    Ugh, I totally agree with this. After lots of contemplation, I broke down and bought the 72 set and absolutely loved them, so as much as it hurt the bank account, I turned around an bought the 120 set. And that wooden box they came in? Its back in the box it came in and stored away with my pencils in a case. Just drop the box, put the 120 in a tin and they would sell no problem.

    • @TheArtGearGuide

      I totally agree Tim and I have been chatting with Derwent most of today so I will keep you all posted if there is anything at all that comes from this video and more importantly your comments. Derwent have absolutely seen the video, but they already know my view on the Derwent Artist being discontinued, but I think the comments from all of you guys will surprise them.

    • @jamesaritchie1

      Or keep them in the box and save yourself an immerse amount of trouble. Nothing is as unwieldy, as easy to dump, or as frustrating as a tin. A box can save hours of time over a long project. No, they would not sell in a tin with no problem. As much as you love them, they cost far too much for the lack of quality they have. Tin, box, or paper sack, anyone who wants high quality professional level pencil is not going to buy these pencils. They';; buy Caran d'Ache Luminance, Faber-Castell Polychromos, or Prismacolor Premier, and if they can afford it at all, they'll get these brands in a box because a box really does save immense time and frustration.
      These pencils are selling because very few who have enough money to buy a hundred and twenty of them will spend that money on something better, and putting them in a tin won't change this unless they lower the price drastically because no matter how low the price goes, they still are not professional level pencils.

      @@jamesaritchie1 …I just bought the 120 set…and compared to the other pencils not professional they do they are just slightly more than the Chromaflow at the mo on offer online…I agree as a pro you might not buy them but as colourist they are the better end of the lower end…if you get me…🤣🤣🥰

    • @TheArtGearGuide
      @TheArtGearGuide  2 года назад +6

      Not sure James how you drop Prismacolor in with professional pencil like the Caran d’Ache Luminance, Faber Castell Polychromos or Derwent Lightfast. Prismacolor claim to use the ASTM lightfast system and on that basis 85 of their pencils are LF 1 and 2 the rest can’t be used that’s 65 pencils not able to be used. The Derwent Artists are a little worse than Prismacolor with 50 LF1 or 2 pencils under the Blue Wool scale and 70 not able to use.
      As far as cost is concerned the Derwent tin sets are normally about 15-20% cheaper than their wooden box counter part and I am referring to Amazon U.K. prices. 72 ColourSoft Box set is £149 and tin is £119. A Wooden box of Derwent Artist on Amazon are between £160 and £189 so a tin could be sold for £130 - £140.
      For 132 set of Prismacolor on Amazon they are selling for £169 the 150 set is about £189. I know that both sets can be found cheaper elsewhere but for ease of example I am only using Amazon U.K. there is of course the fact that more people I am sure will prefer Prismacolor over the Artist given how hard the Artist are and not very pigmented, but I am just highlighting that whilst Prismacolor may be a much more popular pencil than the Artist, the is no place in time or the universe where Prismacolor should be placed beside the Luminance, Polychromos or Lightfast pencils. When it comes to the bottom line facts, not what the heart wants but the facts, neither the Artist or Prismacolor fall into the same category as the 3 aforementioned pencils.
      Hope you are keeping well and thank you so much for your comment

    I agree the wooden box is a problem. I got the 72 set, only because there were no way I was pawing out more than double the price to get the 120 set. Also, they are really really hard to find open stock to me.
    The lightfastness or rather the lack of it is another meh factor for me. If they had asked me what to do, I would have told them to ditch 20 of the 1-3 BW colours, and then make a 100 tin for them. I think they made a 100 tin for the Lightfast line already.
    The Artist line could do with a proper rewamp, not just a lazy one as they apparently went with. I don't think they did their marketing analysis very well. I don't think they asked themselves or anyone else why those colours does not sell.

  • @melsgalleria
    @melsgalleria 2 года назад +2

    You made some valid points, I also tend to look over wooden box sets. While they are usually really beautiful, they are also usually very pricey as well. So I don't tend to even look at them. I really think they should think about doing those options you suggested. Since if those colors are only available open stock or in a wooden box set, that is why they aren't selling as well. I know personally when I am buying open stock, I am usually just replacing colors I rarely get new colors. I have never even tried this line of pencils before so I would feel really blessed if I could get the chance to try them. I also want to say I really love what you do with supplies that you don't need or don't make it to a winner. That is actually a really awesome way to pass them forward.

    After I saw your video on this goegeous set a few weeks ago, I searched the internet high and low to still find this in stock somewhere. I was not willing to pay €499 on ebay. I finally was able to hunt one down at €240 on sale. I was tempted to get 2, as the 48 deleted colors are not available open stock anymore either, but only 1 set was in stock unfortunately.
    These pencils really surprised me. They are far more beautiful than I expected them to be. I adore the way they lay down on paper. Thank you for convincing me to finally buy this. Your idea of a metal tin with all 120 is really great and it baffles me that Derwent never thought of doing this, when the wooden box obviously kept man people from getting this set due to the higher price.
    I myself love the beautiful wooden box, but because our 1-room apartment has very limited work space for my drawing, I will have to move the pencils to a zippered pouch, so I don't have to fight with the large box on my tiny table, which really is a shame. But I do not regret that I got the box at all.
    PLEASE Derwent, bring the 48 colors back!!!!

      I would love to know what is going on at Derwent and who is the person calling the shots over there and I am going to guess that the person calling the shots is not a colored pencil artist.

      @@TheArtGearGuide Absolutely not! Neither seems that person to have any love for colours in general, otherwise he/she would not just go "cut throat" on 48 gorgeous colours.
      Another Derwent set that keeps me guessing is the 100 colours set of Inktense. On the Derwent website it does not appear anymore. Nor do the 28 new colours as a set. Did they already do away with it again?

    I agree! I was lucky enough to inherit my Nan's Derwent pastel pencils which were in a wooden box of 120. I tried to replace some of the colours which she had used a lot of - particularly the blues - and discovered that they now only do 72 colours - just like the artists pencils. 😢 This was quite a few years ago and I'm not aware that they've re-introduced any of the colours.

    Being 72 in the main I think has them on the back foot. Polychromos will always have the edge being available as a 120 set in tins. I would love to see the intense in the 120 set. They seem to lack key colours such as skin tones

    I was going to ask you if there was not the risk that now people would only buy Studio, instead of Artists. Then I went to see if the Studio were still on sale here in France. They are no longer for sale in my very big art supply store! Then I look at the Artists. I wanted to buy open stock some lightfast Artists colors that I love ! (Chartreuse, Taupe, Bistre, etc.) in the 48 in question (I have always buy Artists in open stock). These colours are no longer for sale either in this art supply store ! 😭 (Sorry for my english.)

    • @TheArtGearGuide
      @TheArtGearGuide  2 года назад +2

      Thing is the Studio and Artist colored pencils from Derwent are exactly the same ingredients, the reason why the Studio Colored pencil feels different is due to the Studio having quite a thinner core. But that is really interesting about what is being sold or not sod in your local art store. Your English is perfect thank you so much for your lovely comment.

    Lot of truth there. Surprised that they don’t have building sets. First 24 essential and then the next tin of 24 compliments it. I tried to work this out with polychromos and it was complicated. I plumped for 36 and a few open stock. Always honest and caring, keep it up. Thanks.

    Wow Harry what a lovely family you’ve got, so caring by donating arts supplies to the refuge centre. I do believe your kindness has touched so many of them, and have helped them going through such turbulent time in their lives. Arts has been my way to overcome all the life’s challenges thrown at me since I was a little girl too, with my parents constantly moving houses with their work, adapting to new schools etc. Paper and pencils and I’ll be off away to my own imaginary world where I could just be me and be happy. I have not tried these derwent artist pencils but I do get what you were saying about their decision in discontinuing many colours from a set that has been loved by so many people.

    Thanks for the info. I have the Procolor and Lightfast full sets. The Lightfast set of 100 were only available in the wooden box and while it's beautiful, I would have been happy with them in a box similar to the Caran Dache or even their standard tins for a lower cost.
    I like the idea of having the 48 additional colors in their own tin. If they have the access to the pigments I wonder if they've considered expanding the other lines (Procolor and Chromaflow) to include those colors.
    One of the appeals of the Prismacolor, Pablos, and Polychromos is that they have 150 and 120 colors. Some of us love convenience colors and don't always want to mix our own. I'd love to have an additional 48 colors in the Procolor, and another 30 Polychromos 😀. Thanks for another great video.
    Thank you also for the generous giveaway. I hope a young and budding artist wins. Best of luck everyone!

    You had the same idea I did! To hope that they’d sell the other 48 colors as a set of their own. It makes sense that they sold it in a wooden box though if it has to do with the weight of that many pencils causing a tin to bend. No one wants their pencils broken in the middle because they all fell on the floor. They must make these available! That’s too sad to think they could run out. The colors are truly beautiful.

    Totally agree, I was looking to buy the 120 set, but there was only the wooden box set available, and I have no need/or space for a big wooden box, and it makes them too expensive. Sad that they aren’t really thinking about how the consumer uses and buys pencils.
