That riff at :52 is sick! when you sit down to write something or just screw around on the guitar always record it , even if it sounds like poop, save it and listen to it again the next day and it'll recreate new ideas and turn into something awesome.

also thanks for a tab book, so cool to see what's really happening there!

Hi Andrea. I share your love for heavy guitar. I played until I was 21 then could no longer play due to a physical injury (R/Arm paralysis) 40 years ago. However, I still play guitar in my head, which is something you develop over time. Luckily, I have a friend who is a phenomenal guitar player, and I'm able to show him what to play both visually by holding one of his guitars, using my left arm/hand to tap notes and chords, while vocally singing/saying the notes, chords and/or riffs/hooks. He (my friend) keeps playing along until he gets it down. I'm so eternally grateful I can still create guitar based music with the help of others. IMO, there's nothing quite like the pleasure and satisfaction of coming up with a riff, hook and/or song you created in your head, then hearing played out real-time, then painting on the canvas with drums, bass, effects and vocals (I can sing a little). I will never forget listening to Michael Schenker at an interview, where he said (paraphrasing), "People ask, "how much do you practice?" But, I don't call it "practice," I call it "Play," because that's what it is...I'm just playing guitar because I enjoy it. It's like going on a treasure hunt, where you'll find treasures of riffs, hooks and grooves here and there, then put them away in the "treasure chest" to pull out later to build on."

It can be difficult with vocals - the timbre of the voice may not always match the music. A song is a mood, and the lyrics often become a stream of thoughts in that mood. And here remains a pure mood and it seems to be heavily charged. Many years ago, the soundtrack from "Quake 2" often played in the CD-player, it gave great emotions. It seems that I still found a worthy addition and continuation of that mood. Thank you so much for your creativity, keep up the good work.

Quake 2 soundtrack actually gave me inspiration to write my own stuff. Check out Marcin Buszewicz - Close Encounter. This is song on my second account. Its inspired quite heavily by Quad Machine from the soundtrack.

You got me with admitting to writers block and that 'riff salad' concept. The struggles of songwriters (aka producers in my world) are real and universal.
The music is good as far as I can tell, good groves, only moderately indulgent for someone who is good enough to be tempted show off constantly hehe. Gonna listen to it. Cheers!

If you've got writer's block, return to a proven formula. Start with a chord progression, derive a melody from it, arpeggiate that melody, harmonize that melody, find your riffs. Or, start with a melody or riff, build a chord progression from those notes, arpeggiate the chords, find riffs within. You can work it from any direction.
It all goes together so neatly when you fully understand it all. I do, from an academic standpoint, but I have tons of difficulty actually playing it because my practice habits suck. YOU don't have that problem.
You could take any chunk of that composition and build the melody, harmony, chords, and riffs of of it.

I can't write a riff out of thin air. I need to think of a scenario or a place or a atmosphere.
Then the riff comes almost automatically. Also at a end of a riff, I can sometimes hear what should come next.
Sometimes of course it's riff I heard many years ago that is stuck in the back of my mind.

Despite Andrea's cynical/satirical viewpoint on this video, I think this is a great and inspiring instrumental work that has all the riffs and measures as templates to build new songs out of.
I listened to the track here, and 'Something's wrong with my pc' a few times, and I think within each segments, you can definitely add some measures with a verse and a chorus to flesh these ideas further.
Something's wrong with my computer especially already has the structure complete (it is currently like a bell-shaped structure where parts 1 to 6 plays (solo), and goes back to 1, super sick). It can be like Enter Sandman if you were to turn it into a song. Also a segment before climax can come in with chord progression of vi-vii-vi-vii can play (C lydian and D mixolyd).

    Dear Colleague.
I do simply the same. And never mind at all. Well some parts taken and then more to it as chorus verse and what all. The damn spirits flow and the fingers do the work themselves. I seen once the golden shiver after playing 8 hours long. So what? I didn't get any electro shock.
And erm I also have the philosophy as never able to earn big money by own music the production shall be as one take only. I did them cuts and then setting each part one after another. But then more fun as basic song guitar line has repetitions but the second most time not near. Or then at some parts.
Depens drums programmed before and how or when the 2n line recorded.
So Riff Salad and now Annihilator Word salad. He Jeff Waters has that same kind anyway as he plays basic riffs with or in so many variations . Say there a little pause or then stakkati elswise played.
I Wish You more of that. As damn good stuf.
