Pinky sleeping on her back is a sign she's comfortable! They only do that when they feel 100% safe because there bellys are a vulnerable area for them.

a rule we had when we first got our dog was that when she went back to her bed we all left her alone as she knew that that was her own space. it really helped her discover boundaries. she would then come out and come to us or lay on the floor when she wanted attention. this really helps her settle in as she was from a rescue xxx

I know this is a tough one especially since everyone is in lock down. However, watching your vlog. You said, she gets startled, nervous those type of things around noises, or people. Do the best you can to try and socialize her. So that she isn’t scared of everything lol I uhm may have created my own issue with that one 🤫

Definitely! Also I think teaching her how to be alone is important too, but I mean she won't be alone a lot I think even without the lock down and the virus so yeah! But just so she can be alone for the times they go out for couple of hours or go to the grocery store or something like that!
Yeah, the lock down makes it hard to socialize and do the training for being alone:/

One of the best tips that I've seen is just going to a park or a shop, and sitting with your pup. Not playing, not interacting with people, just practicing being calm and happy while people walk past. My dog was very anxious when she came home to us, and that was one of the things we worked on a lot. She still doesn't love other dogs on walks (leash reactivity) but likes chilling out and watching the world go by...and obviously getting pats :P

This is great advice! However for a rescue dog coming from abroad the general advice is to keep them in the house and garden for a minimum of 1-2 weeks to let them decompress before you start taking them out and socialising. :)

    • @214luvbugs
      @214luvbugs 4 года назад +1

I noticed that as well. Vet advice we got (and of course will be a little difficult in lockdown) was to carry little training treats with you. When you meet someone give them a treat to give to Pinky. My dog Squidgy thinks everyone is awesome now and even runs and jumps into the UPS truck because the driver has treats too. It’s the cutest thing. Of course the fact the Squidgy recognizes the UPS truck sound before it even gets here may indicate I have an online shopping problem lol

    • @rbbbbb9540

@@nicolemallaby4544 totally agree. Please don't force loads of different people and noises on a nervous Romanian rescue dog that has just arrived! I have had mine for 3 months and it has taken until now for her not to be on edge all of the time. It just takes time. How ever, when introducing people, do not let them go up to the dog and try to touch it, keep speaking to it, try to entice it towards you.. the dog should be ignored and have the choice to come up to the visitor if it feels comfortable. The best thing to do with my dog is for strangers & visitors to completely ignore her as though she isn't there. My dog seems to have had a harder start than pinky so i have had to take a lot of time and she is slowly getting better. Hopefully pinky won't have as many issues with strangers etc as she seems to have taken to you both already

That’s really important advice to give, especially if the collar isn’t a break away collar. • @ramonaholloway4726
    @ramonaholloway4726 4 года назад +45

    She’s absolutely stunning!!
The treats are great but best thing instead of dentasticks for her teeth are carrots. Just put a bag in the fridge then give her one one instead of dentasticks etc. The carrots are great for teeth cleaning, the cold helps soothe their teeth too if irritated when teething and also is a great source of fibre which helps them with toileting as they can be quite constipated at first from previous diet, Diet changes and the lengthy travels on the transport vans.
Pets at home sell these tyre type toys too which are similar to the kongs so durable and good for them to chew on.
The crate is a great ideas as many dogs see them as safety places. However just be a bit wary of the blankets on top. Because she’s chewing she may try to chew the blanket and the thread can become loose and sadly some dogs have got the thread tangled around their necks or made a hole and the dog has gotten stuck or been strangled as a result. I know that’s awful to hear but could avoid disaster so thought I’d mention it. The best thing is to buy crate covers from Amazon.
I also let my dogs on sofa however make sure she knows her basic training first so sit, wait etc because this puts boundaries in place and creates a bond where she will listen to you. Some dogs mainly rescues will try to claim areas etc so she could try to claim the sofa or just refuse to get down if you tell her down so I’d put those training in place and teach her to ask to come up first and to get down when told. Also teaching her to go to bed and wait is a great command especially when visitors come over. When you do get visitors I’d get a safety gate or something so that you can do introductions Safely as sometimes they may think visitors are a threat.
There’s lots of advice I could give but would become an essay so let me know if you ever have any questions as I have lots of experience with Romanian rescues and rescue dogs in general 😊

    • @ChocolateYmke
      @ChocolateYmke 4 года назад +4

Uncooked veggies can be hard to digest for some dogs, so keep that in mind ☺️ If I give mine even a small piece of raw carrot, you can literally see pieces of carrot come back out in his poop. He looooves veggies, so we will just cook or steam them, and give them afterwards ☺️

    • @ramonaholloway4726
      @ramonaholloway4726 4 года назад +1

@@ChocolateYmke That’s good advice! Absolutely each dog varies and I should have mentioned that.
Usually carrots are fine and them being cold does help with teething but absolutely if not chewed properly may come out in their poo. It’s important to mention that size of the veg makes a difference
So if a small dog then use a small piece of carrot or half a carrot. If bigger they can have a bigger size and so on. Something I forgot to mention
It’s always good to keep an eye when introducing any food to dogs so thank you for pointing that out 🙂

dog walker here! we love our halti harnesses that attach to the lead at the front instead of the normal ones that clip at the back, instead of the dog being pulled upwards/backwards by the harness when they pull it just makes them turn around, it depends on the dog whether it makes a huge difference or not but it just means for our more difficult dogs they get bored of pulling super quickly and the harness doesn't dig in to their skin too much when they do pull!

A good tip we got with our pup was to touch her paws and brush her pretty much as soon as we got her to get her used to grooming and getting her nails cuts as the earlier they experience it the more comfortable they are, and also to take her walking to dog parks to get her used to other dogs and if any family or friend have dogs do little visits so she can socialise and learn to trust other dogs as friends

Hey soph! Firm staples in our house for the dogs are:
Bags of carrots in the fridge. Chopped up they work really well for training or whole they’re really good for cleaning their teeth.
Mine really enjoy apples, either sliced or whole but with the core taken out as they can’t have the seeds.
    Bananas are loved.
There’s so many veggies they can have and enjoy too! Celeriac is a firm favourite with our two as its low in calories and high in vitamins.
For actual treats, I try to keep it a bit more natural and mine mainly get non-processed as in not bleached buffalo ears from a natural foods supplier. Or mine love things like sprats which you can get from pets at home.
Mine are teddy obsessed. One of their teddies is over seven years old, it’s from the teddy bear factory and poppy has had it since I rescued her seven years ago. It’s belly even still smells like strawberries. Some of their absolute favourites are the tiny football teddies from IKEA. They also love the snow buddies collection on Amazon. Each teddy comes in different sizes so the medium size would be ideal for Pinky. They are really good quality and wash well. Actually that’s another thing, if she has a habit of leaving toys in the garden, make sure you wash them regularly. Not just for bacteria etc but slugs can cause lung worm in dogs and if your toys are left out with slugs sliding all over them it poses a risk so just throw them in the wash, I do mine about once a week and you’ll be good!
With kongs, they’re super amazing. There’s some top tips for filling them with yogurt, berries and natural fillings and freezing them which make them last a lot longer when you give it to her. An important thing to remember with the Kong is that the licking can cause a suction motion so it’s important to make sure there is always a hole through the toy so like when you fill it up, just use a skewer to poke an air hole through and it’ll stop the suction motion from happening!
I got these super cute wooden toy baskets on Amazon for like £15 for three to put round the house.
    X
Edit: also crate training is actually super important. I don’t use one with mine, they’re comfortable around the house together and don’t need it but they are both crate trained. It comes in handy for putting them in the kennels when we go away and also should they ever need to stay at the vets for any kind of procedure, they will find it more relaxing if they are already crate trained!
    X
Also, I keep mine away from sticks when outside and encourage either a fake rubber stick or a ball. We had an incident that really opened my eyes when I was younger with a dog chewing on a stick and he started choking and being sick. After being rushed to the vets it was a bit of the bark from the stick he had chewed off had become lodged in the ridges on the top of his mouth. Because of the colour we couldn’t see it but the vet found it under their lights and advised it was a common issue so I’ve banned sticks ever since!
    X

Although most harnesses come with reflectors, it’s in my opinion a great additional safety measure for your pup during the darker times of the year and something that we didn’t come to think of right away either. Hi soph! Really liked this video😍 some things that helped us when we were training our pups
    1) pop the kong with peanut butter in the freezer for 15 minutes before you let her play with it, it makes it harder and takes them longer to finish it!
    2) use high reward treats like cheese and cooked chicken when training, it’s a lot more interesting for them than normal biscuits and they are more likely to respond!
    3) we give our dogs carrots instead of denta stix because we find they can be too salty for our dogs - our previous dog had kidney failure so we try to limit salt in their diet! We just peel a small carrot for them and they have one each day as a treat, they love it so much!!!
    4) if you want to get some tennis balls for her to play with, buy used ones on eBay that tennis courts no longer need! They are cheaper and have so much more bounce in them than the ones you can buy from the pet store!
Let me know if you try any of these 🥰

We just got a little puppy at the beginning of the first lockdown, some stuff I would recommend you getting is puppy shampoo and conditioner (they need to be for puppies cause their skin is still a bit sensitive when they are young, and conditioner is important since she has hair-like fur), a brush is highly important as well otherwise her hair will get all knotty! Also you should get her used to brushing her teeth while she’s still young :) some advice that helped us was, don’t allow her to do anything that you probably won’t when she’s older, no matter how cute she is! If you allow her to do ‘naughty’ things as a puppy, it super difficult to grow out of those habits !
She is super adorable and looks like a little angel ❤️

She’s soooo perfect and so sweet🥺🥺, I have always been told that dogs will like toys more and react better with toys going from your reaction, so the more excited about if you are the more they enjoy it, I would definitely recommend a water bottle or a water bowl that folds down for walks and stuff or car rides they are absolutely amazing and so useful to have, you guys are absolutely amazing she 100% has found the right home with you and she seems to settled already, I can’t wait for more vidoes 🥺💕

Lovely 🥰 one word of caution, try to supervise when she has the rope toys, they’re super common but unfortunately they’re in the top 3 items that vets find in intestinal blockages. The strands are easily swallowed and cause havoc wrapping up in/round their disservice system. A chunk of rubber does much less damage if swallowed

I’d recommend taking her collar off in the house - seen too many accidents with getting stuck on crates etc. Snuffle mats are great for keeping them occupied and antlers/buffalo horns are also really good for something to chew on! She’s a lovely looking pup ☺️

Dogs shouldn’t be chewing on sticks tho, cuz they could get splinters in their gums/mouth and need to visit the vet. Of course they can play with them but should never chew on sticks. It can be really dangerous

Aww she's so cute! Both my dogs are crate trained and they seem to like it, they will go straight in there when we say its bedtime or "in your beds" and it gives me peace of mind that they are safe and can't get up to mischief! For chew treat things, I would definitely recommend Yakers and antlers, they last a long time and my two love them :) Not sure what age they can have them from though. One of my dogs loves to chew toys so I've had to find some that stand up to his chewing 🙈 the Kong rugby ball shaped Jumbler and JW Hol-ee roller are two of his favourites and have stood the test of time. I hope this is helpful, your puppy looks like she's going to have the best life and knowing how much it meant to me when I got my dogs its so nice to see how excited you are, I can't imagine life without my dogs now ❤

I highly recommend chuckit ultra ball. This is the most loved ball by our dog. He is obsessed with it. Also it is very durable. He's chewing it all of the time and nothing is happening. It's very jumpy and floats on water. We have a dachshund and size M is perfect. Second favourite ball is chuckit erratic ball. The ball has angular edges and bounces in an unpredictable direction. Nothing else could compare to them.

I have a cavapoo who is now 9 months old. I would advise:
    - Pet head oatmeal shampoo (good for their skin)
    - JR Pets pate (it's like ham texture and VERY HIGH VALUE treat. Perfect for training difficult things like getting her to enjoy the bath)
    - 100% natural antler chews (healthy, long lasting, great for their teeth)
    - Butternut subscription. I like that this is fresh human grade ingredients. Much better than feeding your dog kibble where you dont really know what's in it.
    - DONT buy treats and food that say made or flavoured "WITH chicken/duck/etc." Because if you look at fine print on the back you'll see that key word being "WITH" means they only use about 4% of that meat ingredient and the rest is wheat or unhealthy crap you dont want your dog eating.
    - if she eats her food particularly fast then slow/fun feeder bowls are great for slowing her down.
    - when she is sleeping desensitization with touch and sound. Touch all her sensitive areas like her ears and between her paws to prepare for nail clipping. Talk as loud as you normally do, play the TV loudly, play firework sounds, etc.
    - Make sure you give her some hours alone and continuously go in and out the room or house, so she doesn't develop separation anxiety or associate certain things you do with leaving the house.

We crate trained my dog, but he LOVES his crate. My dog is very nervous, so we treat it as his special space, filled with all his fave blankets and he sits in it out of choice, I think crate training is great for making a dog feel comfortable and as though they have their own space.

We give our dog all the cardboard from food packaging or any cardboard box that we have - it’s free entertainment for them and bonus you don’t have to rip the boxes apart to fit in the recycling bin especially the strong boxes his food comes in but you do have to go round picking up all the bits and put it in the bin but it’s easier than ripping it all apart yourself! However I would only encourage this for dogs that don’t like to destroy household items or this would encourage it more. My dog knows what he can and can’t rip apart and he gets so excited when we let him do it! And also Pinky is so adorable she’s like a cute little fox 🦊 💖

Hi Soph, I hope you see this, congrats on getting your puppy! What a happy time! The stuff you have purchased for your pup is great, I just wanted to pop you some suggestions. Once she is grown, I would recommend getting a perfect fit harness (by dog games shop) - the shape of the harness is designed to fit comfortably and has two connection points to help with pulling and balance - these are fully tailorable to your dog, fit with clips so not scary things going over her head and are best used with the halti training lead you have already got. A big bonus is that the top piece of the harness comes in several colours and there are two shades of purple to choose from. I am a fully qualified dog trainer myself in positive reinforcement methods and Zak George, Kikopup and Susan Garrett from DogsThat! are trainers i definitely reccomend following. To find local trainers, I would recommend searching for an APDT accredited trainer to ensure their code of conduct is safe for both you and your gorgeous pup. Enjoy this wonderful time! I love you channel :)

We are 6 months into puppy life so here are so tips - Highly recommend Yakker (get a medium so they can hold on to it and once it gets too small stick it in the microwave and it turns into like a honeycomb that the dog can then safely eat) and Antler for chewing - also put her feed with water in the kong and freeze it - top it with cream cheese or peanut butter. I also make banana/blueberry/yogurt cubes - great for teething and putting in the kong. We were told to avoid baker and pedigree products - we did have a incident when we gave our puppy baker treats and she was super sick so we are so careful with what we give her now. Highly recommend liver cake for training - our pup will do anything for liver cake! We bought all these things for our pup and she only plays now with tennis balls and plastic frisbees - has no interest in rope or soft toys lol theres also a facebook group beyond the bowl which is great for mental games. We have a working cocker spaniel and all her meals are given by scatter feed/kong/snuffle mat/puzzle games as she needs lots of mental stimulation as well as off lead runs. Also teething wise - frozen carrots are brilliant and cheap!

I commented on your last vlog but you may not of seen it. For dog food I recommend checking out tail.com, you fill out a questionnaire about your dog, breed, age, weight and health etc.. and they tailor a recipe specifically for you dog. You can choose what you want the food to aid with like putting on weight, loosing weight, maintain a healthy coat, digestive issues and joint problems.. you can also choose if you want it to not include a ingredient like our dogs can’t have grains so we opted to take that out. Then they tell you exactly how many grams you’re dog needs a day like 256g for example and send you a food scoop with your order too with a marker where you fill it up too for the right amount, they send you the amount you’ll need for the month so you don’t have to worry about needing to go pick up more food. Our deliveries have never been late and since we switch our dogs have been so much better. You get like 50% off your first order and then it’s like £27 a month after that. I highly recommend, and your dog food comes with your dogs name on it with I think is so cute 😊

Sorry just thought of a few more things to recommend that we have for our dogs :)
A fun pet food bowl, our youngest dog would just wolf his food down in a matter of seconds and make a weird noise so concerned we bought these fun pet bowls that have like ridges in them and it helps to slow him down and it’s helped a lot!
Our oldest dog is so strong we have literally bought him toys from everywhere and he just demolishes them (even the black extreme kong toy) so we tried these balls called “Chuck it” I think and we’ve had them almost a year now and he actually gets bored of them cause he can’t pierce them and chew them up, they might be a bit big for your little pinky though, they are tennis ball size..
we were going to get a halti harness but read so many bad reviews so we got a “julius K9” harness and it is so good. However our dogs are black Labradors so are bigger and pull a lot stronger than pinky will :)
Doggy day care I recommend. So when we first got our dogs we lived on Anglesey and have a large garden so they never really need to be walked, plus it’s like just farms everywhere over there so no much human traffic, so when we moved back to Manchester and had to obviously walk our furries they were not used to other dogs at all (which was a nightmare when we saw another dog on a walk 🙄) so anyway we started to take them to doggy day care for a few hours a week so they were around other dogs, they got to socialise and play with other dogs in a safe environment and it’s done wonders and they LOVE going now and the centre sends us cute pictures of the dogs playing as well, it’s like a little dog school it’s great 😊
I love that you are crate training too, we crate trained and it’s so good for separation anxiety.. so if you and James both have to leave she won’t be distressed as she’ll be used to her own company.
Lint rollers you will need if you find your clothes cover on dog hairs too from all thee constant cuddles..
I’m so sorry my comment is so big!
I’m so glad you got a dog though, they are amazing animals who will love you more than anything else in the world 😊🐶❤️

My boyfriend and I have just bought a house and the first thing we did was get a puppy!
Our puppy is 4 months old, she’s a German Shepherd (fully bred).
We’ve found Kongs to be super helpful. Mostly when she’s home alone, we fill it up with all sorts of recipes.
    We’ve tried the following:
    - Squirty cheese and pieces of carrots
    - Baby food (make sure they are suitable though) we like Ellas kitchen
    - Penut butter (dog friendly of course) and treats.
It’s best to freeze the kongs if you want them to last longer, takes her hours to go through!
We’ve also left her kong overnight in her puppy food bag so it soaks up all the yummy smells - she loves this.
I’d highly recommend a licky mat you can get them at Pets at Home/Amazon. We lather it with baby food, peanut butter or cheese (again you can freeze them!)
I’d suggest having more than one Kong so you can rotate them and have them prepared. We have 4 (all size Large).
We got a puppy blanket from Amazon it was roughly £15 for an extra extra large fits perfectly over her crate to cover it!
Link: PAWZ Road Pet Dog Blanket Fluffy Fleece Fabric Soft and Cute Warm Dot Print Blanket Throw Washable for Cats and Dogs Blue XL:200 * 150cm www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07QL8C93H/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_fabt1_XpSTFbPZMKE6E?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
If she’s in a chewy mood we give her a Kong Tire (they’re super tough!). Also, she has natural meat chews like buffalo skin etc (sounds disgusting, but she loves it and it keeps her busy for hours!!).
Sometimes she likes soft things to mouth not chew, we have loads of soft toys for that.
To stop her chewing things we don’t want her too we use a spray (anti biting spray by Johnson’s) I found it in the range - absolute life saver!! Just spray it on a table, table legs, shoes etc and they won’t go near it. It’s just a biter taste it won’t harm them.
We did crate training, we think it made a world of a difference on our pup! We time how long she’s awake for. Our trainer told us puppy’s should be sleeping 18hours of the day and should only be awake an hour max - so once she’s had her hour we usually prompt her to go to bed and it’s made a huge difference on her behaviour. We found that she chews and is nippy more when she’s tired.
Also remember, for every month they are they should have 5 mins exercise eg 3 months = 15 mins (like for walks) especially if it’s a breed prone to bad hips etc. I don’t know whether you’ll have this issue though? ☺️
I’d highly recommend the VIP pets at home app, loads of offers!!
    I hope this helped you!

I’m an animal behaviourist so I thought I’d give u some tips:
I’d seriously recommend a nylabone for her chewing & try your best to only give one of the dental sticks a day cause they’re super fattening!
Also those little wainwright treats are good but if you use the misfit ones try and break them in half if possible (just because she’s so small) and try to look into some natural chicken or salmon treats to try and keep it fresh for her - pups love variety & it’s so much easier to work on training when you can figure out what her favourite treat and hierarchy of treats/toys are
Personally, I hate haltis cause it uses negative reinforcement and can be fairly uncomfortable for dogs so I’d maybe look into some alternatives - I use a harness & robust lead for my pups & use treats and teach heel.
Another thing to note - those rope toys are very fun for dogs but it’s so easy for them to pull out the string and get it either stuck in their teeth or I’ve even seen case studies where dogs have pulled so much out that it gets stuck in their stomach n even need surgery!
If you ever need any advice or other info pls lmk and I’d be happy to help 🤍
Ps. She’s adorable and I’m kinda in love with her

My little 3legged rescued Boston terrier, Squidgy, is an aggressive chewer and we went thru so many things till someone suggested antlers. I don’t know if they sell them in the pet stores in the UK but I believe they are on Amazon. There are all kinds(deer, elk, etc) and sizes. These are the only things that have proved to be Squidgy proof and he LOVES them. Added bonus is they get calcium from the antler as they chew on it and our vet said that they help keep their teeth clean. They also last a very long time. Don’t get anything bovine like cow hooves or Buffalo horns because they will splinter but antlers don’t do that.

She just seemed to chew through the ends and eat the little plastic bits 🤦‍♀️ would recommend any of the other kong toys and the extra sting range from pets at home ( I think it’s called rough and tougher) also if she’s keen on chewing get her a nylabone, they are super good for chewing, they last ages and it’s good and safe for there teeth. Hope this helps. Stay safe ❤️❤️

Hi Soph! I have two rescues and our youngest we rescued in January and she was 5 months so I feel I might be able to give you some useful tips! Number one - FREEZE YOUR KONGS! Once you’ve stuffed the kong freeze it, it will last her sooooo so much longer! With your Haiti, we had that harness and it’s ok but it slips about a bit. I’d say when she gets bigger it’s worth investing in a sturdier harness - we just bought both our dogs the BullyBillows harnesses and they’re anti pull too - worth every penny! For her teeth definitely don’t give any kind of dental stick they are FULL of sugar we just give both ours a raw carrot every day and their teeth and pearly white 😬 Also, with her chewing I would recommend buffalo horns or antlers they are much better for her to chew rather than those toys they will last her much longer. other than that enjoy her! It’ll be the best thing you’ll ever do 😘😘😘😘😘
