantage over you both. We have both Bowling and "Kegeln" here, aside from the difference in the amount and placement of the pins, the holes and weight of the balls there is a reason why the need for special footwear differs, because the area you start on to release the ball in Bowling is usually the same (wood) as the lane they roll, while most of the time playing "Kegeln" the floor is mostly the normal floor (often carpet) of the rest of the area. Bowling shoes are intended for the protection of the wooden lane (not only from destruction but also from dirt or discoloration). I prefer Bowling because you have more controll over the ball because of the 3 holes (tbh, so far I have never seen any holes in the ball "Kegeln" but the last time I played it was over 30 years ago). I love how many different you things during your vacation, I love your channel and noticing you comment in videos of other Americans currently livng in Germany (and vacationing not far from it) like recently a video from Hayley Alexis.

You do nothing more than remind me of my own childhood when my parents took me (and my sisters) to all of these places you feature in your vid. I think I was 5,when we visited the ice cave and the Salzbergwerk. Just a couple of years ago I took my wife and son to those places.
Being an Austrian myself I highly recommend visiting the Großglockner Hochalpenstraße, the Krimmler Wasserfälle, the Umball Falls in Osttirol, Innsbruck with the Hungerburgbahn und Cablecar up to Hafelekar and on the way back you can visit the Alpen zoo. If ever you come to Lower Austria you should take a ship from Krems to Melk and then visit the Burgruine Aggstein.

There are many different games that you can play on a "Kegelbahn", normally using pencil and paper or an even more old-fashioned blackboard.
Maybe try to get in touch with a local "Kegelclub", when you're back home.
I'm sure, there are some in your area and that they'd be delighted to introduce you to the world of "Pudelkönige", "Sarg kegeln", and "Tannenbaum kegeln". 😀
And you never know - you might get friends with some of them. 😉
